Many of our customers use IPv6 networks in their datacenters for a variety of reasons. We expect that many more will transition from IPv4 to IPv6 to reap the large address range and other benefits that IPv6 provides. Keeping this in mind, we have worked on a number of performance enhancements for the way that vSphere 5.5 manages IPv6 network traffic.
Build a vCloud lab is interesting to increase your skill and knowledge, make some test and of course preparing for the VCAP-CIA exam. If you build on a ESXi nested environment you will not have too much problem (except with old hardware that may not support complete ESXi nesting with vSphere 5.1).
The NFR license program allows practicing IT pros with the VMware VCP, VCI, and vExpert designations as well as Microsoft MCP, MCTS, and MVP holders to get up to two CPU sockets of Veeam Backup & Replication. These CPU socket licenses are fully functional but are intended to be used in a non-production environment, such as a home lab.
Energy company Eni has released details about an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) installation at its new data center in Ferrera Erbognone, in Pavia, Italy that has helped it achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of less than 1.2.
Phase two of the data center in Northern Italy, which covers 5,200 sq m and sits adjacent to Eni’s power plant, is in the process of positioning and configuring 55 200kW UPS systems by Borris SpA.
Borri has designed a transformer-free UPS for Eni, which has proved 99.5% efficiency at half load as independently tested by TUV Rheinland. Borri managing director Ian Tucker said the units can achieve an average efficiency of 93%, which he said equates to €600,000 - or 3,000 tons of Co2 - savings per year.
The vCloud® Service Evaluation provides a quick and easy way to learn about the advantages of a vCloud through hands-on testing and experimentation.
You'll be able to add an enterprise-class cloud to your infrastructure within minutes and seamlessly migrate workloads between your existing private cloud, the vCloud Service Evaluation, and VMware's extensive ecosystem of service providers.
This presentation will cover the topic of optimizing storage by looking at the following subjects, storage virtualization, dynamic tiering, space reclamation, SSDs, power and space efficiency & data protection.
According to Daniel Bellini, CIO at Ducati Motor Holding, “Flexibility and agility was benefit number one” when deploying a private cloud with VMware. With VMware vCloud Director, Ducati has been able to “deploy applications, solutions, services, and new architectures in an incredibly short time."
Ducati Motor Holding is a high-performance motorcycle designer and manufacturer, based out of Bologna, Italy. Though Ducati is a relatively small company with around 1,000 employees and sales of 40,000 units a year, they have all the complexities of a multinational manufacturing company in terms of product configuration, supply chain, and distribution network articulation.
This was a neat little trick that I picked up in one of our internal storage email distribution groups which I thought was quite interesting. Some of you may recall an article I wrote a few years back on how to trick ESXi 5 in seeing an SSD device which relied on adding an SATP rule for a particular storage device. The actual use case for this feature was that not all real SSD devices would automatically be detected by ESXi and this allowed a user to manually mark it as an SSD
vPi aims to provide a “plug and play” platform for administrators, consultants, or anyone else really, to use to connect up to any VMware vSphere virtual infrastructure and quickly and easily perform administration tasks, gather information, or run scripts against it.
You could even think of it as a beefed up mobile vMA appliance, with a huge scope for customisation.

Giovanni Perteghella's insight:
VMware has completed the 3rd annual VMware Cloud Index in 2012, the largest regional cloud-related study in Asia Pacific. The VMware Cloud Index 2012 is a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting and ITR in Japan. The 2012 study surveyed approximately 6,500 senior IT practitioners across the APJ region in eleven countries / regions (Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) in September and October 2012.

VMware Auto Deploy, a feature available with VMware vSphere 5.0, combines the features of host profiles, VMware Image Builder, and Preboot Execution Environment (PXE)―a network boot using PXE―to simplify the task of managing VMware ESXi hypervisor installation and upgrades for hundreds of machines. VMware ESXi host images are centrally stored in the VMware Auto Deploy library. New hosts are automatically provisioned, based on rules defined by the user. Rebuilding a server to a clean state is as simple as a reboot. To move between VMware ESXi versions, simply update a rule using the VMware Auto Deploy PowerCLI and perform a test compliance and repair operation. VMware Auto Deploy customizes VMware ESXi systems using host profiles and other information stored on the managing VMware vCenter Server system. You can set up the environment to use different images and different host profiles for different hosts. VMware Auto Deploy can be installed on a standalone Microsoft Windows host virtual machine or on the VMware vCenter Server itself. It also ships with the VMware vCenter Server appliance. In either case, it is registered with a VMware vCenter Server. VMware Auto Deploy works in tandem with Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP), Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP), and the VMware vCenter Server. The PXE boot image is downloaded, and the preboot environment runs on the host. It contacts the VMware Auto Deploy server, which checks the rule engine based on which image is offered to the host and which host profile is applied
