The Missing Link: Voice Acting in Video Games

There is a time for every activity under the sun. Many would survey the current gaming landscape and say that the time for fully-voiced video games is now. But there remains a stubborn few reluctant to recognise it, most notably Nintendo with its The Legend of Zelda series. With each generation of hardware a new Zelda title releases to widespread critical acclaim, and each time the question of the silent protagonist rears its ugly head. With the release of Skyward Sword, we again ask the question: when is it time for the hero to be silent, or has that time passed?

Grand Theft Auto V: That's Not Ray Liotta's Voiceover in the Trailer

I know Ray Liotta's voiceover and this is no Ray Liotta voiceover...not even close! Plus to my ear, it sounds like a younger actor who's trying to sound more "mature." Don't know how this ever escalated into an online rumor, other than some PR person trying to generate some free online publicity. And now I'm giving them even more, so I guess it was a pretty smart move...

Don't take it from me though...Here's a little critical listening exercise you can do yourself...If you want to hear what Ray Liotta's voiceover really sounds like, you can hear it here, in the opening clip from Goodfellas. (Warning: Graphic violence. If you're sqeamish, just listen to the audio.) http://youtu.be/iJ2RofOEAEU

Granted, Ray Liotta sounds a bit older now after 21 years, but not THAT different. Listen to him, then listen to the GTAV clip and draw your own conclusions...

IGN: "When the GTA V trailer broke, we debated if the Goodfella was providing a voice. Now, we know for sure."

Old Republic, New Breed of Game

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook then you've no doubt heard that I participated in the Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) Game Testing Program this weekend. Being an avid gamer and HUGE Star Wars geek, it was a lot of fun to be able to play the game a month before its release and give my feedback. It was also very interesting get some hands on time with the first ever fully-voiced massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). That's right, SWTOR boasts hundreds of thousands of lines of dialog voiced by over 70 actors. A daunting task, especially considering its player/non-player character (NPC) interaction system.
