Great point on why stories and missions are not the only thing there is in a game. In my opinion though, single player games leave a lot of that aimlessness aside. its a lot more fun to me to go for a walk and chat aimlessly with another gamer than be on your own. The whole idea of Second Life - which critics to at article could point the lack of long term traction of - was to be an aimless game, wasn't it?
