The 6 challenges of building an iBeacon app

The 6 challenges of building an iBeacon app | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

What every developer building for iBeacon needs to know.

Using iBeacon, Apple’s low-powered method of pushing contextual notifications to iPhones in stores, introduces a bunch of messy moving parts, I discovered recently while building an app for the Gluecon conference.

Despite being an experienced iOS developer, I faced the following six distinct challenges.

Jed Fisher's insight:

At 4D Pipeline we are getting a lot of requests (and recommending) for Apps to work with iBeacon. It's a great technology for sales and marketing apps but as with any technology there are some important facts to keep in mind. This is a good article although i must admit we've not run into many of these problems.

Perhaps competition creates innovation but as a user i'm totally frustrated. I've got my google friends, my apple friends, and my one Microsoft friend ;-)

Google services are increasingly "log in with gmail".

Apple services are increasingly "log in with apple".

Browsers/Calendars/Emails/Photosharing/Filesharing, etc all these things are increasingly getting LESS compatible.

Need idea from Metaio - they are experimenting with using an infrared camera and AR feedback to turn "any" surface into a touchscreen.

The infrared is neat as it can (sometimes) detect if a surface has been actually touched (or if the finger was just hovering over it).

The tech still looks early days but it's a nice idea which might work.

I never expected to buy another camera (except for future phones) however this changes my mind. 360 photos and videos are not only great for 3D HDR environments but also for capturing a moment. Imagine being able to "look around" the photo/video/moment.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has achieved incredible penetration in the vertical construction market in North America and in several Northern European and Asian countries.

A recent 2014 McGraw Hill Construction report analyzes survey data collected from construction companies that use BiM.  The survey was conducted in nine of the world’s important construction markets.  The data and analysis in this report are based on an online survey conducted with 727 contractors in ten countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US).

CL3VER: Cloud based editor to create 3D presentations for Architects

THE PROBLEM
To sell projects effectively, it is key for architects to communicate and adapt concepts and designs efficiently. 2D plans, images and videos leave space for misunderstandings which delays the decision process, This is frustrating for both you and your client since both of you want to start building as soon as possible!

THE SOLUTION
At CL3VER we have developed the first professional cloud based platform to enable clients to see their building from different angles, inside or outside, see and compare alternative designs and get your project approved in a shorter time.
With CL3VER you can create interactive 3D presentations of your buildings without install anything in your computer, because you already have what you need: an internet browser.

Via oscar lopez
Jed Fisher's insight:

Impressed with CL3VER's evolution, at one point they had were "just another webgl viewer" but they have refined their feature set and functionality and targeted primarily Architects for effective communications. They've also streamlined their product. And have teamed up with companies such as bim+

Safari On iOS8 Supports WebGL - The New Era Can Now Commence

Safari On iOS8 Supports WebGL - The New Era Can Now Commence | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

The biggest announcement at WWDC has mostly gone unnoticed and uncommented - WebGL support in the Safari browser on OSX and iOS. At last the big browsers all support 3D graphics and web apps and web games in particular are effectively universal.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Breaking news - WebGL will be supported on iOS!!

At 4D Pipeline we do a lot of webgl development as well as a lot of iOS OpenGL development. Previously WebGL was not able to be played on iOS but from iOS8 it finally will be!

With Internet Explorer now supporting it and iOS8 now supporting it - this removes the final roadblocks webgl has been facing.

Not only is it supported in the Safari browser but in WebView as well, which means that native apps that want to show HTML content can now show it including advanced graphics!

Note: Also worth noting the iOS Metal 3D announcement

http://time.com/2814252/apples-metal-ios/

This improves the native 3D api for the iOS A7 chip, thus iOS 8 native apps should be able to outperform webgl by ~5-10x

A lesson to why putting the customer first matters.

"Developers" like to build. Creating a great product is more than just this.

Creating a product requires a clear Definition (positioning, biz model, purpose, ...), Design (UX which a customer loves, ...), Development (fast, efficient, agile, customer driven), Deployment (goto market strategy, ...). Do your 4D's right.

Anyway - if you don't know the Netscape story this is well worth a read. Slightly off topic.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Lagoa seems to be boldly (or brashly) taking on everyone.

They started as a (CPU based) cloud based 3D raytracer - taking on Autodesk, Bunkspeed, RTT, Keyshot, NVIDIA, etc, but now seem to be moving to becoming a cloud based CAD product - taking on SolidWorks and all the big CAD products. It's gutsy, it's bold, it's a big ask.

It's also a good reminder to the current providers to hurry up and get into the cloud. Installing software sucks. Being limited by your platform or device should be a thing of the past.

Never a dull day in the world of 3D and CAD.

Awesome read. I love seeing such letters/articles released 4 years on. Perfect Sequoia investment. Also a great example of a long form business plan (rare these days). It's clear and to the point. No/little explicit marketing BS, written in "plain English", it's not trying to be more complicated than it is. It's intent is to explain the business from top to bottom to a person who knows nothings about it. It covers all the key points including what their assumptions are (and what they dont know).

Inside Daimler Mercedes and their CAD system switch | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Large automotive OEMs don't switch CAD software.  It's just too expensive to change.  That's why it was such a big deal when Daimler AG - Mercedes chose to make this dramatic move in late 2010. The company announced that it would replace Dassault Systèmes CATIA with its toughest competitor, Siemens PLM's NX.

This is a good overview on Daimler's journey so far in regards to switching CAD systems.

I've been following this since the first day it was announced. I still struggle to believe it will actually be done successfully. It's one thing to change the next model to a new CAD package (hard enough) but to change over all data - huge.

As Facebook buys Oculus and Sony reveals its own VR device, Dezeen investigates what the resurgence of this old school technology means for designers.

Oculus VR was already big before Facebook bought the virtual reality headset maker for $2 billion. "Oculus has the potential to be the most social platform ever," said Mark Zuckerberg in a call to Facebook's investors, while his announcement post painted a picture of the world donning headsets to watch tennis, study in classrooms and consult with doctors.

Facebook sees Oculus Rift as a chance to profoundly transform communication, and to the gaming industry it's a generational leap in electronic entertainment. But there's more to virtual reality. It's as much a creative tool for designers and architects, as it is a new medium for designers to explore, and a close and personal way of experiencing the creations of others...
