2011 Redux: Screwcap vs. Cork: Which is Greener?

2011 Redux: Screwcap vs. Cork: Which is Greener? | Vitabella Wine Daily Gossip | Scoop.it
This is not your typical cork versus screw cap article. This is the only time I will use the word “oxygen” in this piece. Search for “cork vs. screw cap” and you’ll find plenty of discussions on reduction-oxidation chemistry, an increasing amount of data, and plenty of arguing.

The ascendency of "natural" wines has taken us back to the days of actively faulty wines... | Vitabella Wine Daily Gossip | Scoop.it

The ascendency of "natural" wines - produced with as little human intervention as possible, and little or no sulphor dioxide, has, however, taken us back to the days of actively faulty wines, in much the same way that the decision by a generation of British mothers not to give their children MMR immunisation jabs has recently led to over 1200 cases of measles.

Oenophiles at Loggerheads

Oenophiles at Loggerheads | Vitabella Wine Daily Gossip | Scoop.it

Few issues get wine lovers as worked up as the question of whether to ferment or age wine in wooden barrels, usually made of oak. Doing so can help mellow the wine and add structure, richness and complexity. Done with a heavy hand, it can also smother the wine with the vanilla-like flavor of oak, obscuring its fruit, freshness and origins.

The Best of NZ Chardonnay

The Best of NZ Chardonnay | Vitabella Wine Daily Gossip | Scoop.it

The standard of New Zealand Chardonnay ought to be better. After living in Middle Earth for more than three years, there are few Kiwi Chardonnays that have escaped my glass. Unfortunately, an astounding number have been about as inspiring as a day out with a librarian. It’s sad but true that the vast majority of Kiwi Chardonnays have thus far failed to reach their potential. We have a cool, maritime climate with abundant sunshine. If Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir thrive here, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Chardonnay should be right at home.
