Why Ikea's Mostly Computer Generated Catalog Will Soon Be the Norm

Why Ikea's Mostly Computer Generated Catalog Will Soon Be the Norm | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it
The rooms in Ikea's catalogs may look like wonderlands of inexpensive furniture, but they're mostly computer generated. Like, 75 percent computer generated. The Swedish juggernaut has experimented with CG product shots for almost a decade now, and it's getting incredibly good at it. But it's far from the only company doing it.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Excellent article introducing virtual marketing (digital production). In my experience working with product manufacturers (automotive, apparel, consumer product, industrial design, etc) it's become very rare to see real products photographed. Everything is virtual these days, allowing for more product skus, faster development, and lower cost production. Add to this - mass customization and consumer choice digital is the only way to go.

Products like Iray, Vray, and other renderers and visualization packages (3DXcite, Bunkspeed, Autodesk) are helping enable this.

Never been a better time to be in 3D!

Only the Best HDR Light Studio Support in Bunkspeed 2014

Only the Best HDR Light Studio Support in Bunkspeed 2014 | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Bunkspeed 2014 products now support a seamless live integration with HDR Light Studio 4… providing an amazing new lighting experience.

Lightmap and Bunkspeed have worked closely to develop a tight integration that provides seamless new lighting features for Bunkspeed users. For example, placing lights in the shot is as simple as clicking on the model in the render view...

More also at http://blog.bunkspeed.com/?p=1837

Jed Fisher's insight:

 1+1=3!

What do you get when you combine two of the best 3D products out there - an insanely awesome experience!

Well done to Bunkspeed and Lightmap for their product integration. Really happy to see this.

To make a beautiful CGI picture you need a 3D model, materials, and lighting.  The formula being:

Beautiful Image = beautiful 3D model + beautiful materials + beautiful lighting.

Model - use your favorite 3D/CAD package,

Material & Environment - use Bunkspeed,

Light - with HDR  Light Studio,

(And with NVIDIA GPU hardware it's even better/faster)

These product matchup perfectly together.

Bunkspeed is well known and loved for their super simple to use product with it's great user experience. Now with HDR Light Studio integration this goes even further, HDR Light Studio like Bunkspeed has a great UX -  allowing you to "paint" light on with it's "LightPaint" technology.

Nice job! Fantastic to see.

Full disclosure - It's my honor to share that 4D Pipeline provides services to these awesome companies (Bunkspeed, Lightmap, and also NVIDIA). (Also Image courtesy of Daniel Simon - if you've not heard him speak or seen his work - catch his talk at the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference)

Fast. Easy. Fun. BUNKSPEED 2014 Released! | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

VISUALIZATION AT BUNKSPEED.

Powerful and intuitive rendering software.

FAST. EASY. FUN.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Well done and congrats to our clients at Bunkspeed. They've just released their 2014 versions of their software!!

This is a fantastic release with some big improvements across the product line. At Siggraph I bumped into a couple of their customers and it was a pleasure to hear how happy their client base is with Shot, Pro, and Drive.

Lagoa Debuts Cloud Based 3D Design Platform, Raises $1.6M From 500 Startups

Lagoa Debuts Cloud Based 3D Design Platform, Raises $1.6M From 500 Startups | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Atlas | TechCrunch

From physical to digital rendering, 3D is being hailed by many as the future, and today, Lagoa, one of software startups in this space, is unveiling a new product, called Lagoa, that's helping 3D enter a new dimension: a full 3D rendering and...
Jed Fisher's insight:

This is not as they claim and "Industry First". In fact it amazes me that companies (this is one of a few) are getting funding for this. It's basically grab iRay, add a web UI, and wah lah, physically correct cloud rendering. So why are we seeing them succeed? (or at least gain funding) especially when there are plenty of great companies out there that are clear leaders in this space (RTT, Bunkspeed, ...). So why? 1. consumer approach - it's questionable whether or not this is a smart business model for this type of solution but nevertheless Consumer focus is popular to investors; 2. "reimagining" again popular with investors, trying to take a new approach to a space that has been a red ocean space. 3. cloud, access anywhere. Now it is darn helpful to have cloud based raytracing which can be run from any device and does not require the hardware. It's also good to have a focused business/product on this. 4. Visual. One thing I love about 3D and visualization is people SEE it, they GET it. 5. Simplicity. One thing, one product, one focus. The 2012/2013 companies do this well. Do one thing and do it well. TinkerCAD was a recent casualty in this space. Will be interesting to see how these guys go. I'll be watching

Jed Fisher's insight:

Exciting (no pun intended) event as always. RTT will now be known as Dassault 3DXcite and adds itself to the Dassault 3D Experience.

This years event featured many of the major car companies, glorious raytracing, compelling interactive experiences, and cars, cars, and cars!

Lagoa Acquires 3D Editor 3DTin

Lagoa Acquires 3D Editor 3DTin | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Montreal-based Lagoa has acquired in-browser 3D editor 3DTin. The company announced its acquisition on its blog. 3DTin is used for 3D model and 3D printing...
Jed Fisher's insight:

Nice move by Lagoa. After TinkerCAD almost/essential went bust earlier this year (only to be acquired at the last minute by Autodesk) Lagoa has bought up their competitor 3DTin.

Lagoa now has a nice cloud renderer, developer API, and now content createion in the cloud + 3D Printing.

Power of Quadro, Coming Soon in Concentrated Form

Power of Quadro, Coming Soon in Concentrated Form | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

A machine for designers, engineers and architects looking to be productive, and stylish, anywhere. Featuring the industry’s largest 8GB frame buffer with a Quadro K5100M GPU and NVIDIA Kepler architecture.

Jed Fisher's insight:

This beast was launched at Siggraph, and for many of the 3D/raytracing apps that we work with, the frame buffer size actually makes the mobile platform a very nice solution for applications that are in need of both horsepower and also graphics memory.

Well done to our friend Shawn Worsell, and our client NVIDIA.
