Data Visualization Tips: Avoid Yak Shaving

Data Visualization Tips: Avoid Yak Shaving | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it

Curated by Beth Kanter

http://www.bethkanter.org

Good tips here.  Especially like the term "yak" shaving from Seth Godin (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2005/03/dont_shave_that.html)

A corollary and contradictory point to the last: Sometimes you need to indulge in yak shaving. “Yak shaving” is a term used particularly by geeks to describe the receding path of prerequisite steps you may find yourself on while completing what appeared to be a simple task.

Yak shaving can distract you from your original goal, (“I just wanted to get the text out of this PDF, and suddenly I find myself researching Java memory resources”), and it often means you’re overlooking a more direct route to getting the job done (“So, have you tried copy and paste?” “Aaargh!”).

But it can also lead you to learn things that otherwise would forever remain on the someday/maybe list. As long as a) it isn’t depleting all the time and energy you’ve reserved for the project and b) there is intrinsic interest and potential value for future projects, then I say “shave away.” Just try to follow Henry James’ advice to writers: “Try to be one of those on whom nothing is lost.”

How Facebook's New Machine Brain Will Learn All About You From Your Photos

How Facebook's New Machine Brain Will Learn All About You From Your Photos | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it
Facebook poaches an NYU machine learning star to start a new AI lab that may very well end up knowing more about your social life than you do.

Facebook users upload 350 million photos onto the social network every day, far beyond the ability of human beings to comprehensively look at, much less analyze. And so that’s one big reason the company just hired NYU machine learning expert Yann LeCun as director of Facebook’s new AI laboratory, an eminent practitioner of an artificial intelligence (AI) technique known as “deep learning.”

“Yann LeCun's move will be an exciting step both for machine learning and for Facebook, which has a lot of unique social data,” says Andrew Ng, who directs the Stanford Artifical Intelligence Laboratory and who led a deep-learning project to analyze YouTube video for Google. “Machine learning is already used in hundreds of places throughout Facebook, ranging from photo tagging to ranking articles to your newsfeed. Better machine learning will be able to help improve all of these features, as well as help Facebook create new applications that none of us have dreamed of yet.”

Data visualisation success hinges on solid storytelling skills

Data visualisation success hinges on solid storytelling skills | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it
Learn more about the value of data visualisation. Tableau's Jock Mackinlay explains why data is inert and worthless without the twin practices of visualisation and storytelling.

This is a quick piece that makes some valuable points. Frankly, I'm not a hard-core data head. Yet I love looking at spreadsheets, bar charts, line charts and other visual displays of data in order to make meaning of the material and spot trends.

There is a whole science to displaying data in meaningful ways (see Edward Tufte's work) that we don't need to go into here. But what I like about this article is that it points to the fact that all the data in the world is meaningless until you can tell the story about what it is saying and what it means.

Storytelling and data go hand-in-hand.

Truly, those of us in the field of business storytelling need to build our data skills. And data-geeks need to develop their storytelling skills. Sounds like a match made in heaven!

Here's another aspect of storytelling that this article alludes to: yes, we all know it takes time to share a story and in this fast-paced world, it is not uncommon to hear "But who has the time?! Just give me the data to share. We've got to get moving!"  Ahhhhh -- huge mistake! Taking the time to share a story in the beginning makes projects go much more quickly.

That sounds counter-intuitive, but I experience this phenomenon again and again.

Read the article for additional points on how the marriage of data and storytelling make for better decision making. They are worth remembering.

Beth Kanter's insight:

from Mashable article (http://mashable.com/2013/10/01/data-viz-sites/)

A mildly tongue-in-cheek blog, Chart Porn curates a number of graphics, from simple charts to complex data visualizations, and drops them into posts with a one-sentence description. Many of the graphics come from news outlets such as The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal.

There are also a surprising number of financial and political graphics, fitting for a blog edited by an economist who doubles as an artist.
