What is Inbound Marketing?

Inbound marketing (wikipedia) is a term that can mean different things to different people. At HubSpot, we've created the inbound marketing methodology, which is what inbound marketing means to us. For the last year or two, I've explained it in 5 steps.

I hear the terms guerrilla marketing and social marketing a lot. Very few people are specific with what this is and how it works.

It's taken me a long time to "get it" and I'm still learning a lot on this area. Hubspot not only make a great platform for helping Inbound Marketing but  they also practice what they preach and do a damn fine job at it. 

If you followed this article from start to finish you will almost certainly improve the profitability of your business. 

Marketing can often seem like witchcraft, it shouldnt be like this. What I love about the principles outlined in this article is that they are based on solid facts and evidence based information

Great catch from Jed Fisher at 4D Pipeline. In bound marketing is how you atttract people to your site and how you convert them to customers, subscribers etc. Its a process orientd flow and is best done when measured. Sweeney said he saw virtual reality as just the first step to a single, unified augmented reality platform that could replace our screen-filled digital world—if given "a full decade to play out."

"If we had this AR display, the deep thing to realize is this: Once you have an augmented reality display, you don’t need any other form of display," Sweeney said. "Your smart phone does not need a screen. You don’t need a tablet. You don’t need a TV. You just take the screen with you on your glasses wherever you go."

Wish this interview was longer. Some very insightful views on AR and VR from legendary programmer Tim Sweeney (who is up there with Carmack - Sweeney created the original game Unreal and then the Unreal engine). 

I love the above quote and thinking. Also very interesting to hear his views on Magic Leap where he says "(they) showed him features he had previously thought were impossible". 

The future is augmented!

Inbound marketing, a term coined by Hubspot with credit attributed to the company’s co-founder and CEO Brian Halligan, is essential to keep in mind when following modern best business practices. It’s also an increasingly important tool to use in today’s business landscape and technology driven climate when it comes to designing websites and campaigns.

Basically, inbound content marketing, a combination of “inbound marketing” and “content marketing” — it’s a relationship where you can’t have quality inbound marketing without quality content. The strength of content marketing is only as good as its content. And strong content should be a main focus to achieve effective inbound marketing, which heavily relies on using quality content to more naturally attract people to your company, its website, and fundamentally its products/services.

I started my career as a software engineer and now shamefully recall early on in my career having little respect for marketing. Silly me. 

Little did i know that marketing is in many ways very similar to engineering. It should never be thought of as just hoping and "seeing what works". Marketing is all about measuring, measuring, measuring. It's about being as scientific and analytical as we can be to target and bring potential customers through the sales pipeline.

Satoru Iwata, who brought the Wii and Nintendo DS to the gaming world, has died.

“On my business card, I am a corporate president,” he said in 2005 at a keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference. “In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.”

RIP Satoru Iwata, leader of one of my favorite companies.

Satoru Iwata brought Wii and Nintendo DS to the gaming world.

I was lucky enough to hear him speak in 2005 at the GDC, it put a big smile on my face seeing his passion.

Nintendo

- Made millions of kids happy with great family games (Chose not to make or allow violent (rated M+ games) - they made their business on "wholesome fun" - no Grand Theft Auto, no Wolfenstein, no blood, no sex, just good ole fun games and great characters).

- Made games that girls and mums and dads played (look at Wii).

- Broke new ground repeatedly in hardware - (consoles, gloves, dance mats, handheld consoles, Wii), in design, in game characters.

- Was often the underdog - survived and often beat Sega, Sony, Commodore, Atari, Microsoft, and many others;

- Transitioned from Board games to Computer games, started in 1949.

A nice company that treated it's customers right and made games that people love, with a great leader.

Good article, these things are not talked about enough. We very often create these documents as part of our process but much of this comes even before Design - as part of #Define - i.e. with good product management and strategy - understanding your target customer, the value you bring, and how to reach them. 

Creating this - not only helps figure out your business model but it also then helps your design, development, and even deployment.

As the last day of #E32015 approaches, it's clear that the video game industry's biggest players have poured much of their imaginations into virtual and augmented reality. From #Sony's#ProjectMorpheus shown here, to#Microsoft's #HoloLens and the Oculus Rift, the future of gaming is evidently out of hand.

Apple earlier this month completed an acquisition of Metaio, a German augmented reality firm that first started life as a side project at Volkswagen, for an as-yet-unknown project.

Major news! which i didnt see coming!

Apple buys Munich based Metaio. Congrats to Thomas Alt and the team!


For Metaio - great outcome - i think they would have struggled to get into core products from Google, Microsoft and Facebook.

For Apple - less sure -  but it makes sense and the big four now all have plays in VR and AR.
At 4D Pipeline we've been long time users of the Metaio SDK and other major AR SDKs.

A holographic heads-up display ships later this year

Rather than throwing little left-turn arrows up in your field of vision, Navion projects holographic arrows that follow the road in front of you and then onto the road where you need to turn left. There’s no need to look at the navigation screen in the center console to figure out if the robot voice who pronounces everything wrong is telling you to take this left coming up right now or the next one. Navion will just run those green arrows along the correct path right in front of your eyeballs. No headset required.

Jed Fisher's insight:

This sounds pretty amazing, really curious to how well it works. They are in my backyard so ill have to visit and check it out myself.

I must admit i'm very skeptical of the marketing. I am sure they are using a heads up display. However they:
  • strongly imply the arrows are projected onto the actual road 
  • use mockups which show the green arrows totally matting out the environment, whereas it should simply look brighter but with background still visible through the green. Would be quite hard to see anything on a bright sunny day, and also means they couldn't give a toss about a realistic visualization of their tech.
The concept is basically sound at an abstract level, but with major hurdles which is really hard to solve:
  • In order to overlay accurately the box needs to know its position to within a few cm, and also needs to be able to track the terrain as well. So they are talking about a system hundreds of times more accurate than standard GPS.
  • The thing will need to be calibrated to the position and slope of the windshield+ driver's head position in every car
  • If it works by simple reflection (how all HUDs in cars work today) then the size of the device directly relates to the field of view. A small device means you only get a tiny patch of display area which simply won't fill enough of the driver's FOV to align with real world objects
  • If if doesn't work by reflection, and really can present overlays over a large FOV, then the ONLY other option is that a special coating must be added to the windscreen with reflects projected light from the device, basically a translucent projector screen. This seems problematic since other light (sunlight, streetlights etc) is very likely to interact with such a coating, affecting safety/visibility.
Interestingly there is one way I can see of creating full FOV display that only the driver can see, but it would involve a special coating AND the driver wearing the projector device on their head. See here (CastAR) for this tech (which is really legit, because of the coating the light only bounces straight back at the user, so no one else sees what they're seeing).
Apart from the display tech, there is of course the tracking and telemetry challenge. Google's self-driving cars do this using multiple HD cameras + expensive LIDAR scanners + carefully prepared databases of every detail of the limited roads they drive on. These guys imply it's just a little device that you stick on the dashboard.
I'm skeptical but hope to meet them to learn more!

Pricing can make such a difference to your business. I'd go so far to say 8 out 10 companies that i speak with have big holes in their pricing (or packaging) which can be fairly easily improved upon and which results in serious $$$ improvements to their business.

•Price on Value
•Align pricing to what customer wants to achieve
•Different types of customers will pay different prices
•It’s always easier to drop the price than to raise the price
•free is not the same as trial
•people will pay for what is value and special to them

·      Google’s “Cardboard” VR app is nearing 5 million downloads.

·      Google has acquired two VR firmsThrive Audio and the studio behind “Tilt Brush,” adding to its VR portfolio.

·      Chipmaker AMD is taking its first big leap into VR by launching LiquidVR and calls VR the most compelling platform ever.

·      Advisory firm Digi-Capital forecasts the VR/AR market could generate a whopping $150 billion in revenue by the year 2020, with much of the VR-related revenue coming from gaming and 3D films.

Viewing 3D content without glasses or goggles has proved to be one of the toughest things for interface designers to achieve—it never really looks right. At this year’s SIGGRAPH, a group of researchers presented a display that creates a 3D human in stunning detail using a cluster of 216 projectors.

It’s so realistic, the tech is being used to create full-scale “digital humans” which could be used in a museum or educational context. Speech recognition helps cue up answers to questions so it feels interactive even if it’s not. And because the humans are so realistic, you feel like the person is actually making eye contact with you and listening closely as you’re talking to them.

This was probably my favorite "new thing" at SIGGRAPH this year. As per the article - very realistic, very 3D, very real, very personal. I'd love to see them take them take the same thing and do it on a mini scale (for our own personal holograms) - "help me Obiwan - you are my only hope"

A little off topic but long time readers will know i'm a fan of the 360 video cameras. This is a great example of them.
Can't wait till everyone has a 360 camera - will totally change photography - imagine family events and parties in 360 recordings and or 360 Go Pro's (race to the first company to do this!).

Then we need some nice software smarts to focus on key people and track activities in 360 degrees.

Great link from E3 (thanks Robert @ Motus). It's such a OMG powerful moment to see 3D (Visualization) +  mixed (really well) with your environment (AR) + good UX ideas (Interactivity). It just comes together so nicely. Add multiplayer (social) and it's even better.
Hololens and MagicLeap, it's going to be exciting! 


Great quote today on twitter from  @BenedictEvans "Laughing at people wearing Oculus will be like laughing at people staring at a glowing box in the corner".

AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) is finally starting to get it! The world is no longer run by desktops, mobile is here, wearables are coming. VR, AR, this is the way we can interact, understand, and explain our environment.

Trimble is looking ahead, together with their mix of digital design products like Sketchup and other CAD packages, with their wealth of construction products (including high precision location hardware), they are well placed to make use of HoloLens and similar VR/AR technology. 

Imagine walking around a construction project and being able to see where the foundation will be placed, where the piping will be, what the building will look like. Then - take a walk down the street and have x-ray vision to see the new fibre optic cables that have been laid underground. These sort of workflows are finally just about within grasp and it's technologies like HoloLens and other wearable VR hardware that is enabling them. Expect many exciting products and experience ahead!
