Siemens acquires LMS - PLM continues to expand

Siemens acquires LMS - PLM continues to expand | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Dassault, Autodesk, Siemens, PTC all keep fighting to win PLM.
Siemens acquire LMS, LMS have a ton of testing and Mechatronic Simulation software.
· 2006 Dassault buys Dynasim
· 2007 LMS buys IMAGINE
· 2010 Cybernet buys MapleSoft
· 2010 LMS buys Emmeskay
· 2011Wolfram buys Mathcore
· 2012 Siemens buys LMS

Here is a good insight by Chad Jackson:
http://storify.com/chadkjackson/siemens-plm-to-acquire-lms-international#publicize

My expectation is that Imagine.Lab applications will be standalone offerings, while Virtual.Lab and SamTech applications will likely be rolled into NX. I also expect the test offerings to continue to be standalone offerings.

There is also a good link to an interview with Siemens PLM President Chuck Grindstaff on the acquisiton.

3D PDF viewing (finally) goes mobile

3D PDF viewing (finally) goes mobile | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Great news, 3D PDF is finally available on the mobile.

Bad news is that Acrobat is not (yet?) supporting it. Tech Soft 3D has instead come through with the goods.

Good article, well worth the read. Interestingly it was actually my team (while I was VP Engineering at Right Hemisphere) who developed the 3D PDF functionality for Adobe. Since then the technology was sold to Tech Soft 3D who have since been maintaining and building on it.

Right Hemisphere in the meantime has been purchased by SAP and is now powering their Visual Enterprise. They have some excellent products that are well worth a review.

Real customer pain and the need for real PLM Innovation

Real customer pain and the need for real PLM Innovation | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

As always, another top notch article from @olegshilovitsky

The level of information complexity at Boeing is impressing – 1B (Billion) parts to manage during the release of aircraft, Boeing has 12000 aircrafts in service and operation, Boeing employees are sending 63M (Million) emails during the month. Boeing engineers need to use multiple tools during their working day.

The usability of PLM tools is going down, which confirms the fact PLM is struggling from complexity and user experience.

PLM needs to be simpler. PLM needs to be useable. PLM needs reimagining.

4D Pipeline Blog - Autodesk 123D, Define+Design+Develop lead to Deploy success.

4D Pipeline Blog - Autodesk 123D, Define+Design+Develop lead to Deploy success. | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

For those of you who know me, you know that I am equally a fan of the business plan and product launch stages (Define and Deploy) as I am of the Design and Develop stages. A great product, a great business, gets all of these stages right.

Now I'm not saying Autodesk 123D is necessarily the greatest product but they are one of the first products in the exciting 3D/CAD space that has done well with what could be defined as their Define, Design, Develop and now Deploy stages. They've made a well-received consumer/pro-consumer product that they've launched on multiple platforms, including iPad, and have managed to gain a lot of press/PR for this release by building on iPad + Consumer + 3D printing + ease of use. So much so that, for example, the very popular Gizmodo recently featured an article about this product:
http://gizmodo.com/5959929/123d-design-create-incredible-3d-printed-designs-on-your-ipad

This is great marketing for Autodesk and a reminder to the entire 3D/CAD/AEC industry.

What's my conclusion?

I think there is a vast opportunity to improve upon 123D but nevertheless what this clearly shows us is that a product's deployment success begins in the Define and Design stage. By choosing the right platform (or the wrong platform) you enable or limit your end products' reach. Ultimately knowing who your customers are (and will be) is the best bet for deciding your platform.

I think the rest of the 3D/CAD/AEC industry can learn from 123D and do even better. Again, 123D is a good reminder that by focusing on mobile, on consumer, and on ease-of-use there is the potential for a game changing effect and great marketing to be had. If this is done right, this then translates into customers and ultimately leads to revenue.

The consumer mobile revolution is well underway. 3D/CAD/AEC, it's now or never.

Innovation: Who Else Is Doing It?

Everyone applauds innovation. At least, they love it in retrospect, after it has worked. Before that, it's just somebody's wild idea that competes with every other wild idea for resources and support.

A business model poem

I particularly like this "poem"

An idea is not a design
A design is not a prototype
A prototype is not a program
A program is not a product
A product is not a business
A business is not profits
Profits are not an exit
And an exit is not happiness.
