During the Civil War, many people still found happiness in music.  This song, which became a sort of anthem for the South (and still remains),  describes the feeling of the Southern states; a slower pace of life centered around family and agriculture.  It also mentions defending the South and it's way of life.  For many Confederate soldiers, this was the real fight: to preserve the Southern order and way of life.

The Civil War was a difficult time for women and girls, as well as for most children.  Millions of families said goodbye to fathers, brothers, uncles, and cousins as they fought for each side.  While they were gone, women and children kept the farms, businesses, and schools running.  In the South, where a majority of the battles took place, children often had to huddle together in basements to avoid being accidentally injured or killed.

THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC - YouTube

The most important song on the Union side during the war. This is dedicated to my great-grandfather, Cade Suran, who served in the 13th Indiana.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic was a song used by the Union to bring together the troops of the North.  It embodies the spirit of the Union and what they believed in, which was that the Union should survive and that all men are created equal.

The Battle Of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the Civil War, and gave the Union hope of an overall victory.  Fought in a small town, the Battle lasted three days and cause just under 50,000 deaths total (both sides).  The Confederate Army went to the small town in search of supplies, but met the Union there.  Unfortunately, the loss took away any chance that Britain or France would help the South fight the war.

The Gettysburg Address delivered by President Abraham Lincoln was one of the most significant speeches he ever gave.  Although short, President Lincoln solidified his position that the war was to keep the Union together, that all human have certain 'inalienable rights,' and that the lives of lost soldiers for the cause would not have been in vain.
