A Stunning Day in September: The Perspective of a Climate Activist - NationofChange

A Stunning Day in September: The Perspective of a Climate Activist - NationofChange | Warren55 | Scoop.it
Being at the People’s Climate March was awe inspiring. Waves of indigenous people, labor activists, faith organizations, college students, and environmental groups streamed through the streets of Manhattan flooding it, this time, with hope and optimism. The diverse groups embodied a collective conscience that showed how unchecked climate impacts would dwarf their other successes. They flew seagulls, hoisted colorful banners, rode an ark, posed with insightful signs, and played instruments in an unmatched visual spectacle. Over 300,000-plus people fed off the energy of enthusiastic marchers worldwide on screens dotted along the route. The lively event went mute at 12:58 p.m. when we observed a moment of silence for victims of the climate crisis. Then the rainbow of individuals sounded the alarm.

New painting welcomes visitors to Ann Arbor in 10 different languages

New painting welcomes visitors to Ann Arbor in 10 different languages | Warren55 | Scoop.it
ANN ARBOR, MI – There's a new message greeting people entering Ann Arbor via Ann Arbor-Saline Road near I-94.
"Welcome" is painted in 10 different languages — along with a white dove and an olive branch — on a roadside utility box.

It's meant to show visitors that Ann Arbor is a welcoming and inclusive community, said Rebecca Arends, a local business owner who came up with the idea after doing some soul searching following last week's election.

Arends teamed up with Cate Tinsley, the owner of Olive Leaf Stencils, to bring the idea to life on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Tinsley, an artist from New York who recently relocated to Ann Arbor, used stencils she created to do the painting.

"It was Rebecca's idea, but to me, it's a very hard-to-misinterpret symbol of peace and acceptance to show that there are still some of us who dream of a planet without borders," Tinsley said, adding such a message seems especially important due to recent hate crimes around the country.

Arends notes her great-grandmother immigrated to Michigan from Austria in the early part of the 20th century. Her mother came to Ann Arbor in 1975.

"I was the first of my family to be born here," Arends said, adding she's a better person for having lived in a compassionate community that values diversity.

"We truly are stronger together," she said. "No matter what your beliefs, I want the visitors to Ann Arbor to feel welcome. That is our identity as a town, and it's reflected in many of our choices we make with our voting patterns and actions of our elected leaders in City Council. We can all lead by example and maintain our commitment to openness and inclusiveness."

Arends, who has been using Tinsley's stencils to paint murals around town, said they were given permission from DTE Energy and the Ann Arbor Police Department to paint the "welcome" message on Tuesday. She said the supplies were covered by a donor who wants to remain anonymous.

Members of the Ann Arbor community have been finding different ways to stand against acts of hate and bigotry being reported across the nation.

The Ann Arbor-based Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice and the Interfaith Round Table of Washtenaw County launched a campaign earlier this year to spread signs and banners to counteract anti-refugee and anti-Muslim rhetoric that became prominent in the presidential campaign.

Many local congregations are now displaying banners that read "One Human Family: We support refugees and our Muslim neighbors." And many homes across the county have yard signs with the same message.

Now that there are more reports of anti-Muslim and anti-refugee attacks and hate speech since Donald Trump won the presidential election last week, supporters of the One Human Family campaign are planning to gather Thursday night, Nov. 17, for an organizing meeting in Ann Arbor to figure out ways the broader community can stand in support of inclusion and push back against intolerance.

6 Electric Car-Sharing Programs Better Than a Billion Teslas on the Road | Warren55 | Scoop.it
Tesla is finally taking the wraps off the Model 3, its first mass-market electric vehicle priced at an affordable $35,000. The car is expected to push EVs into the mainstream and reduce carbon emissions around the world. The only downside? Many cities don’t have enough charging stations to support widespread adoption of such vehicles.

The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant

The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant | Warren55 | Scoop.it

How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones."

Strike to End Prison Slavery : Indybay | Warren55 | Scoop.it
On September 10, over 300 people took part in a march, rally, and demonstration in solidarity with the ongoing Prison Strike happening across US prisons, jails, and detention facilities. People gathered at Latham Square in downtown Oakland where several speakers addressed the crowd. Grabbing banners, flags, and signs, people then took to the streets and marched to several corporations that profit from prison labor. AT&T, UPS, and Bank of America were called out for their use of prison labor.

Hard Work Or Natural Talent? Study Reveals What Impresses Hiring Managers The Most | Warren55 | Scoop.it

Trying to impress a hiring manager–without overdoing it–is essential to landing the job. But, what qualifications are most likely to give you a competitive edge? Should you emphasize the years of experience you have under your belt? Or will that cause the hiring manager to question why you haven’t moved up the ranks faster? Should you highlight the fact that achievement comes easily to you? Or will that make you sound lazy?
