Holley Jacobs's insight:

What is great is to see young adults stepping up the plate and volunteering. It brings me to tears because I know how much I get from volunteering. It seems to be more for me; I feel at times that volunteering does more for me than I do for a cause. I know this isn't true but volunteering is an experience like no other and it is wonderful seeing young adults receive recognition for their time.

Amanda Nadon-Langlois's curator insight, December 3, 2014 6:39 PM

As much as Volunteering is a great experience and great networking opportunity, volunteers are an essential part of non-profit organizations. Organizations should consider volunteers as so. Using proper tactics to make them aware of these opportunities, making sure they aren't overworked, and making sure they get rewards will keep those volunteers coming!

Autism - Beautiful Eyes

Autism - Beautiful Eyes | Volunteers & Nonprofits | Scoop.it
I haven't painted eyes in quite a while. I have slowly built the most beautiful results that you see in my newest gallery Summer Time.
Holley Jacobs's insight:

July 12th, 2013

I haven't painted eyes in quite a while. I have slowly built the most beautiful results that you see in my newest gallery Summer Time. Eyes are the one place you can look at someone and know their intentions, goals, determination, honesty, and trust that establishes their character. I also love painting eyes as they, to me, are a direct correlation of what a child with Autism is thinking or needing. Some would say that there is nothing there. I beg to differ and know that there is a human being, an innocent child, or a teenager behind those eyes. And behind those eyes there are goals, aspirations, and a loving compassionate person that is trying desperately to let this world into their own.

My son has Autism and was diagnosed almost 15 years ago and I have since, been around many children with Autism. Although they may not speak or show "typical" signs of understanding, they ALL really do on some level. It is our responsibility as parents, teachers, doctors, and the community at large to figure out the best way to assist them in communicating their needs and desires. They are not dumb; in fact, quite the opposite is true. They experience the same feelings as those without Autism. They are certainly a puzzle that we have to put together and then, they will be whole. Once whole they can begin to let us into their lives 100% of the time.

I am blessed and inspired by my son. He lights up my life and has my heart full of love for him beyond this universe. The bond that lies between a parent and a child who has Autism is one of the most powerful, understanding, complicated, and life long experiences I have ever had the pleasure to be allowed to participate in.

I know that my son, Jacob depends on me not for food, shelter, or clothes as the most important area of our relationship. Instead he depends on me to understand, protect, encourage, guide and forever be here when he needs me. That is one of the best feelings I have ever experienced. It is a bond that will never be broken because he trusts me 100%. He knows that mom will support him in any endeavor he chooses and has no limits or boundaries in what I would do to help him.
