A Galaxy Full of Alien Planets

A Galaxy Full of Alien Planets | VIM | Scoop.it

The latest study on the likely distribution of planets in our galaxy has found that at least 160 billion alien worlds exist in our Milky Way.

Astronomers say the survey, based on estimates and computer projects, means that at least 1.6 planets circle each star in our galaxy.

See how the alien planet population of our galaxy stacks up in the SPACE.com infographic above.

Space Junk Problem DetailedCredit: NASA/Orbital Debris Program Office.

Each dot represents a bit of known space junk that's at least 4 inches (10 cm) in low-Earth orbit, where the space station and shuttles roam.

In total, some 19,000 manmade objects this size or bigger orbit Earth as of July 2009; most are in low-Earth orbit.

Countless smaller objects are also circling the planet.

The first kilometre-sized space station is complete

Construction of this large-scale habitat and research facility was made possible by the International Space Elevator, built half a century previously.

This greatly reduced the cost of surface-to-orbit transportation - from tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram in the early 21st century, to less than a dollar per kilogram by the early 22nd.

Several other large-scale space stations have been appearing in Earth orbit during the last few decades - but this is the largest, and represents a new generation.

It contains an entire fusion power plant at its core, utilises a form of artificial gravity and is home to many hundreds of people and androids.

The commercial space industry is booming during this time, with a regular flow of traffic between Earth, the Moon and several near-Earth asteroids which are now being mined for raw materials

This artist concept depicts Space Shuttle Columbia docking with Ronald Reagan’s Space Station Freedom.

In this painting Columbia is equipped with the Extended Duration Orbiter (EDO) pallet which in this configuration would have allowed the shuttle to remain on orbit for 28 days.

Space Station Freedom eventually became the International Space Station

Tiny Planets Around a Tiny Star

Tiny Planets Around a Tiny Star | VIM | Scoop.it

On Jan. 11, 2012, astronomers announced the discovery of a miniature solar system made up of three tiny planets - all of them smaller than Earth - in orbit around the red dwarf star KOI-961 about 130 light-years from Earth.

The planets are the smallest alien worlds yet discovered and were found using NASA's Kepler space observatory.

See how the small alien planets stack up to our own solar system and Jupiter in the SPACE.com infographic above.
