Namibia. Vocational Training Is Crucial

Namibia. Vocational Training Is Crucial | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Namibia has to be careful not to put too much emphasis on having more tertiary graduates, while neglecting trade and craftsmanship training through vocational courses. There is a need to strike a balance between tertiary education and vocational training in order for the country to become a knowledge-based industrialised nation. http://www.newera.com.na/articles/46721/Vocational-training-is-crucial

A research centre in the UK recently found that lavishing praise on students, particularly low-attaining students, may be counter-productive. By providing a no-fail, no-consequences environment in which the top priority is to make everybody feel good about themselves, we are doing little more than setting young people up to fail.

Webinar. Government as Employer of Skilled Immigrants, Thursday, 30 October 2014, 13h30 to 14h30 (EDT) | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Governments are Canada’s largest employers. Yet, immigrants are only about half as likely to work in the public sector compared to the Canadian-born population. This is despite immigrants being a key factor in net labour force growth across Canada.
On October 30, join us for the release of the new ALLIES report Government as Employer of Skilled Immigrants by Wayland Consulting to find out what practices and policies various levels of governments are using to encourage the employment of immigrants. The presentation will also explore what governments can do to prepare for, and respond to demographic shifts in the labour force.

Surprise: A Majority of Millennials Don't Have a College Degree—That’s Going to Cost Everybody | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
A "silent majority" of young people without college degrees and decent jobs are on a downwardly-mobile slide.
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

There’s a lot of hoopla in the media about how Millennials are the best-educated generation in history, blah, blah, blah. But according to a Pew survey, that’s a distortion of reality. In fact, two-thirds of Millennials between ages 25 and 32 don’t have a bachelor's degree. The education gap among this generation is higher than for any other in history in terms of how those with a college degree will fare compared to those without. Reflecting a trend that has been gaining momentum in the rest of America, Millennials are rapidly getting sorted into winners and losers. Most of them are losing. That’s going to cost this generation a lot —and the rest of society, too.

How would a minimum wage increase affect utilization rates, benefit amounts, and government spending on safety net and income support programs?
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

If the minimum wage were raised to $10.10 an hour, 1.7 million Americans would no longer rely on government assistance, and government spending on current income-support programs would decline by at least $7.6 billion per year. This money could then be repurposed into either new programs or expansions of existing programs to fight poverty.

Webinar. How To Evaluate Mentoring, Friday, 7 November 2014 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM AED

How effective is your mentoring program?
What people are gaining from the mentoring?
Are there ways to improve the participant’s experience and outcomes?

With ever-increasing demands on resources, it is critical that mentoring is shown to have a positive impact on the organization that invests in it, as well as the people involved.

I’ve been helping organizations design and implement mentoring programs since 1994. I have worked with mentors and those who are mentored in Australia and overseas. I have reviewed many mentoring programs and seen what works and what doesn’t.

In this complimentary webinar you will discover the answer to three key questions:

What return on investment can reasonably be expected from mentoring?
Can you put "hard" measures on "soft" values?
What and how can you evaluate?
