App Indexing & The New Frontier of SEO: Apple Search + iOS App Indexing

App Indexing & The New Frontier of SEO: Apple Search + iOS App Indexing | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

In the first of her 3-part series on app indexing, contributor Emily Grossman discusses what Apple's new search API means for search engine optimization (SEO) professionals looking to surface deep app content for iOS users.

Positive Ranking Factors
  • App Installation Status. Is the app is installed on the device? (installed apps seem to get preference)
  • Personalized App Engagement. Does the individual engage with the screen in the app? This is based on time spent with result that Apple determines from session analytics.
  • App Result Click-Through Rate. Do users frequently click through the search result vs. picking another result or searching again?
  • Keywords/ Title. Do keywords from the “keywords” and “title” designations in the app markup match up with the user’s query?
  • Aggregated Engagement. How many users engage with the app screen?
  • Structured Data on Web. Is structured data correctly implemented?
  • Canonical App IDs. Is the same screen associated with one unique ID or URL across multiple indexing methods (NSUserActivity, CoreSpotlight, and Web Markup)?
  • Strength/Popularity of Web URL. How popular is the website associated with the app deep links? (Presumably, this is based on Applebot’s crawl.)
Negative Ranking Factors
  • Low Engagement. Do very few users engage with the app screen? (engagement determined by session analytics)
  • Over-Indexing. Does the app have many screens in the index with low or no engagement?
  • Returns. Do users return to search results right after looking at the app?
  • Keywords Spamming. Are developers stuffing too many irrelevant keywords into the keyword field?
  • Interstitials. Is something covering the content in the app or preventing users from accessing it?
  • Javascript (web only). Is Javascript preventing Applebot from crawling your site to find new app deep links?
  • Low Star Ratings, Low Review Volume, Poor Reviews. Apple has not explicitly called these negative ranking factors for Apple Search, but they are negative ranking factors for the App Store, so we expect Apple to treat them similarly here.
Jed Fisher's insight:

In the web we are used to SEO but in the Apps world there is far less information available on how the mysterious Apple/iOS Search Ranking works. This is an awesome detailed article on how your Apps can be found by Apple search (and how Apple ranks it).

In my experience many developers will spend months building their app but then spend 10 minutes putting down the search terms for the app.

It's not simple by any means but it's well worth some time and energy to:

a) figure out the right terms and keywords

b) implement the SEO and search support correctly

Do it right and your app stands a MUCH better chance of being found.

In coming weeks ill share more information on how i've seen people get their apps into the top 10s, what they do right and what they watch out for.

Bunkspeed becomes SOLIDWORKS | Visualize

Bunkspeed becomes SOLIDWORKS | Visualize | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Bunkspeed 3D software, modeling and animation software for advertising, automotive design, photography, architecture and industrial design.

Is now becoming SOLIDWORKS | Visualize.

Find out more at:

www.bunksepeed.com/content/documents/publicfaq.pdf

Jed Fisher's insight:

So we've been working with Bunkspeed now for many years helping with their developments. It's a product that is incredibly well loved and we've been fortunate to be part of Bunkspeed's journey from a small company, to being acquired by RTT, to now being integrated and part of the SOLIDWORKS brand. Personally i think this is a great fit for SOLIDWORKS, the most used MCAD product, it's gives Solidworks users a super easy option to make super high quality photos (renderings) of their work. It fits a need, and it's a great fit for that need.

Sure, I'm a little sad to see the name go but the new name is clearer for Solidworks users. It's really nice to see Bunkspeed getting a great home and a clear strong future.

See the new video on the Bunkspeed website or the FAQ for more info.

Disney invests $65m in virtual reality start-up company: Is VR the future of cinema? | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Cinema hasn’t changed drastically since the advent of colour pictures in the 1930’s. Sure, digital has taken over, 3D has been implemented and the wide screen made mainstream, but the actual experience has yet to be transformed completely.

Epic’s Tim Sweeney: Augmented reality will replace traditional screens

Epic’s Tim Sweeney: Augmented reality will replace traditional screens | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Sweeney said he saw virtual reality as just the first step to a single, unified augmented reality platform that could replace our screen-filled digital world—if given "a full decade to play out."

"If we had this AR display, the deep thing to realize is this: Once you have an augmented reality display, you don’t need any other form of display," Sweeney said. "Your smart phone does not need a screen. You don’t need a tablet. You don’t need a TV. You just take the screen with you on your glasses wherever you go."
Jed Fisher's insight:

Wish this interview was longer. Some very insightful views on AR and VR from legendary programmer Tim Sweeney (who is up there with Carmack - Sweeney created the original game Unreal and then the Unreal engine).

I love the above quote and thinking. Also very interesting to hear his views on Magic Leap where he says "(they) showed him features he had previously thought were impossible".

Scary Smart - High Quality Content With A Purpose

Scary Smart - High Quality Content With A Purpose | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Inbound marketing, a term coined by Hubspot with credit attributed to the company’s co-founder and CEO Brian Halligan, is essential to keep in mind when following modern best business practices. It’s also an increasingly important tool to use in today’s business landscape and technology driven climate when it comes to designing websites and campaigns.

Basically, inbound content marketing, a combination of “inbound marketing” and “content marketing” — it’s a relationship where you can’t have quality inbound marketing without quality content. The strength of content marketing is only as good as its content. And strong content should be a main focus to achieve effective inbound marketing, which heavily relies on using quality content to more naturally attract people to your company, its website, and fundamentally its products/services.

Jed Fisher's insight:

I started my career as a software engineer and now shamefully recall early on in my career having little respect for marketing. Silly me.

Little did i know that marketing is in many ways very similar to engineering. It should never be thought of as just hoping and "seeing what works". Marketing is all about measuring, measuring, measuring. It's about being as scientific and analytical as we can be to target and bring potential customers through the sales pipeline.

This is a great overview article and if you are not working like this today - you should be. Contact me for a hand - jed (at) 4Dpipeline (dot)com

Satoru Iwata, who brought the Wii and Nintendo DS to the gaming world, has died.

“On my business card, I am a corporate president,” he said in 2005 at a keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference. “In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.”

Jed Fisher's insight:

RIP Satoru Iwata, leader of one of my favorite companies.

Satoru Iwata brought Wii and Nintendo DS to the gaming world.

I was lucky enough to hear him speak in 2005 at the GDC, it put a big smile on my face seeing his passion.

Nintendo

- Made millions of kids happy with great family games (Chose not to make or allow violent (rated M+ games) - they made their business on "wholesome fun" - no Grand Theft Auto, no Wolfenstein, no blood, no sex, just good ole fun games and great characters).

- Made games that girls and mums and dads played (look at Wii).

- Broke new ground repeatedly in hardware - (consoles, gloves, dance mats, handheld consoles, Wii), in design, in game characters.

- Was often the underdog - survived and often beat Sega, Sony, Commodore, Atari, Microsoft, and many others;

- Transitioned from Board games to Computer games, started in 1949.

A nice company that treated it's customers right and made games that people love, with a great leader.

The 4 Essential UX Documents Every Designer Needs - Designmodo

The 4 Essential UX Documents Every Designer Needs - Designmodo | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

When it comes to UX documentation, wireframes and prototypes are certainly among the most important.

But that’s just the beginning. We’ve actually found four other documents to be extremely practical for everyday design.

Jed Fisher's insight:

#Design

Good article, these things are not talked about enough. We very often create these documents as part of our process but much of this comes even before Design - as part of #Define - i.e. with good product management and strategy - understanding your target customer, the value you bring, and how to reach them.

Creating this - not only helps figure out your business model but it also then helps your design, development, and even deployment.

With companies like Microsoft, HTC, Samsung,
Sony, Facebook, Nvidia, AMD, and Valve all

consumers through retailers and online. HTC will

account for $30 billion in business by 2020.

2015 seems to be the year AR (and VR) has gone off in terms of huge funding (half a billion to Magic Leap, Metaio AR acquired by Apple, 13th Lab acquired by Oculus,  Microsoft Hololens, ....).

That said, all of these companies still have the challenge of getting hardware out to the masses.

When i read that Nintendo this i got really excited. Here is a company that really "get's it" with shipping low cost hardware to the masses and engaging with wide stream consumers (vs hardcore gamers).

It's specific - pokemon but could you pick a better franchise.

Long time readers know I'm biased (i love Nintendo) but i actually think this has a reasonable shot.

"Help me Obiwan" A Convincing 3D Hologram That Doesn't Require Glasses | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Viewing 3D content without glasses or goggles has proved to be one of the toughest things for interface designers to achieve—it never really looks right. At this year’s SIGGRAPH, a group of researchers presented a display that creates a 3D human in stunning detail using a cluster of 216 projectors.

It’s so realistic, the tech is being used to create full-scale “digital humans” which could be used in a museum or educational context. Speech recognition helps cue up answers to questions so it feels interactive even if it’s not. And because the humans are so realistic, you feel like the person is actually making eye contact with you and listening closely as you’re talking to them.

Jed Fisher's insight:

This was probably my favorite "new thing" at SIGGRAPH this year. As per the article - very realistic, very 3D, very real, very personal. I'd love to see them take them take the same thing and do it on a mini scale (for our own personal holograms) - "help me Obiwan - you are my only hope"
