Joel On Software - thoughts on the new generation programmers.
Recently I've worked with another (contracting) development group and must say that I've been thoroughly unimpressed. I remember when I started out as a programmer the "oldschool" programmers at that time probably thought that I wasnt hardcore enough, perhaps thinking that I should have had to have learnt punch card assembly programming.
Now I tend to mostly agree with this article and think that the "new-school" programmers dont have enough grounding in the details of implementation but that said, I must remind myself that the new generation is not better or worse, simply adapted and grown by the current environment. It is fundamentally important for me and the other "oldschool" programmers to continue to learn and adapt and to mix the best of old with new.
Good food for thought this article. The cycle of life continues :-)
