TERA launches in the US, introduces new skill-based combat style in MMO

TERA launches in the US, introduces new skill-based combat style in MMO | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it
"Taking on World of Warcraft is no small task. Just ask the folks who made TERA, the massively multiplayer online world that launches in North America for the first time tomorrow, May 1." writes Dean Takahashi on Venture Beat.

What's interesting to me is that this is another attempt at moving out of the traditional WoW-type combat that Swtor imitated. Just like Guild Wars 2 that was announced recently.

“TERA ushers in a new era of true action MMO gameplay that advances the online roleplaying genre,” said Chris Lee, vice president of publishing at En Masse Entertainment. “It’s time to move past yesterday’s repetitive combat mechanics and embrace a more intense and deeply immersive approach to MMO gaming, where every player is actively engaged in skill-based combat and the most savvy players rise to the top through an innovative political system.”

Raid finder: too easy or just the right thing WoW needed?

Raid finder: too easy or just the right thing WoW needed? | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it

I've downed Deathwing this weekend.

I'm not trying to brag as I realize thousands of players if not millions probably have. That's apparently how easy WoW has become. It took me sweat, blood and tears to down the LK up to the point I became known in my guild as the unlucky one. And while I was a serious if not hardcore gamer at the time, I no longer am. I actually hadn't played within the last month and my playtime in the past 3 months probably totals less than 20 hours. Ok, I have some 5+ experience so upon resuming I knew where to go for stuff and how to pick it but still: how does Blizzard plan to keep us motivated when it became so easy to finish the game?

That's what I first thought.

And then I realized the other side of the coin was that there probably were millions of players frustrated just the other way round: having paid months of subscription and an expensive addon that they could never see the content of.

Now it became easy for them to live the full story and at the same time you don't get the highest set level in these raid tools encounters : so there's still something to grind your teeth on if you're a hardcore one.

I still feel this is the end for me : even though I hated it, I lack the positive frustration at never quite being able to get the @#!<>° Lich King killed. The trepidation try after try. The anxiety of getting everyone briefed correctly. An of course the joy, pride and relief of become a "kingslayer".

And I'm now spending my thoughts on how to get SWTOR run on my Mac....

But then again, I was probably lost for wow before that. 5 years playing, close to 6, not enough time anymore. Time to become a casual Jedi Consular!

Looking For Raid: a success of the new patch

I agree with this post from Blessing of Kings: LFR is not only doing what it should, ie bringing raiding opportunities to a larger part of WoW gamers, but it seems to avoid the pitfalls some predicted. It is somehow cahotic but which raid isn't? And as long as the group as a minimum core of capable players, it's viable. Long live PUG!

5 Reasons Why Guild Wars 2 Will Be A Revolutionary MMORPG

5 Reasons Why Guild Wars 2 Will Be A Revolutionary MMORPG | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it
It's a bit of a cliché: every time a new MMORPG is announced, it is promised to be a WoW-killer. And it never is. Unless SWTOR ends up being one but we can all agree that if it is it will e because of the power of the brand rather than the gameplay innovation.

Guild Wars 2 seems to be however genuine innovations worth looking at and summarized in that post. I particularly like the Skill-Based Action Combat: this has been a boring thing in WOW.

Activision Blizzard Considers Mobile To Boost WoW Subscribers

Activision Blizzard Considers Mobile To Boost WoW Subscribers | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it
"Mobile gaming is being touted as the next big thing in video games, and it is natural for a MMO as big as WoW to enter the mobile gaming market" writes Forbes.

But it's hard to imagine how this would work given the complex keyboard-relying interface. Would they do a mobile indépendant version? Even so, when you see how great games like Infinity Blade can be without the multiplayer part, it would be a great move.

Activision Jobs Cuts: Warcraft Losing Wow Factor? - Forbes

Activision Jobs Cuts: Warcraft Losing Wow Factor? - Forbes | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it
A declining subscription base of World of Warcraft has in turn taken a toll on the company’s recent stock performance.

What's disappoiting in the SWTOR-WOW battle is the lack of innovation on both sides. Blizzard - of all game developers - should have come out with the next generation of MMORPG as a way to react to SWTOR.

But no, they'd rather cut jobs and do Diablo 3...

World of Warcraft as a good example of the Collaboration Curve concept in Economy

World of Warcraft as a good example of the Collaboration Curve concept in Economy | Online Gaming For The Win | Scoop.it

Remember the Network Effect? That's what describes in economy the fact a lonely Fax Machine is useless but the more there are Fax Machines, the more useful they become.

Now, the Collaboration Curve is the Network Effect but sort of "to the square". This is what happens when elements of the Networks - or nodes - become increasingly efficient as more nodes exist. Kind of like if the Fax Machines became better and better, the more Fax Machines there were.

This HBR paper by John Hagel III and John Seely Brown predicts we'll see more and more Collaboration Curves in the future. But there's one at play for sure right now: World of Warcraft.

Interesting read.
