World Drug Report 2012

World Drug Report 2012 | War on Drugs is a War on People | Scoop.it

Illicit drug markets have global dimensions and require coordinated responses on a comparable scale. In this context, the World Drug Report aims to improve understanding of the illicit drug problem and contribute to more international cooperation for countering it.
This year's edition begins with an overview of recent trends and the current situation in terms of production, trafficking and consumption and the consequences of illicit drug use in terms of treatment, drug-related diseases and drug-related deaths. The second chapter presents a long-term perspective: it looks at the main characteristics of the contemporary drug problem, the ways it has changed over the last few decades, the driving factors that shaped this evolution, and the directions it is likely to take in the future.

Special Report: Harm Reduction and the Global HIV Epidemic | War on Drugs is a War on People | Scoop.it

A  new report from amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, assesses the state of harm reduction worldwide by focusing on the steps that five sample countries—Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Ukraine, and Vietnam—have, or have not, taken to address the HIV epidemic among people who inject drugs (PWID). The report, titled Harm Reduction and the Global HIV Epidemic: Interventions to Prevent and Treat HIV Among People Who Inject Drugs, also examines the role of international donors, such as the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in funding and implementing HIV services for PWID.

Recommendations for the management of hepatitis C virus infection among people who inject drugs

In high income countries, the majority of new and existing hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections occur among people who inject drugs (PWID). In many low and middle income countries large HCV epidemics have also emerged among PWID populations. The burden of HCV-related liver disease among PWID is increasing, but treatment uptake remains extremely low. There are a number of barriers to care which should be considered and systematically addressed, but should not exclude PWID from HCV treatment. The rapid development of interferon-free direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for HCV infection has brought considerable optimism to the HCV sector, with the realistic hope that therapeutic intervention will soon provide near optimal efficacy with well-tolerated, short duration, all oral regimens. Further, it has been clearly demonstrated that HCV treatment is safe and effective across a broad range of multidisciplinary healthcare settings. Given the burden of HCV-related disease among PWID, strategies to enhance HCV assessment and treatment in this group are urgently needed. These recommendations demonstrate that treatment among PWID is feasible and provide a framework for HCV assessment and care.

Common Myths, Lies and Misconceptions Informing Drug Policy

Common Myths, Lies and Misconceptions Informing Drug Policy | War on Drugs is a War on People | Scoop.it

Drug law and policy has its roots in fear, ignorance, racism and vested interest. Sadly, this has changed little over the years. Drug law and policy continues to be shaped more by punitive populism and moral crusades rather than scientific evidence, reason and rationality.
