The study makes a contribution to the growing body of research on youth unemployment and access to skills development in both the academic and policy development literature. Policymakers in both countries will find the report to be a useful resource for policy development and analysis which will inform future planning within the broad arena of youth development. Preventing Violent Extremism: What Role for Education and Training? | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Inclusive, comprehensive, context-specific and demand-oriented education and training as a driver to reduce inequalities and to improve the socio-economic environment of the youth could therefore be seen as an efficient tool to prevent extremism. One conclusion that can be drawn from this workshop is that a VSD approach to training seems more likely to channel PVE relevant elements than a more commonly used VET approach focusing on technical skills. Unfortunately the precise causal links between all the variables at stake are still based on assumptions, and more research is needed if we want to validate them and inform programmes and policies.

The G20 skills strategy for developing and using skills for the 21 century | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
This paper explains why a comprehensive skills strategy is needed and offers a comprehensive and integrated framework to assess and identify where policy action is needed to improve skill systems.



The framework put forward in this paper builds on the OECD Skills Strategy (2012) as well as the G20 Training Strategy (2010) and the conceptual framework underlying the World Indicators of Skills for Employment (WISE) database which was developed for the G20 Development Working Group. Building on these initiatives, the policy framework to develop and use skills better is designed around three main areas: i) Building skills for work and life; ii) encouraging firms to invest in skills; and iii) ensuring that skills are fully used (through better activation and matching of skills). Policies in these three areas are instrumental for achieving better economic and social outcomes. In addition, broader labour market settings that enable and provide the right incentives for skill acquisition, higher skill requirements and better skills use are also essential.

This is pretty interesting. I like the Polymath University because it reinforces the push towards cross-curricular or transcurricular learning in K-12 schools. As a liberal arts major, I also like the Neo-Liberal Arts College as it's pushing some current liberal arts programs to think more globally and more significantly across disciplines.

This is a preliminary study of the development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the New Zealand tertiary education sector.  It is a research study, involving a series of original interviews with those involved in MOOCs as staff, senior leaders and developers in universities and polytechnics, union and student leaders and several officials from government agencies who had an interest in the field.  The study also includes a brief literature search and a large collection of newspaper articles and reviews.

Two major universities are set to allow students to earn course credits which will go towards their final degree through massive open online courses (Moocs) for the very first time in the UK.

The move, announced by online learning platform FutureLearn, will see the Open University (OU) and the University of Leeds allow students the opportunity to study for part of a degree or MBA course before progressing further.

and Comparative
Perspectives

After countless meetings, debates and advocacy, there is now a final version of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the SDG 4 on Education, that was confirmed at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on the 25th September 2015. Global target setting is still a relatively young art, and there is much to be learnt from its short history about the ownership of the process, the roles of developed and developing economies, and the actual status of global targets over against national and regional plans. The policy history of global goals and targets is arguably inseparable from that of global and regional education commissions, and from universal declarations and conventions. But the very process of targetisation elevates targets over text. Equally, the requirement to ‘go global’ and to be ‘universal’ raises the bar much beyond what is feasible for many developing countries. The Education SDG 4 is just a small part of a much larger UN development ambition. It may be essential, therefore, to be aware of what is also being proposed for education in the SDGs relating to decent work, health, and climate change, not to mention the proposed financing of the SDG aspirations and the plans for their compliance and governance.

Despite spending more per capita on education per student than any other country and a world-renowned university system, few students in America are inspired from a young age to pursue these critical fields, a trend that some are hoping to reverse.
