The last one for tonight, I promise.  But even better...it's 7 musicians.  2 hang-drums (of some sort), a box drum, bass guitar, acoustic guitar(amp'ed probably), keyboard, and a holed flute.

And listen to (1) the incredible things the guy does on that primitive, holed flute, and (2) in the middle, some of the incredible jazz flashes the guitar guy does...and you can tell he really digs it. :-)

wanderingsalsero's insight:

Here's another one of those 'Hang Drum' videos.  I like the sound.  This video is interesting because of (1) It's a duet so you'll hear deeper harmonies, (2) both guys (but especially the guy on the right, show some awesome finger-techniques, i.e. rolls, multiple taps per hand, etc., and (3) it's interesting to note that both guys have play multiple drums but each has one particular note that isn't as melodious.

For the guy on the right, it's the note all the way on the other side of his primary drum.  It just goes 'clungk'.  The guy on the left, toward the end of the routine, he uses the drum on his far left and it has a clunky sounding note on the 7:pm side.

But still...it's pretty.  I'd like to hear them play more Latin type stuff.  I'll bet they could.

The Petrodollar is collapsing, and it's one of the biggest opportunities in the world right now...
wanderingsalsero's insight:

This is one of the best high perspectives on the way the economy (and the world) is heading right now that I've every heard.  If you don't know why the petrodollar is a financial dodo bird, you should listen to this.

I remember several years ago there used to be a guy named Lindsey Williams, supposedly a pastor, who used to appear on Alex Jones and some other alternative news shows.  I liked him at first  but then I sorta got where I didn't like his style.  But I never found anything he said to be factually wrong.

He always claimed to have two secret friends, elite insiders from the oil business, who told him what they were actually planning.  One of the things I never forgot him describing was how the US was screwing other countries who were buying our debt (i.e. in the form of US Treasuries and bonds).

Simon talks about how that came about in the podcast in this article.  Basically it 'came down' like this:

Nixon took the US off the gold standard in 74, the US dollar started plummeting, Kissinger struck a deal with the Saudi's, who at that time were only beginning to crank up their oil production.

The deal was that they would buy our oil, in US dollars, and in return, we would give them protection and they would also buy our weapons (supporting the military-industrial complex).  That's how the 'petrodollar' started.

And, as Simon (in this podcast) describes, for 40+ years the US dollar has been THE global standard of financial exchange.  But the the is basically crapping on everybody right now and shoving everybody around.

Point is, they no longer have any reason to put up with it because the US doesn't have anything to offer.  We probably couldn't even afford any reasonably effective regional military campaign.

Point is, Simon says the same thing that Lindsey did, i.e. that when the dollar tanks (which is imminent), all those US dollar denominated securities are going to be worthless and there's going a lot of really pissed of debt-holders.

There's more to it of course but it's a very interesting podcast and I highly recommend it.  If you don't subscribe to www.sovereighnman.com I'd highly recommend it.  It's superlative.

Too many players vie in Kingdom’s ISP industry

Too many players vie in Kingdom’s ISP industry | Wandering Salsero | Scoop.it
Like the telecommunications industry in Cambodia, the market for internet service providers (ISP), too, is overcrowded, leading industry experts to say that the situation is preventing new investment.
wanderingsalsero's insight:

I'm currently trying to find out about internet quality in other parts of the world and now that Thailand is apparently making it impossible for foreigners to stay in their country for long periods of time by doing repetitive 'visa runs' I've been thinking about Cambodia, which I've heard some good things about.

Of course, I can't live without a decent internet service so....this article is not good news although I still have some more research to do. I'd really appreciate hearing from anybody who knows anything about the price and quality of internet service in Cambodia....especially Sihanoukville.

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I didn't realize this was the original group whose two albums I heard that first exposed me to this kind of music...but I now see that it is. Anyway, is a great concert to watch.  I see from the notes that it was their concert in Turkey.

I can only suppose that the reason a lot of it sounds Arabic is because I believe the Ottoman Turks and maybe even the Arabs before that ruled Bulgaria for a while.

The duo that sings around the 31 mark.... I don't know what they're saying but it sounds funny. Listen to some of those sounds they make.  You hear strange stuff like that in this style.  I wish I knew more about it.

It's all beautiful.

wanderingsalsero's insight:

I lied.  One more. Even more incredible.

To notice here:  The bass is a frettless 6 string. (I used to have one but I really couldn't play it :-)  Also...headless.

The guitar guy....his lower guitar neck is actually a 12 string!! but he does incredibly fast notes.  Amazing.  And catch the 'harmonic' chimes that he does right at the end.  That's very hard on a double stringed instrument.

He doesn't play the middle neck but he does, very briefly, strum the top 'mini' neck and it sounds like a sitar.

Uber cool.  That guy in the middle much be a musical genius.

Here's a company I just learned about today in the process of writing an article about it.

This lady is originally Korea, got to the states via her US foster-parents, and basically found her American Dream.  She's got a very successful business (which she started in college) that does good things for people, she's happily married with a supportive husband who is enthusiastically involved in her business (i.e. "their" business), great kids, and they enjoy a peaceful life in a Minneapolis suburb.

What more could one ask, right?
