Let's hope 2013 will be the year for Indoor location reporting! | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
In the race to bring indoor location technology to market, an eight-person startup is taking on big name players Google, Qualcomm and Samsung, and has the potential to win.
Jed Fisher's insight:

CSR’s Sirf Technologies division and WifiSLAM claim to have figured out how to map indoor locations when you’re walking with your mobile phone inside a building. I really hope that we get to see this work in practice (with good precision) in 2013.

Having the ability to get to less than a meter precision inside a building is a very powerful technology breakthrough that would enable many more workflows and usecases. Currently GPS/Wifi is not precice enough for many workflows (only getting to around 3 meters at best).

Breaking News - Frank Gehry's AEC Software Company Acquired by Trimble

Breaking News - Frank Gehry's AEC Software Company Acquired by Trimble | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
The merger will help streamline communication across the construction process, according to the companies.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Breaking News!
Wow - smart move by AEC company Trimble - and a good move IMHO by Gehry Technologies; I see this making a lot of sense for both companies. I also get to say "i called it" on this one (albeit 2 years ago and did think that Dassault was the more likely buyer).

Gehry has been doing a lot of good things with their own developments (Digital Project & cloud based GTeam) and their own acquisitions (like BIMshare). Trimble meanwhile has also been on a little bit of a rampage with some excellent acquisitions such as Sketchup (from Google).

Interestingly both Autodesk and Dassault Systèmes have invested heavily with Gehry over the years.

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) and BIM space is still very exciting; Autodesk, Nemetschek (esp. bim+), Bentley, and Trimble all doing some very interesting things. Of all these groups Trimble comes the most from the C/Construction space but now with it's purchases it's getting a very strong offering also in the A/Architecture.

Gehry Technology primarily sells their products through it's world-class building development consulting services. They a well known for building complex signature designs from architects like their founder Frank Gehry.

iOS 8: The Best (almost hidden) Feature for App Developers

iOS 8: The Best (almost hidden) Feature for App Developers | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
Of all the new features introduced in iOS 8 last week, app extensions are the ones that will have the biggest, most visible impact on the new operating system. The feature is most commonly described as a way for third-party applications to talk to each other, though that's an oversimplification—that's not the only thing app extensions can do, and technically third-party apps in iOS still can't talk directly to one another.
Jed Fisher's insight:

You've got an App or an Idea? Then a very important question to ask yourself is can my App benefit from better iOS integration. This is a huge feature for iOS8 and one which will allow your app to do more and open up better experiences for end users.

For example, make a custom keyboard, Today extension, share extension, Action translation, or cloud storage provider extension.

Baidu says its massive deep-learning system is nearly complete | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
Baidu says its 100-billion-neuron deep learning system will be complete within six months, powering a fast transition away from text as the dominant search input. Thanks to smartphones and its new Baidu Eye technology, the company expects voice and image search to dominate within five years.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Tech like Google Goggles (Goggles not glasses) have been around for a while and have been continually improving..

Ultimately this side of the tech needs to get hooked up to a Google Glasses / similar (or even your phone) and importantly - be able to track (so if you move your device around it will keep track of the object (this works to a degree for faces with cameras). It also needs to not kill the battery.

I suspect we will keep seeing a lot of activity in this space in coming months/years. Google typically has had the spotlight and this naturally fits spot on in their strategies (search, glasses, big data, dont require the user to have to think, etc) but it's also great to see Baidu and other big companies (NVIDIA and Intel i suspect) invest in this space.

BTW, if you happen to be working in this field - i'd love to talk with you as I've some ideas i'd love to roll around with you.

Startup Professionals Musings: How Do You Select A Revenue Model For Your Startup?

Startup Professionals Musings: How Do You Select A Revenue Model For Your Startup? | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

One of the toughest decisions for a startup is how to price their product or service. The alternatives range from giving it away for free, to pricing based on costs, to charging what the market will bear (premium pricing). The implications of the decision you make are huge, defining your brand image, your funding requirements, and your long-term business viability.

The revenue model you select is basically the implementation of your business strategy, and the key to attaining your financial objectives.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Good article. I speak to dozens of startups and still find that so often the weakest point of the business is the business model and/or revenue model. Technology doesnt sell itself, even a technology that solves a problem doesnt sell itself. Your business models and your route to market needs to be just as innovative as your solution (if not even more so!). The revenue model is a small piece of this but still - it helps to understand options which this article provides.

It's missing a few such as:

- Commerce - sell something to your users, keep some or all of the proceeds;
- Peer to Peer - connect people together in a network, take a small piece of the activity that ensues;
- Data - sell the data your service generates;
- Gaming - Gaming is not a revenue model, but can presents some unique opportunities for monetization.

- And of course there are various multisided platform pricing structures to be aware of.

One more thing, just to be explicit - a revenue model is NOT a business model :-)

One must align everything with your customers needs/wants, not just the product/tech but the business model, goto market strategy, channel, and even the revenue model. The better aligned, the more likely to work.

Why Ikea's Mostly Computer Generated Catalog Will Soon Be the Norm

Why Ikea's Mostly Computer Generated Catalog Will Soon Be the Norm | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
The rooms in Ikea's catalogs may look like wonderlands of inexpensive furniture, but they're mostly computer generated. Like, 75 percent computer generated. The Swedish juggernaut has experimented with CG product shots for almost a decade now, and it's getting incredibly good at it. But it's far from the only company doing it.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Excellent article introducing virtual marketing (digital production). In my experience working with product manufacturers (automotive, apparel, consumer product, industrial design, etc) it's become very rare to see real products photographed. Everything is virtual these days, allowing for more product skus, faster development, and lower cost production. Add to this - mass customization and consumer choice digital is the only way to go.

Products like Iray, Vray, and other renderers and visualization packages (3DXcite, Bunkspeed, Autodesk) are helping enable this.

Never been a better time to be in 3D!

Developing Next-Generation Apps for the Apple Watch

Developing Next-Generation Apps for the Apple Watch | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
The word is out! The new Apple Watch is coming your way in early 2015, providing a brand new platform and great opportunities for a new category of apps. In this post I'll cover some of the basic features available for app developers so you can begin thinking about how these features can be put to use in your own custom apps.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Here at 4D Pipeline we are preparing to begin our first Apple Watch App. The key as with any new device is to focus on "New (improved) Ways of Interfacing with Users (or as they are sometimes called - people :-))".

The GPS apps are obviously a great example, riding your bike and one buzz for turn left, two buzzs for turn right.

I'm personally looking forward to all the fun gamifications ideas we can do with this. Secret notifications and communications for example, let's go back to Morse code! dot dot dot, dash dash dash, dot dot dot (or in Watch terms - short buzz, short buzz, short buzz, long buzz, long buzz, long buzz,  short buzz, short buzz, short buzz!) :-)

I can't wait for meetings to be like "close your laptops, turn off your phone, take off your watch!" ;-)

I look forward to exploring more great ideas with you!jed (at) 4Dpipeline (dot) com

Jed Fisher's insight:

Expect to see a lot more of this type of technology, advanced image processing, 3D, "big data", and deep neural nets to identify faces, reactions, movement, speech, and more.

How many years will it be until "computers" can drive better than the best drivers? till they can do reliable on the fly language translate? And until they can finally converse like a human?

All of these things are hard with identify emotions probably as difficult as any of them. From almost day 1 human babies start identifying faces, we are incredible at reading the smallest subtleties in emotions including deception (be them purposeful or subconscious).

Still, I am sure that all of the above will be solved in the coming 2-15 years, once computers can do all of these things - cool and "scary" things will happen - computers starting to "know" more than humans. Add self learning and finally we can retire ourselves ;-)

THE BEACONS FAQ: It's Time To Set The Story Straight About Beacons And Apple's iBeacon System

THE BEACONS FAQ: It's Time To Set The Story Straight About Beacons And Apple's iBeacon System | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it
Beacons are becoming the most rapidly adopted in-store technology since mobile card readers.
Jed Fisher's insight:

At 4D Pipeline we are increasingly doing more with iBeacons. This is a nice summary on what they are and what they can and cannot do. Like many things they have the potential to annoy/spam but if used intelligently by retailers (and others) they will be incredibly helpful to consumers.

iBeacon lets iPhones and iPads constantly scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. When it identifies a Bluetooth device, like a beacon, it can wake up an app on someone's phone — even if the app is not running. Developers can make their apps responsive to iBeacon by using Apple's Core Location APIs (application programming interfaces) in iOS.

Interactive 360° 3D Display

Interactive 360° 3D Display | 4D Pipeline - Visualizing reality, trends and breaking news in 3D, CAD, and mobile. | Scoop.it

USC ICT describes a set of rendering techniques for an auto-stereoscopic light field display able to present interactive 3D graphics to multiple simultaneous viewers 360 degrees around the display. The display consists of a high-speed video projector, a spinning mirror covered by a holographic diffuser, and FPGA circuitry to decode specially rendered DVI video signals.

The display uses a standard programmable graphics card to render over 5,000 images per second of interactive 3D graphics, projecting 360-degree views with 1.25 degree separation up to 20 updates per second. The team describes the system's projection geometry and its calibration process, and we present a multiple-center-of-projection rendering technique for creating perspective-correct images from arbitrary viewpoints around the display.

The projection technique allows correct vertical perspective and parallax to be rendered for any height and distance when these parameters are known, and the developers demonstrate this effect with interactive raster graphics using a tracking system to measure the viewer's height and distance. They further apply our projection technique to the display of photographed light fields with accurate horizontal and vertical parallax. They conclude with a discussion of the display's visual accommodation performance and discuss techniques for displaying color imagery.
