This website has a great list of tips to promote global citizenship in the classroom. It includes “Assemblies, activities and goals to stimulate your global citizens.” Using these tips teachers can generate conversation with students about their feelings in regards to topics such as; human rights, world hunger and educational issues as some children are denied an education. These topics will resinate with students and will provoke emotions as they can think about what it would be like to be in these children's shoes. As a class discussion can include feelings but lead into conversation about “what can we do?” to be a global citizen and make the world a better place (such as fund-raising ect). References to get further information and organisations are provided as links so students can see what people are already doing to help.

As people gather today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, we look at images from that event in 1963 and from tumultuous times during the civil rights movement.

On August 28, 2013 it was the 50 year anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. There is a range of images provided on the site that I had never seen. It really opened my eyes to the visuals of this time, I particularly liked the photo where blacks and whites migrated on the bus after Luther's speech. It is hard to think of a world like this given our current views on race. I value what Martin Luther King Jr did for the Americans and I am keen to explore his impact on history further.

This book was written by Sir Henry Parks. He claims that it “is not a history nor yet an autobiography”. It is a retell of events from his point of view. It is a story of his residence in New South Wales over a fifty-three year period. Talking about his interest in the affairs of the colony after his arrival. It was nice to see someone else's point of view through a historical lens.

This website is about World War II, there is a range of information provided on this website. There is information that explains what happened during the war and peoples reactions to the war. This will allow students to form their own opinion on the war and think about how they would react if they were alive during the years of the war. I feel that this would be beneficial for the upper primary years because they can really analyse the information. An activity could require them to form their own opinion based on the events and talk about the consequences of war in the world and community.

The article “What is Reconciliation?” discusses Indigenous peoples rights due to Federation and what led to reconciliation. It discusses the hardships Aboriginals dealt with in the past and ways Australia is attempting to make up for those horrible actions. I feel like this has been a positive move forward for Australia but it definitely doesn't take away the painful memories held by many.

This link is a great teacher resource as it has a variety of teaching kits that include activities and research projects. The kits provide “Navigator” tables so that teachers can easily choose the activity that best fits their student group. There are a range of kits that relate directly to AusVELS including: The Settlement Of Victoria, Chinese on the Goldfields, Representing and Commemorating History, the Creswick Mining disaster of 1882 and Nineteenth Century Immigration.

Australia's Federation

I personally have heard about Federation and have memories from Primary School receiving a “Federation” Medallion, however I don't really know much about it. I really liked this text as it gave me an insight to aspects of federation such as; the Federal family, the nativity of the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth of Australia and Australia's first Federal Parliament. I think this will be handy for all teachers who need to refresh their knowledge.

This website contains a range of information about Australia's involvement in world wars, travel to historic military sites and educational resources.

This website is a great resource as it provides links to other sites that host activities to teach students about ANZAC day and the significance it has to Australia. The one link I think that is really interesting and would be great as an in class activity is the link to take a guided tour of Gallipoli. Students can take this audio tour on their ipad or ipod. It is really simple to download.

This site has other interactive activities such as images with descriptors. I feel that this type of website would be most suited to upper primary years.
