Now you can test drive a Lexus RC F with the Oculus Rift

Now you can test drive a Lexus RC F with the Oculus Rift | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Lexus has built a virtual reality RC F using the car's actual steering column, foot pedals and an Oculus Rift DK2 headset. It calls the setup the Lexus RC F Rift, naturally, and it'll be at select auto shows across the nation for the next several months. The player can race the car around a virtual track. At the very least, it's a novel way to get a feel for the car's interior, and a good look at how companies outside of the gaming industry may use virtual reality technology in the future.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Interesting article to follow the Unity/Oculus partnership also the earlier blog entry showing Ford's VR center. Excellent example of how a tool like Unity/Oculus can benefit a company like Lexus.

Havok’s Free 3D Engine For Mobile Game Developers Is Now Available

Havok’s Free 3D Engine For Mobile Game Developers Is Now Available | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Games built with Project Anarchy can be published without any sort of licensing fees on iOS. A new 3D engine from Havok (the same people that built the engine behind some of the world’s biggest games, from Assassin’s Creed to Halo 4) that would be completely free to mobile game developers.

Jed Fisher's insight:

I remember when 3D physics engines first came out (~15+ years ago now), launched at one of the Game Developers conferences. There was Oxford Dynamics Math Engine and the Havok engine (and that was it). My team at the time was working on our little physics engine (specially for car games) and it was good but in truth I didnt have a clue on how to sell or bring this to market.

I remember everyone saying that there would never be a real need for such a dedicated engine, let alone hardware support for such things.

Wow, times have changed. Since then many have come and gone (Renderware was another big player). Havok still remains and is now owned by Intel.

Today physics engines would be written with NVIDIA CUDA and be GPU accelerated, Havok remains CPU accelerated due to their long lasting Intel connection. Intel holds on tightly to it as an example to the usefulness of a CPU.

It was a nice blast from the past to see Havok again. Havok has since moved beyond just physics and now releases their 3D game engine "for free" for iOS (and thus they are competiting with Unity 3D).

Unity - Unite 2013 - Keynote | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Jed Fisher's insight:

Another nice keynote by David Helgason and the Unity team. The number of games being made with Unity continue to expand. Very impressive stats on their viewer distribution. And some nice new features coming including 2D UI/game support.
