'Humane' fishing net wins Dyson award

'Humane' fishing net wins Dyson award | Water affairs | Scoop.it
Dan Watson has devised a system based on a series of escape rings for fish, which can be fitted to a fisherman's trawler net...

A young British designer has won a prestigious international award for creating a "humane" net to make fishing more sustainable by preventing small fish from being trapped.

Dan Watson devised a system based on a series of escape rings for fish – which can be fitted to a fisherman's trawler net – in response to the problem of overfishing and the controversial and wasteful practice of throwing away healthy and edible fish or other creatures as so-called bycatch.

New EU fishing deal criticised

New EU fishing deal criticised | Water affairs | Scoop.it

EU ministers have reached a provisional deal to reshape the Common Fisheries Policy, long blamed for overfishing.

The deal has been hailed by the UK environment ministry Defra but criticised by the EU fisheries commissioner and environmentalists.

A Commission source told BBC News the new funding arrangements would continue to promote overfishing.

He said measures to support selective nets that avoided discards would be outweighed by funds for bigger engines.

The deal took away with one hand but gave with the other, the source said.

Saving the Southern Ocean: China, Russia Block Plan to Protect Antarctic Waters - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Saving the Southern Ocean: China, Russia Block Plan to Protect Antarctic Waters - SPIEGEL ONLINE | Water affairs | Scoop.it

Proposals to establish marine reserves in two critical areas of the Southern Ocean were stymied by Russia, China and Ukraine at the end of a two-week international summit in Australia on Thursday. Commercial fishing restrictions in the proposed sanctuaries proved to be the main sticking point.

A US-New Zealand plan foresaw a 1.6 million square kilometer protected area in the Ross Sea, while nations led by the EU and Australia had proposed a series of reserves encompassing 1.9 million square kilometers -- an area bigger than Alaska.

But these efforts were thwarted by resistance from China, Russia and Ukraine, which raised objections to fishing restrictions in the proposed reserve on the grounds they would have too much impact on their annual hauls.
