Transforming ArcGIS into a Platform | Esri Insider

Transforming ArcGIS into a Platform | Esri Insider | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

Transforming ArcGIS into a Platform, One of the primary drivers of the ArcGIS as a platform initiative has been making GIS easier not only for new users but for advanced users, as well. In addition, the platform is open, extendable, and can be leveraged by others, facilitating both the integration of other geospatial technologies, as well as other enterprise IT and web services of many origins. Looking to the future, we see our platform strategy as being of great benefit and value to our users, partners, developers, and ultimately the world itself. It is already creating an ecosystem and community of GIS users who are leveraging each other’s resources and knowledge.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Interesting thoughts from ESRI founder Jack Dangermond.

Firstly this article gives an insight into the process of evolving a "Tool" to a cloud based "Platform" (a difficult feat in itself and something that many are pursuing in their own disciplines and fields).

Secondly, because again we are seeing the (potential) power of opening up a platform to "the masses" (aka downstream). That is, creating an open ecosystem and making complex useful data available in simpler forms for downstream users. In turn, some would argue that if you can get people hooked on your data then it will increase the need for more contact (demand and supply equation).

People talk about "Big Data" all the time however it's often overlooked that the data must come from somewhere. I love that we are seeing more and more disciplines open up. CAD, AEC, GIS, and Manufacturing all seem to be trending towards opening up their platforms and their resulting data which in turn allows us to (potentially) have an incredible, powerful and connected experience.

The Power of 3D: Using BIM for Facility Management | Area Development Online

The Power of 3D: Using BIM for Facility Management | Area Development Online | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
Building owners and facility managers can reap the benefits of using building information modeling (BIM) long after construction is complete.
Jed Fisher's insight:

We live in buildings.

Our homes, workplaces, universities, museums, hospitals, etc.

Companies spend millions making their new building campuses and attracting talent to them (see Facebook, Apple, NVIDIA, ...)

In sci-fi's we see people using 3D maps all the time to pull up useful information but in 2013 we barely do this...

And the crazy thing is that we often have these 3D/BIM models from the building process, and if we simply used them downstream there is so much more we could do.

By having a 3D/BIM model in our pocket, on our mobile, we can see where our colleagues are (see WifiSlam), find where a room is, see which meeting rooms are free (and where they are), find faulty equipment, do inspections, navigation, visually see where team members are located, get help navigating a museum, hospital, or university campus, etc, etc.

I really am looking forward to seeing more great Apps which utilize 3D/BIM for downstream use, be it field management, facility management, or occupant interactions.

It's 2013 - let's live in the future!

Possibly the most succesful applicatiuon of mass customization. All mouths are different, all problems are different, never the same alignment, and less than 0.1mm accuracy (before adjustment) is needed.

Yet, Around 6.8 million units are currently being produced with these machines every year. Proof enough that the hardware and process have established themselves in dental technology. The CE-certified material EOS CobaltChrome SP2 (CE 0537) and the EOSINT M 270 system are used for the digital production of crowns and bridges. Both elements of the process chain come from EOS and satisfy the high quality standards for medical products. Carlos, I'm honored :-) Great information and yes, a fantastic use case for 3D Printing.
I never would have expected working with the "dental industry" but in recent times I've had some minor collaborations around interchanging 3D file formats and 3D visualization for exactly these sorts of reasons. i.e. complex information needs to be explained and 3D visualization is a great way of doing that.
Thanks again for the information and the dedication :-)

Solving the Multi-CAD Problem

Solving the Multi-CAD Problem | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
Over the years, there have been many attempts to reconcile these discrepancies so that you could more easily work with your supplier’s CAD data. Vendors have tried:Sell everyone the same software.Create a neutral file format that everyone can save to, open, and modify (think STEP and IGES).Offer individual translators for any popular formats that the customer anticipates using in the future.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Multi-CAD is a long way from ever being "solved". Traditionally CAD Vendors have done all that they can to lock companies into their world, and even when they've succumbed to moving to providing good interchange/neutral formats they've often done so in a proprietary way (think .JT, 3DXML, DWF, ...).

PTC at least seems to be finally be coming around to the idea that it makes sense for them to intelligently import CAD data from other packages, and then even better, support change management processes (eg. if it changes in the other CAD package, refresh it in your CAD package). Let me just say "Finally!" :-)

The truth is that essential no global manufacturer can solve multi-CAD, it's a fact of life. At some point one of your suppliers will be using a different CAD package, or someone will need it in a different format. So face this reality and find software and setups that support this.

BIM, augmented reality and collaboration

BIM, augmented reality and collaboration | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

The use of 3D models and handheld devices, coupled with augmented reality technology, has the potential to enable a site operator, engineer, or maintenance technician to better understand advanced modeling data. In addition, it will allow these personnel to work in a more direct and intuitive way than they would with written instructions or electronic manuals.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Too many products add AR as purely just a "feature" (what a waste)..

AR needs to enable something new, an improved use case or a new workflow. Know and understand your customer use cases. Ask the question, how can AR help?

This is a great example of using AR to show where temporary works (eg: site hoardings, barriers, etc) would be located in a train station.

Don't add a feature, solve a need instead. Well done COMIT + Fiatech + NetworkRail

BIM/CAD File Format Support in Architectural iOS Apps

BIM/CAD File Format Support in Architectural iOS Apps | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

The big four BIM players include Autodesk Revit, Bentley Microstation, Graphisoft ArchiCAD and Nemetschek Vectorworks Architect.

For CAD formats Autodesk DWG is an industry de facto standard. The less proprietary format DXF is also a universal standard for information exchange. Autodesk’s less popular DWF format also has iOS support among apps. Bentley’s approach to iOS apps is its i-model format. One needs the Bentley desktop applications to create i-models.

We have included some open-standard 3D CAD formats with robust market use and acceptance. These are quite common on the MCAD side but also have use in AEC in limited form. Within this group is listed the IFC 2×3 file format for BIM.

We are going to start with propriatary formats first and then review the most popular open formats below.

Jed Fisher's insight:

I've dealt with over 120 3D / 2D Vector formats in my time (the Right Hemisphere platform read about this many), you name it, I've had to deal with it. I know them all and hate them all ;-)

For the last 15+ years people have talked about one 3D file format to rule them all. It hasn't happened in MCAD, it hasn't happened in DCC/3D, and it's not going to happen in AEC CAD.

That said, it's good to be aware of the main formats, those that are open and those that are proprietary.

Whether you deal with DWG, DWF, DXF, SKP, IFC, OBJ, 3DM, i-models, or other; this article is useful to you. It's a good overview to the main format supported formats in architectural iOS Apps. It's also part of a good series on iPad Apps for architects

In case you had any doubt, the future of CAD is Mobile

In case you had any doubt, the future of CAD is Mobile | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

The answer lies in incorporating handheld devices, software, Bluetooth and wireless technology – to produce a CAD drawing in front of your eyes. The measurements taken by laser meter and sent via Bluetooth into the software installed on the handheld device, produce a pictorial representation almost instantly. Human error is completely eliminated – the surveyor can see immediately if he has taken the measurement incorrectly. The solution also needs to offer the basics for internal building design, down to such detail as furniture if required, thereby producing a finished drawing in the field that can be emailed back to the office.”

Admittedly the biggest challenge faced will be persuading all involved to undergo a complete culture change! From Gräbert’s experience this has been less of an issue in the USA, Australia and the Far East but across Europe those we see as potential adopters just don’t believe what can be achieved by implementing a mobile CAD solution until they actually see it in action, so uptake has been slower simply because it is harder to get through the door in the first place.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Just in case you had any doubt. Great article and interview with real-world examples of how CAD + Mobile can save weeks "This is a huge cost saving when we look at how quickly the drawing is produced – using the “point-shoot-done” principle within a week the surveyor can be measuring 400-500 square metres, make that 750-1000 square metres in 3-4 weeks and as much as 1500 square metres for super users!"

New algorithms are able to detect generic objects, such as people, cars, trucks, animals, and other common objects, with high accuracy. In this talk, we describe how a combination of optimizations on CUDA-enabled GPUs, and novel improvements in computer vision algorithms enabled us to accelerate object recognition by two orders of magnitude, enabling for the first time, real-time state-of-the-art object recognition of dozens of object types.

3D BIM for downstream users in field and facility management

3D BIM for downstream users in field and facility management | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

THE CONCEPT OF FIELD BIM
There are now increasing initiatives in the construction industry to ‘virtualise’ the access to BIM data, to move it away from a static office environment and to enable it to become relevant on-site. GPS and Wi-Fi enabled handheld Toughbooks and iPads are seen by some as the ideal interface to facilitate ‘field BIM’ and communicate building information bi-directionally between individual operators in the field and a central server. They allow crews on site (both during and after construction) to interrogate the physical building, referencing it to a virtual information model (or vice versa) that contains information about construction or O&M aspects.

Jed Fisher's insight:

If you've been reading my blog for a while you will see that one of the things I'm very excited about are the changes and opportunities in the BIM and AEC/O (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Owners) space.

With similarities to the manufacturing PLM space, the AEC BIM space is finally modernizing itself and starting to take advantage of all the tremendous advances in mobile, collaboration, cloud, access anywhere, etc.

It's awesome to see 3D Visual BIM data becoming more and more accessible to downstream people, i.e. not just Architect and Engineers but owners, facility managers, and building occupants.

This is a great article as it reminds us that there are still truckloads (pun) of opportunities in the construction and field BIM space. We've seen a few AEC ISV companies operating in this space namely Vela (bought up by Autodesk) and also Latista. However I am sure that in the coming months we'll see more. In particular, we'll see more easy to install Apps for the field (and FM) that work with existing BIM data (if you haven't already, take a look at the bim+ approach www.bimplus.net ).

Exciting times ahead in the for Owners and Consumers of BIM data and all those wanting to interact and access information from buildings and from the process of building buildings.

PLM and The Art Of Simplicity

PLM and The Art Of Simplicity | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
For many years, enterprise software was known as a place where development of new features was one of the main priorities. To have comprehensive list of features was considered as absolute necessity.
Jed Fisher's insight:

As always, another great article from Oleg.

I too am seeing the same thing. Finally even the "big" "slow" enterprise companies are demanding better software. Just because it's "made for enterprise" does not mean that it needs to be complicated. In fact, it's even more important that it works as simply as possible.

IT workers are demanding the simplicity and elegancy that they have come to expect in their consumer lives at work. We want software (Apps) that "just work", they should be easy and simple to use, they should not require training, we rightly so want the complex made simple. This is entirely fair and reasonable and is exactly what ISV in manufacturing and AEC need to be making.
