Really interesting idea and product from The Mill. One that I have mixed feelings on.
On one side - they seem to have made a lovely product that helps fulfill a clear need - i.e. to make a commercial/film when the exact car is not yet available or decided upon. On the other hand, i can't help but feel this is in some ways a failure of Computer Graphics and simulation. 

I.e. The Mill has realized it's hard in some cases to work in a fully digital environment or to impose digital on recorded environment, so the BlackBird is the "glue" that let's them get real world physics and do a live take (recording) then easily add the virtual car in place. Still I feel it should be lower cost and faster to lay this all up in your DCC 3D tool of choice, apply real physics, and do this 100% digitally. That said, interestingly - for some at least this is not the preferred route.

It may be very arcane to most of us, but graphics startup Otoy has come up with a breakthrough that should help game developers create much more beautiful games that can run across different hardware platforms.

In a nutshell, Otoy reverse-engineered Nvidia’s general purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU) software, known as CUDA, to run on non-Nvidia hardware. That means that programs written in the CUDA language are no longer exclusive to Nvidia graphics chips. Now they can run on GPUs from Advanced Micro Devices, ARM, and Intel. That means a CUDA program written for the PC could run on a PlayStation 4 or an Apple iPad.

More papers, patents and PhDs have been written and awarded on raytracing than any other computer graphic technique.
Raytracing is a subset of the rendering market. The rendering market is a subset of software for larger markets, including media and entertainment (M&E), architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), computer-aided design (CAD), scientific, entertainment content creation and simulation-visualization. Not all users who have rendering capabilities in their products use it. At the same time there are products that have been developed solely as rendering tools and there are products that include 3D modeling, animation and rendering capabilities, and they may be used primarily for rendering, primarily for modeling or primarily for animation.

Amazon’s releasing their very own game engine. Lumberyard, as they call it, is based on Crytek’s famous CryEngine, and can be used to develop games for both PC and consoles. It’s also free to download, and comes with “no seat fees, subscription fees, or requirements to share revenue.”

When i started my career 3D and gaming were small niche markets - boy that changed! 3D is everywhere these days and gaming is booming, add to that VR and AR and the hundreds of use cases and industries that can be reimagined thanks to these technologies.

Amazon too is obviously seeing the potential.

They are now releasing their own game engine (competitor to Unity and Unreal) - it's based on the third player - Crytek of which they made a major deal with a few month ago to basically use Crytek as they want. Now their intention is clearer and they release Crytek as LUMBERYARD (with a logo of a penguin with a saw!?!)

Amazon may have licensed out the engine to use for their games, or, as some sources have suggested, they may be using it as a baseline to build their own proprietary gaming engine.

It's also worth highlighting the engine is completely free! 

In additional Amazon acquired Double Helix, the development studio behind 2013’s Killer Instinct.

My guess - expect to see more games on Kindles and my bet - Amazon releasing a VR headset or making a major partnership.

In a Google blog post today by Clay Bavor, Google's new VP of VR, the company detailed a few quick stats on the company's Cardboard program. This..

So recently Oculus announced their pricing of their Rift VR headset, ~$600USD which is fairly steep, plus additionally you need a highend modern desktop computer to run it. 

Add to this we've seen the Google Glass business close but also recently restart with an "Enterprise" focus. 

What does this mean and why do I share this with a post about ~5 million Google Cardboard VR Viewers? Well to me it's showing that Price is and is going to continue to be a major factor in consumer adoption.

Cardboard's success shows that people are indeed interested and curious about VR, they want to try it and for ~$25 bucks you get a nicely made pair of VR goggles (albeit made of cardboard) that you use to experience VR (and there have been 25 Million downloads of VR apps from Google Play store alone!).

However until the price of Oculus/similar comes down it will be a while* before a large market share of general consumers have high end VR headsets.  (while* is comparative - is it 6m out or 24+ months out?).

What the current prices points do allow is for some great enterprise experiences, be in retail, construction, architecture, events/tradeshows, etc. Corporations can afford the hardware and can create VR experiences to help show of or sell their products. In additonal they can give away a large number of low cost Cardboards to promote their VR product experience.

I'm surprised we are not seeing more VR gaming cafes popping up - maybe this will also occur (again! (flashback to 1990s)).

Anyway - VR continues to boom!!

Nemetschek says that it has concluded its acquisition of all of the shares of Solibri. You may remember from December that Solibri makes software used in BIM model quality assurance and quality control.

My take - very smart move by Nemetschek. Solibri has some excellent software and is often seen as the standard for IFC and model checking in the AEC industry.

(Firstly - thanks to Oleg Shilovitsky for another fine article)

So Onshape is finally out of beta and live!

Quick recap - Onshape, founded mostly by the former Solidworks founders, raised a truckload of money ($144M in 4 rounds) to basically put CAD in the browser (vs traditional big package install). Reasons - for all the benefits of cloud, eg collaboration, access anywhere from any device, cloud computing, … 

To me this is not a revolution, instead it’s more of an evolution. At 4D Pipeline we’ve helped build and take to market over a 100 new software products. Of these - there is only a small handful of “traditional” desktop installed products. My point is - if you are starting a new product you are almost certainly going to start it thinking about multiple devices/OSs, cloud, collaboration, etc. I.e. Cloud and having an App strategy is no longer revolutionary it’s table stakes. It makes sense, it’s needed, it’s awesome. So, i’m a little surprised that Onshape raised $144M; and that’s it’s taken so many years to release. That said, they have done many things right and seem to have had a nice delivery of their product to market.

Their usage metrics are so far more vanity metrics vs real metrics (eg most useful metric is 10000 users but this is not the same as 10000 regular users), however i am sure we will see these numbers grow. What is very impressive is their app store, they have come to market with some good partners - nice to see companies like SimScale there for cloud simulation.

To me their biggest challenge is less technical and instead more to do with the “lockin” of CAD. It’s hard (especially for the big companies) to change CAD systems. It’s a big change, it’s risky, and their invested in their current solution. i.e. dont break it if it’s not broke. That said, many would argue there are a lot of things that are “broken”.

Anyway - great to see a new CAD package on the block and in the cloud, it’s going to be interesting to see how Onshape grows and if (when?) it gets acquired (I’m tempted to start a betting pool!).

With the announcement of the Tango-enabled Lenovo PHAB2, Google has released three new videos showcasing its power.

I'm not a fan at all of such marketing videos but in this case these are good to explain what Tango can do.

At 4D Pipeline we've been working with similar devices now for some time. You'll see in my past blog entries i talk about how use such 3D sensors with Augmented Reality which together open up many *new* use cases in AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) and in product experiences and configurators. Finally using Tango we can get rid of the distracting AR Markers and now do things like placing a car up on stage and augmenting it or mapping the real world around us and then interact with it. There are loads of use cases we've not even thought about yet. Watch these three videos to get inspired and then talk to me about some specifics for your business.

The branding is an umbrella which encompasses specially designed phones, headsets, and applications which work together to create a high quality mobile VR experience on Android, one that we suspect will rival Samsung’s bar-setting Gear VR.

Another significant step towards VR.

Vive still is the clear leader in this very competitive space but Google wants a piece of the pie which it will try to get with it's happy sounding "daydream" announcement. 

Increasingly for consumers mixed devices seem to be winning the VR space race (aka phones that can be used for VR). As much as Occulus and others (Magic Leap?) would like consumers to fork out $3K+ for a top end computer that supports VR (or Mixed Reality), it's a big ask. Phones we already have. 

Let's see what happens next week in the VR space race!

It’s great to now see some of best people in the business looking to address one of the next steps of VR, i.e. the need to manipulate our world in VR. In this link we see Tim Sweeney show off their Epics/Unreal’s approach. Another example I recently saw is the Meta Vision guys https://www.metavision.com/

As always - use cases is key. I’m looking forward to seeing more example of social “multiplayer” VR world manipulations.

This could be very significant. All these great AR/VR/mixed reality devices become significantly more useful when they know your exact location. As an example, knowing this and having a 3D plan of your building enable you to overlay this as 3D map data.

Wow, this is incredible.

I really think we will see this point now in under ~20 years.

 

When I explained to my friends kids that this was a huge win because it was a neural learning program and the same engine could become say the worlds best lawyer or anything else. I said in 20 years time they might be telling us what to do. One of them, Kim got the idea - she said "they will be telling us to eat our own poo!" :-)

 

The Go human player does indeed look a bit shellshocked. Its so hard to play a machine that never gives up, never gets distracted and always makes its best move. And he has all of humanity on his shoulders and the machine doesn't care a damn.

That said, he might learn something from it to improve his game. Chess players improved their endgames from the PC progs.

 

Anyway - truely incredible feat. Go having many more choices than Chess was seen as a massive challenge for a NN based computer (or any type).

Nice job by Microsoft to show off the capabilities of Hololens. I'm always blogging about all the new applications of VR/AR and this is such a great example.

I especially like not just the great use cases shown here but the fact that they've kept it "social", after all watching your favorite game is a social experience.

What's amazing is that this is totally doable *today*.

Project Tango is a Google platform for giving phones and tablets a sense of space, and it's going to radically change how people use their mobile devices.

Tango is coming, Tango is coming, Tango is almost here!!

Tango is the single most exciting technology i've seen in the last few years. I was blown away when i heard google was working on it (Apple also have their version of it), similarly Intel has the related RealSense.

In short, Tango is a depth sensor on the phone. This is going to improve computer visions 100x as we can now detect shapes and depth better (and quite precisely). For AEC, Manufacturing, medical, and more this is huge. Imagine - scanning a room, identifying key objects, then being to say render Augmented Reality. The benefit here to AR is we have a MUCH better understanding to our environment, we know where the tables are, doors are, walls are, we can also augment the objects we detect. Huge possibilities are opened because of this. Very very excited to be working on some Tango projects and to see this tech going live.
