Here's what we look for in cloud software startups

High search volume, virality, and an economic moat are just some of the factors that help Point Nine Capital's investors decide if a cloud-software startup is worth funding.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Nice article by Christoph Janz at PNC.

I would like to argue that almost any business (cloud or not) should have "virality". Virality is one of these overused words which does not mean much, Christoph does a nice job of explaining two forms - sharing and publishing.

Another one is the economic moat, find a way to have lockin, ideally for the right reasons (vs sabotaging the user so that they are forced to you product).

Good read.

A Brilliant In-Car Touchscreen Interface You Never Need To Look At

Touchscreen displays in our cars aren't going away anytime soon. So designer Matthaeus Krenn figured that now was as good a time as any to radically improve their interfaces, replacing grids of ugly buttons and options with an elegant and minimal multi-touch UI ---that the driver doesn't need to look at.
Jed Fisher's insight:

#design

We've moved to touchscreen but have started going backwards - creating button intensive complex interfaces. Gestures are our friends! Here is a lovely example of re-imagining car touchscreens.

The difficult art of a good brainstorm

The difficult art of a good brainstorm | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

How can companies best come up with the good ideas needed to ensure their smooth running and further expansion? ...

Real creative thinking may better (and more realistically) emerge from quiet contemplation of a problem.

Jed Fisher's insight:

#off-topic

Many people ask me how the 4D Pipeline team works so well when often we generally quite distributed. There are many answers but in short - we try to replicate perhaps a similar setup to those gentlemen in the above photo.

On each project, we work closely (and personally) as an empowered cross functional team - we do daily scrums, we have a kanban board, we use timesheets and dev diaries, most importantly, we listen, learn, brainstorm, think, repeat, and iterate on designs and solutions that customers love.

I've found that for effective brainstorming (and problem solving in general) it helps to focus first on the problem or the pain/need we are trying to solve, understand this before jumping to the solution/how.  It may sound obvious but too often people get ahead of themselves.

Having a cross functional team available with great communication and a common understanding of the problem helps greatly, this to me is more important that any location or physical setup.

The Future of UI and the Dream of the ‘90s — UX/UI human interfaces

The Future of UI and the Dream of the ‘90s — UX/UI human interfaces | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

This visual concept was seemingly fully formed towards the end of the 90s. Design aesthetics became systems of mathematically arranged lines, geometric shapes, numbers and cold colour palettes. All interfaces were stripped of humanistic elements aside from the occasional AI human face.

In this dream from the 90's, we hoped for a world where every computer knows us personally. We would wake up to them, have them around us all day, and they would be the last thing we interact with before we go to sleep. They would predict our needs and wants and all interfaces would feel as natural as having a conversation with a friend. Technology would become our primary means (or only means) of communication and we would form relationships with these objects that take care of us.

In other words, we’re expected to translate our emotions through emotionless interfaces.

Jed Fisher's insight:

#Design

Really interesting read. Talks about the big comparison of the Minority Report UI's we dreamed about in the 90s "emotionless interfaces" to the App UX experience we have now (incredibly

emotional).

I especially liked these two thoughts:

"In other words, we’re expected to translate our emotions through emotionless interfaces".

and "The pursuit of delight is in the details".

Some fantastic details throughout the article. Hat's off to the author. Compelling read. Reminds me a lot of the great book by Alain De Botton, Architecture Of Happiness.

Design is not only about efficiency, it's about delight, it's personal, and it's about a pleasurable experience.

Time To Wake Up And Smell The Cloud. IT's Losing Battle Against Cloud Adoption

Time To Wake Up And Smell The Cloud. IT's Losing Battle Against Cloud Adoption | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

As cloud adoption continues to accelerate, IT is the last to know.

Open source pioneer Billy Marshall once quipped that "the CIO is the last to know," because she was too far removed from what open-source code her IT team was downloading or which SaaS services they were accessing. Now this phrase may apply to entire IT organizations, with major lines of business tuning into the cloud and tuning out IT prescriptions.

Of course, this has been happening for years. What's striking is just how pervasive the shift away from IT has become.

Jed Fisher's insight:

We're funny humans beings, all of us throughout our lives mix between embracing change and then fighting change.

#Cloud is still one of these topics where almost everyone has a black or white opinion - it's either the near booming future/now or enterprises are not going to be ready (for a while).

I'm one of the folks in the former camp. To build a new App today and to not build it from day one with the cloud in mind (or deployed) seems like a great way to be outdated from day one. Sure it's good to have a non cloud option but to not have a cloud option - ouch.

Cloud let's your App get tested and tried out as people can just "have a go". As this article points out it often helps you get bask the IT "security guard" (or as Dilbert calls them - "the preventer of information").

To begin a new business is easier than ever before. Your business can run more efficiently, be setup quicker, and be collaborative and transparent from day one.

Time to wake up and smell the Cloud!

Ex-Ideo Designers Rethink The Calendar For Mobile Devices

Ex-Ideo Designers Rethink The Calendar For Mobile Devices | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
With a minimal interface and gestural interactions Peek is meant to be just enough of a calendar for casual use.
Jed Fisher's insight:

#Design.

I love examples like this. Rethink the everyday tool.

The calendar - perhaps after email the most important everyday tool. Great example of a fresh redesign.

Some really nice concepts, rivers, slides, peeks, using the light sensor. I'd like to see it work with a few less taps/clicks - i.e. even one tap for something like the hourly calendar is one tap too many, perhaps automatic expanding, I'd love to see the accelerometer used so that it could be operated with one had (without having to tap) (for common tasks).

REALLY wish Apple would allow App developers (their best ally) to be "native" and have capabilities like the Apple apps have (eg changing Calendar icon).

Anyway, nice - they've got my $1.99.

Allows people to do new things, and do things better. To me - this is particularly exciting for workplaces, find/connecting with your colleagues.

I'm curious to see what @Hover is thinking about - they claim "smart sensors for the workplace", this is what iBeacon gives you so im curious to what their envisaged workflows are.

What VR could, should and almost certainly will be within two years - Michael Abrash

Jed Fisher's insight:

Great find. Today and in 20 years when people look back at the early years of programming (and in particular 3D graphics/games) there will be a handful of names that stand out, John Carmack, Michael Abrash, are probably two the greatest of our age. When they speak, it's worth listening.

VR - "Virtual Reality" aka pup on a headset and see/interact in 3D has been one of the holy grails for a long time. Abrash thinks it's really truly almost ready for prime time and that it will be "here" sooner than most people think.

He talks about the "magic" of VR and the VR presence.

Worth a read.

VR for a mixed-reality experience.  It goes way beyond gaming to larger industries like the trillion dollar AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry.  And moving beyond collaborative and immersive design to immersing both professionals and consumers in digital fabrication data (for design and manufacturing).    This isn't just the future, it's already here, and being developed now.

Apple's CarPlay: What You Need to Know

Apple's CarPlay: What You Need to Know | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

Apple finally took the wraps off its in-car software platform, CarPlay on Monday. Now that that we've had some time to take a look at its particulars, it's time to delve into exactly what this new mobile environment means for the drivers and automakers alike.

iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing, in a statement. "CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction."

Jed Fisher's insight:

This is a good look at what Apple's CarPlay system is and how it may stack up against the competition.

It's also a good article to follow the Internet Of Everything link.

I'm very interested in this. There are a ton of solutions that really fit well for an in-car experience. The key for the App developers is to make compelling Apps that make sense and work well from within the car.

It seems to me that this is a very small but safe step for Apple. It allows for some basic Apple iOS integration and probably "holds the fort" until they are able/ready to be more disruptive.

Ford's Open Sync and open developer approach is enticing a lot of people.

Regardless, to whoever "wins", I love that this will result in Apps that let me better engage, use, and understand my particular vehicle, it's location, and what can be done with it. I personally, cannot wait until we go beyond Music/Maps/Voice-control - there is so, so much more.

Sound in design - the 4 ways sound affects us

Playing sound effects both pleasant and awful, Julian Treasure shows how sound affects us in four significant ways. Listen carefully for a shocking fact about noisy open-plan offices.
Jed Fisher's insight:

#design

I'm working a Product Configurator where we are looking to use sounds as part of the design (rev'ing engine), I recognized quite quickly that this could be a powerful emotive highlight of the product experience or also viewed as a terrible annoyance.

Thankfully I stumbled across this brilliant TED talk (from way back in 2009). Absolute much watch for anyone interested in design.

Julian talks about how sound can effect us and change our behaviors (positively and negatively). He talks about designing for sound, and “Brand in Sound” (very enlightening).

Made me increasingly conscious of the sounds around me:

a) I call a customer in Hawaii, and each week i hear these lovely tropical birds when I'm on the call with him. They really truly relax me and my behavior on the call changes because of them

b) i use an App called Coffitivity - "increase your creativity!" try it http://coffitivity.com/ ; (it really works!)

c) I'm the proud father of two 4 month year old twins and as any parent will know - the sound of a baby (let alone two) crying is one of the most stressful sounds on the planet!

Are you hearing me? I’m Jed and I’m sounding out!

Sound should be a part of the "emotional design". Some years ago the company I was working for was involved in a project related to textures. One of the partners provided functional MRI from subjects while watching different textured surfaces or while touching different textures and materials. Then combining images and touched textures.<br>You could try this with sounds also
Jed Fisher's comment, February 17, 3:59 AM
Fantastic idea, great way to "visualize" another dimension. Rather than blend yellow to red you could use change a sound pitch/tone. Reminds me of the classic "beep beep" of a boat radar.
