Gartner Hype cycle

Gartner Hype cycle | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

A hype cycle is a graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and social application of specific technologies.

A hype cycle in Gartner's interpretation comprises five phases:

"Technology Trigger" "Peak of Inflated Expectations""Trough of Disillusionment" "Slope of Enlightenment" "Plateau of Productivity"

Visualization Lab | Illustrating How Mechanical Assemblies Work | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

How things work visualizations use a variety of visual techniques to depict the operation of complex mechanical assemblies. We present an automated approach for generating such visualizations. Starting with a 3D CAD model of an assembly, we first infer the motions of individual parts and the interactions between parts based on their geometry and a few user specified constraints. We then ...

Jed Fisher's insight:

Design | Develop topic.

This is very similar to the work my team at Right Hemisphere did (now part of SAP). Right Hemisphere was/is great at automatically making very high quality precise Training and Support Documents (for manufacturers). This requires not only tremendous rendering techniques to draw 3D models as technical line illustrations but also requires IQ to figure out what parts are what (screws, gears, significant parts, shells, connectors, etc) and what their purpose is.

This technology can then be used to automatically make support documents like the classical IKEA Product Instructional's and can even be used for more complex products like an automotive engines. It can also be used for automatic assembly and disassembly instructions.

Great research article, found in this month's Siggraph magazine. Thanks for JasonC @BinaryAgentX for the link

Absolutely, you really get to see how much work goes into such technical illustrations, it's not as simple as "line drawing", there is a great deal to "explain a story in a glance".

Forrester survey shows that the future is now when it comes to use of personal computing for work
Jed Fisher's insight:

Powerful and compelling analytics by Forrester.

Some of the key findings:

- Technology has found that employees believe so much in the post-PC devices that they're willing to pay for them themselves to use at work -

- Gartner predicts Macs will be as accepted by IT as Windows PCs by 2015.

- Use of multiple devices is already common.

- More people choose or bring their own PCs than you'd think.

- The number of people accessing the Internet through PCs in the USA will shrink from 240 million in 2012 to 225 million in 2016. Tablets are using used at roughly the same levels (from 39% to 49%) everywhere – at a work desk, home, cafe and traveling. Use of multiple devices is coming (29% already use 3 or more devices). PC rules, but mobile is getting bigger

- Tablets will be a big proportion of computing devices in use.

- Cloud storage and data syncing is commonplace.

- IT must plan on sourcing technology from Apple and the Google Android ecosystem.

- Microsoft's role as an IT provider is its to lose.

Our challenge is to enhance the value of intelligent models. How can owners, designers, and builders make better decisions earlier and throughout the lifecycle? How can they refine decisions over time as unanticipated requirements emerge?

Jed Fisher's insight:

After a huge prelaunch and a tremendous amount of attention from the AEC industry, M-Six VEO is now officially live.

They plan to revolutionize the AEC (+O Owners) industry with their platform that has been in stealth mode now for I believe a few years.

Website looks great, and I'm downloading the trial right now.

Very interested to see if lives up to the hype.

The AEC/BIM software industry is so exciting right now, we've got big ole Autodesk going mobile/cloud with 360, we've got great groups like Gehry buying up and building their online BIM 3D platform, we've got fresh approaches coming in from bim+ (www.bimplus.net); add to all this we've online viewers from Sketchfab and GrabCAD, content libraries from BIM Object, Sketchup being eaten by Trimble, Rhino, GRAPHISOFT and Vectorworks continuing to do good things, beautiful collaborative renderings from Bloom Unit, and so much more. It's fantastic.

Anyway, Check out M-SIX VEO and let me know your thoughts.

Qualcomm’s visionary CEO, Paul Jacobs, wanted to use internal Qualcomm ideas to find breakthrough innovation that could be turned into products, (not simply a suggestion box for creative thoughts or improving sustaining innovation.)  His only request was that we keep two of the original program’s goals:

1. The program had to remain fully open to employees from all divisions.
2. The ideas were to be implemented by existing business or R&D units – i.e., no need to create new permanent infrastructures for innovation.

And he added a third goal that would ensure his greater involvement and support going forward.

3. The program had to have an efficient mechanism to bubble-up the best ideas (and their champions) to the timely attention of the top executive team.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Another excellent article by Steve Blank. He gives a great overview on how a "big company" can have a fast and efficient boot camp process to develop breakthrough products and new business opportunities.

Such a nice way of explaining the key BIM concepts, nice job @shoegnome.

Not sure I 100% agree with the degrees of Integration, Design, Construction, FM, yes, but Augmented Reality is a technology not a vertical. I would instead have put here Owners. Owners and even downstream consumers of the building are to me one of the final frontiers for making BIM really really useful (AR is just a (good) technology to help it be useful to these people).

9 More Reasons to Invest in Inbound Marketing

9 More Reasons to Invest in Inbound Marketing | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

What is Inbound Marketing?

Inbound marketing (wikipedia) is a term that can mean different things to different people. At HubSpot, we've created the inbound marketing methodology, which is what inbound marketing means to us. For the last year or two, I've explained it in 5 steps.

Attract trafficConvert visitors into leadsConvert leads into salesRetain, upsell and cross-sell to existing customers.Analyze each activity for continuous improvement.

And here's the current official explanation of the inbound marketing methodology:

Jed Fisher's insight:

I hear the terms guerrilla marketing and social marketing a lot. Very few people are specific with what this is and how it works.

It's taken me a long time to "get it" and I'm still learning a lot on this area. Hubspot not only make a great platform for helping Inbound Marketing but  they also practice what they preach and do a damn fine job at it.

If you followed this article from start to finish you will almost certainly improve the profitability of your business.

Marketing can often seem like witchcraft, it shouldnt be like this. What I love about the principles outlined in this article is that they are based on solid facts and evidence based information

1. Inbound Marketing is *Predictable*.

2. Inbound Marketing is *Trackable*.

3. Inbound Marketing Efforts Can Be *Directly* Attributed to Revenue.

4. Inbound Marketing Only Requires Small Bets that Can Each Generate Big Returns.

5. Inbound Marketing Creates the Foundation for Generating a *Measurable* ROI from Advertising.

6. Inbound Marketing Creates Content That Will Have a Positive Impact on Your Business Long into the Future.

7. Inbound Marketing Attracts a *Global* Audience.

8. Inbound Marketing Analytics Enable Improvement Over Time.

9. Inbound Marketing Results are *Cumulative & Compounding*.

Finally, be sure to look at the newspaper diagram and the final diagram in this article.

IT/Software will never be the same again. 5 years ago we made software for the desktop. Now we think mobile and cloud first. So much so that I can almost not imagine starting a new piece of software for Microsoft Windows only.

Here is a  simple summary of how to seize the opportunity -
1. Data Anytime, Anywhere.

2. Pick A Tool, Any Tool.

3. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

4. Let Me In.

5. Be Social.

6. The Business Proposition.

7. I Can Do It Myself, Thank You.

Transforming ArcGIS into a Platform | Esri Insider | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Transforming ArcGIS into a Platform, One of the primary drivers of the ArcGIS as a platform initiative has been making GIS easier not only for new users but for advanced users, as well. In addition, the platform is open, extendable, and can be leveraged by others, facilitating both the integration of other geospatial technologies, as well as other enterprise IT and web services of many origins. Looking to the future, we see our platform strategy as being of great benefit and value to our users, partners, developers, and ultimately the world itself. It is already creating an ecosystem and community of GIS users who are leveraging each other’s resources and knowledge.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Interesting thoughts from ESRI founder Jack Dangermond.

Firstly this article gives an insight into the process of evolving a "Tool" to a cloud based "Platform" (a difficult feat in itself and something that many are pursuing in their own disciplines and fields).

Secondly, because again we are seeing the (potential) power of opening up a platform to "the masses" (aka downstream). That is, creating an open ecosystem and making complex useful data available in simpler forms for downstream users. In turn, some would argue that if you can get people hooked on your data then it will increase the need for more contact (demand and supply equation).

People talk about "Big Data" all the time however it's often overlooked that the data must come from somewhere. I love that we are seeing more and more disciplines open up. CAD, AEC, GIS, and Manufacturing all seem to be trending towards opening up their platforms and their resulting data which in turn allows us to (potentially) have an incredible, powerful and connected experience.
