City Council OKs one-year deal with VVTA | deal, oks, one, barstow, vvta, city, year, council
Victor ValleyTransit Authority's insight:
BARSTOW • The City Council on Monday night decided to take the Victor Valley Transit Authority for a spin. “This is something I can live with,” Councilwoman Carmen Hernandez said just before the vote. The council voted 5-0 to approve the one-year trial run with VVTA to operate Barstow Area Transit. The temporary contract extension with MV Transit expired Dec. 31, prompting city staff to study a possible merger with Victor Valley Transit. Last year, the San Bernardino Associated Governments commissioned a study which determined that merging transit operations would result in significant operational enhancements and administrative cost savings for Barstow. If the City Council approves the merger, July 2015 is the soonest such an agreement could be made. However, Caltrans has informed the city that a third short-term contract extension with MV Transit is not a preferred option and offered two alternatives: Go out to bid for a new transit service provider; or contract with VVTA to operate Barstow Area Transit until a final determination is made regarding the proposed merger.
