Sueños del Océano Índigo - Paquete de libros

Sueños del Océano Índigo - Paquete de libros | Viva el Español | Scoop.it
Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

Stress Free Kids publishes audio and picture books that help children reduce stress and lower anxiety. These stories are available in Spanish and are fabulous language-learning tools. The stories teach relaxation techniques, but their structure and objective also create an excellent Spanish learning experience. As children listen to these stories, they relax, but they are never passive. Children participate, both physically and by actively using their imaginations.

Libros Arellano

Libros Arellano | Viva el Español | Scoop.it

Our stories are about “typical” suburban activities, like going out to eat, going to the airport, and riding bike in the neighborhood. We hope that the youngest children will enjoy hearing these stories read to them, while older, beginning readers, will enjoy reading them independently.

Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

The language in the books is relevant, useful and natural. The stories reflect typical settings and experiences, like going to the library, going to the grocery store or getting a check up. There is also very close text-to-illustration correspondence.

Tú eres mi sol (de la mañana) / You Are My Sunshine

Tú eres mi sol (de la mañana) / You Are My Sunshine | Viva el Español | Scoop.it

Douglas Wright is a poet, author and illustrator from Argentina. I love his Spanish poems for kids learning the language because many of them use common vocabulary, natural syntax and short sentences. He sets many of them to music and singing the Spanish songs kids can easily memorize the words.

Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

He has done a loose translation of the classic song You are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis y Charles Mitchell.  I like singing this Spanish song with kids because it is a happy, familiar tune.

Chop Chop Magazine - Family Cooking Magazine in Spanish!

Chop Chop Magazine - Family Cooking Magazine in Spanish! | Viva el Español | Scoop.it

Chop Chop is a family cooking magazine published in both Spanish and English. This amazing magazine won the prestigious 2013 James Beard Foundation Award for Publication of the Year.

Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

Chop Chop is a wonderful resource for learning Spanish with children

Cooking is a hands-on activity.
Moving and doing make language learning happen. When children read, for example, Pon las rebanadas en una bolsa de plástico resellable y métela en el congelador, the action of putting the slices (of banana, in this case) in the bag and the bag in the freezer help them process the words at a deeper level.

Photos provide visual support for the language.
Chop Chop has great photographs. Many of them are labeled with specific captions, and the photos clarify the language.

There is built-in repetition.
Ingredients and verbs are repeated from recipe to recipe. And, the layout of Chop Chop is remarkably consistent in terms of language. Headings such as ¿Lo sabías?, Consejo de seguridad and ¡Hazlo elegante! introduce interesting and important information in every issue.

Chop Chop is a multicultural magazine.
Chop Chop offers recipes with roots in many world cultures.

The language is real and relevant.
When language is being used to communicate real information, it will be retained.

Children build positive associations with Spanish.
Connecting a fun activity and a sense of accomplishment to Spanish builds positive associations that last well beyond any one recipe.

Chop Chop loves language.
Chop Chop is a cooking magazine, but it is also a language magazine. From the glosario , to the word search, to the conversation questions in Conversación en la mesa, the language is fun and engaging.

A story in Spanish. Different colored flowers announce the arrival of spring. Key vocab: flor, rojo, rosa, amarillo, anaranjado, blanco, azul, reir, sonreir, volar, llegar, decir, niño, gato
Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

The story is in the preterite tense. It has a simple pattern that rhymes the verb form llegó with another verb in the third person singular of the preterite. The text includes colors and common vocabulary.

Colors - Memory Game

Margaret Grover-Roos's insight:

A fun way to learn the Spanish colors. Kids see and hear a sequence and try to repeat if by clicking on the correct colors. The photo that players click on is of toenails painted different colors. It is cute, something different, and makes little Spanish learners smile. The audio is very clear and the timing in the game is good. The colors are not repeated too quickly.

BookBox: A book for every child in his/her language BookBox is a social enterprise that innovated the concept of "AniBooks" or animated books to support emergent literacy and language skills.

AniBooks flow from a simple fact -- children love to watch cartoons. Thus, AniBooks are animated stories for children, with the narration appearing on-screen as Same Language Subtitles (SLS).

In our conception a "book" is a reading experience that can travel in print and other audio-visual media. Our aim is to provide an online portal where children have fun and subconsciously improve their reading skills. The FREE BookBox App for the iPad is out!
