Giving of yourself to something worthy benefits us all -- especially the giver!

Kristymay's curator insight, March 28, 2015 1:51 AM

Volunteering is important in nourishing healthy communities. People who generously give up their time for a cause they are willing to support will not only strengthen our communities, but also provide self-fulfilment. This article states that volunteering can have health benefits for the volunteer, including positive impacts to a person’s physical, mental and emotional health, as well purpose. I currently volunteer for a not for profit emergency services organisation where I have been volunteering for the past six years and have progressed within this organisation from a community member to a deputy group leader. As volunteering is a choice and a choice of what a person can chose to do for their volunteering, I believe this article is correct in stating that there are positive health benefits for both the community and the individual. For myself, volunteering definitely gives me a sense of purpose and a sense of community. The right match can also help volunteers find friends, learn new skills, and even advance their career. Part of this article was drawing on a study that was conducted by two health organisations researching health benefits for volunteers in America. The findings stated 78% of volunteers reported a decrease in their stress levels through volunteering and 76% felt physically healthier. These findings also showed the benefits of volunteering to furthermore help strengthen the communities as well as having “real” positive health benefits for the volunteer. I chose this article because I value volunteering in our community and within the next five years, I would personally like to be a group leader. The health benefits of volunteering are positive for myself and this article reflects these health benefits. I wish everyone would look into helping strengthen our community through volunteering and the benefits to yourself will show in you newfound health.

United Nations Volunteers: Volunteering needed to achieve sustainable development, says latest UN report on the post-2015 agenda

United Nations Volunteers: Volunteering needed to achieve sustainable development, says latest UN report on the post-2015 agenda | Volunteering Abroad | Scoop.it
New York, USA: Today the United Nations Development Group (UNDG) is presenting the cross-cutting messages from six thematic dialogues on the implementation of the post-2015 agenda taking place globally and at national level in 50 countries.

The UNDG report on “Delivering the post-2015 development agenda: Opportunities at the national and local levels” underlines the need to expand the concept of ‘means of implementation’ for the post-2015 agenda beyond traditional means such as finance, technology and institutional capacity building.

The report also highlights the need to engage communities in the design and implementation of the new development framework by stating: “Engagement and voluntary action can strengthen ownership, build individual capacity and help to address challenges in a sustainable way.” In particular, it mentions that “cross-sectoral partnerships and increased opportunities for civic engagement are needed to add value to the SDG implementation.”

UNV is co-leading the dialogues on Partnerships with Civil Society and is supporting countries organizing national dialogues on the six themes through its Field Units and dedicated post-2015 volunteers. UNV’s contribution to the post-2015 dialogues is summarized in a preliminary report.

In the UNDG report, messages from the dialogues on Partnerships with Civil Society explicitly stress the need to strengthen recognition of volunteerism and its added value: “To tap into the potential of volunteerism, public awareness also needs to be created about its benefits. Volunteerism can be seen as a cross-cutting means of implementation, producing benefits such as capacity-building, empowerment and social integration.”

The dialogues on Partnerships with Civil Society will conclude with a high-level event that summarizes outcomes from discussions held at the national and global level, scheduled for 20-21 October 2014 in Cambodia.

Why should YOU volunteer this summer?

Birkbeck Careers & Employability's curator insight, March 11, 2015 6:48 AM

Now that Spring has sprung and Summer is just peeping around the corner,  many students’ thoughts will turn to what they will be doing during the Summer Break. Are you thinking of lazing on a beach somewhere faraway or are you being proactive and wondering about internships and volunteering opportunities to help your CV stand out from the crowd. Perhaps you’re not sure how to decide between them. Both will allow you to gain experience that will be relevant to your career development. This article from Career Savvy gives you the lowdown on the benefits of both to help you make a choice. If you have fairly good idea of the career you want to follow,  you may want to go for an internship as it will give you a chance to dip your toe in and see whether you like a particular kind of job. Be prepared for intense competition for internships as they are paid and you’ll be assigned a project and a specific role. Get ready to have to jump through many different hoops as part of the selection process including  assessment centres and interviews. It’s all about enthusiasm,  drive and motivation so ratchet yours up! If you are not sure what Career you want to follow but would like to do something rewarding in a non-monetary sense and would like to develop many transferable skills and perhaps even learn a foreign language, volunteering could be for you. Both can vary in length and are a great way to extend your professional network. If they like you enough it can lead to a permanent job opportunity. Whichever you choose, both will highlight to an employer your efforts to gain valuable experience so don't procrastinate.  Are you finding it hard to decide or have you managed to obtain an internship or volunteering opportunity? How did you choose which one to pursue? Have you already completed one? How have you found that it has helped you? Let us know your experience.
