How to use FF Chartwell

How to use FF Chartwell | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it

Curated by Beth Kanter

FF Chartwell Font

This font lets you take simple strings of numbers and transform them into charts. The visualized data remains editable, allowing for hassle-free updates and styling.   I have been looking for something like this to create better looking charts and graphs than what excel, powerpoint, or survey monkey can do with their built in chart generators which are ugly.

The demo screencast uses Photoshop, so I had look up how to find the Open Type menu for WORD.    You have to go to the advanced menus on fonts which is a little arrow underneath the basic font commands.  I was hoping I could use in PPT, but PPT does not have Open Type integrated.  You can use it in Publisher.  It requires exporting as a jpg.

Slightly more tedious but it slowed me down enough to think about how I wanted to present the findings - what was the insight to ask.

Visualizing the Killing of Women and Girls in Syria with WIRED UK

Visualizing the Killing of Women and Girls in Syria with WIRED UK | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it
SumAll.org and Humanitarian Tracker teamed up with WIRED UK to visualize data about the killing of women and girls in Syria.

Image via WIRED UK

SumAll.org has been working with Humanitarian Tracker since early 2013 to analyze causes of death for civilians in the Syria crisis using crowdsourced and verified data. Our work was featured in the July 2014 issue of WIRED UK in an infographic titled War’s Wheel of Destruction, which illustrates the causes of death for women and girls. The infographic highlights specific types of killings, identifying them as targeted attacks, in pink, or collateral damage, in yellow.

Crowdsourcing Crisis Data Collection

Crowdsourcing is all the rage. Yet while usually associated with funding creative projects or providing resources to students, crowdsourcing can also be leveraged as a critical tool in times of crisis. From the earthquake in Haiti to Hurricane Sandy, citizens and civic techies have joined together to use crowdsourcing as a way to quickly gather information in times of crisis. The data collected from these sources can send rapid alerts to humanitarian organizations, while also providing critical information for journalists, stakeholders and citizens.

SumAll.org’s partner Humanitarian Tracker is a crowdsourcing initiative developed by Syrian-Americans based in the United States. Syria Tracker, a project of Humanitarian Tracker, has been crowdsourcing information on casualties in Syria since April 2011; they rely primarily on existing networks and organizations in Syria that submit online reports to their website. They also carry out data-mining of social media and produce separate aggregate reports on deaths and other violations. Syria Tracker makes all of its aggregated and disaggregated data available on its website.

For more information on female, and other, killings in Syria, see our white paper: Rising Proportion of Female Deaths in Syria and our interactive dashboard. Additional information on this project is available on SumAll.org’s website.

Fundraising infographics

Fundraising infographics | Visualization Techniques and Practice | Scoop.it
Infographics can be powerful communications tools for fundraisers. Done well, they can express complex issues in a compelling way and demonstrate impact. A form of curation, they can also demonstrate a charity's expertise on its subject. They are one way that charities and nonprofits can harness 'big data' - theirs, and that of others. They also tend to be shared widely via digital media. Which fundraising infographics have we missed? Find us at www.fundraising.co.uk.

Visual Skills to the ticket out of being overwhelmed

--------------

This piece was posted by Loren Sorenson for Hubspot, I selected it because as she says "If you aren’t prepared for the visual content revolution, you may be left in the dust.

Not convinced? Let's take a look at exactly how visual contentis positively contributing to marketing strategies -- it may just give you the push you need

"Learn why visual content is a critical part of your content creation strategy.

Here are some highlights:

**People remember only 20% of what they read

**83% of learning is visual

Condenses and Explains Large Amounts of Information

**Today, there is too much information on the Internet you have about 3 seconds to catch someone’s eyes so they'll consume your information.

Gives Your Brand an Identity

**Visual content draws people in, letting viewers better understand your brand's identity

Drives User Engagement

**If you've ever read a book with a child, you probably know they find pictures more interesting than words; but are adults really that different?

9 major types of visual content

What are we specifically talking about when we talk about visual content? I sometimes lose track of this myself. There will eventually be an end product to a visual content strategy. Here are the most common ways that marketers create visual content.

  • Eye-catching, creative photography --- think stock photos or Instagram pics
  • Video --- YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia embedded right into a post or shared directly to social media
  • Screenshots --- helpful images of your product or workflow
  • Infographics --- visual information, either super long and meaty or bite-sized and informative
  • Data visualization --- standalone charts and graphs (example)
  • Comics --- relevant comic strips or cartoons (example)
  • Memes --- popular memes customized to fit the context of your post or update (example)
  • Visual note-taking --- casually-designed layout of ideas, typically text-heavy (example)
  • Miscellaneous graphics --- images that complement the content, e.g. the images in the above section on Golden Ratio and Fibonacci Sequence
