Google aims to speed up 3D workflows with cloud rendering

One of the biggest bottlenecks in 3D and VFX work is rendering. Well now Google is getting involved, launching a cloud solution called Zync. Google's new cloud platform Zync aims to cut rendering bottlenecks and leave more time for creativity. Kicking things off with RenderMan support later this year.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Zync was reasonably well received as an independent service before their acquisition by Google. Very interesting to see Google getting into this service and competing with a mix of providers.

Nemetschek acquires (MEP solution provider) DDS

Jed Fisher's insight:

Safe but good acquistion by Nemetschek. Makes sense for them. Data Design Systems DDS is well used in Europe especially. This acquistion will add to their growing BIM solutions.

Autodesk keeps buying them up, Tinkercad has found a new home

Autodesk keeps buying them up, Tinkercad has found a new home | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
I am happy to announce that we have just signed a deal where Autodesk will purchase the Tinkercad site and core technologies. This is a great day for all Tinkercad users, Autodesk is a very enthusi...
Jed Fisher's insight:

Late March Tinkercad sent out an announcement that were shutting down operations.

I, like many others, expressed sadness that this was the end of TinkerCAD. Tinkercad like a handful of other 3D startups brought fresh ideas and new hope to the CAD industry (even if they hadn't quite figured out their business model).

March 27th - @4Dpipeline - RIP Tinkercad, the only 3D modeling environment with a non-atrocious UI.

Well, that said, they are back from the dead. Autodesk spotted the opportunity and made them an offer to find a new home with the growing list of acquisitions at Autodesk HQ. I'm not sure now what the future will hold for them now. I suspect Autodesk might fit this into their 123D offering. Regardless, I'm glad to see the Tinkercad guys have a happier conclusion (end? beginning?).

The 3D/CAD App space continues to excite! It's never a dull day.

"the only 3D modeling environment with a non-atrocious UI" I put forward that you're not a Modo user, then.

Ok, perhaps it's a little bit of an overstatement :-) and yes Modo is nice. I probably should have specified CAD - but even for that there are some nice-ish UIs :)

Lagoa Sold to Autodesk for $60 Million

Lagoa Sold to Autodesk for $60 Million | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Montreal-based digital rendering, cloud-based 3D design platform Lagoa has been reportedly acquired by Autodesk for over $60 million. In mid
Jed Fisher's insight:

I guess this is a smart move by Autodesk although I'm not sure on the valuation. Will be interesting to see what they do with it (or if they will just shelf/merge it). I wonder what will happen to existing Lagoa customers as i can't beleive their pricing or even product offering will stay the same.
Also I guess this is another "loss" to Siemens who was a Series A investor in Lagoa. They also lost out on RTT which sold to Dassault (now 3DXCITE)).

3D Visualization is booming - product need to be experienced digitally and 3D is the way to make this happen.

You might say that, aside from the whole 3D printing thing, 3D Systems is in the acquisition game.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Very interesting, did not expect this. I had seen Teamplatform, i liked it actually but i didnt think it had much traction. I guess technically it fitted well. Probably a good move on both sides.

Reminds me of Gehry Technologies acquistion of BIMshare earlier this year.

Breaking news - Autodesk Acquires PI-VR

Breaking news - Autodesk Acquires PI-VR | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

"January 8th, 2013. Autodesk Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), has completed the acquisition of PI-VR, a privately held German software company that specializes in sophisticated realtime visualization technology"

Jed Fisher's insight:

Autodesk continues its acquisition spree, with the latest acquisition of PI-VR  (visualization solutions in automotive and manufacturing).

This is after Autodesk as already acquired similar companies in the past like Opticore, and another German visualization company Numenus.de.

It's also an interesting acquisition as this software will once again compete with Autodesk Showcase.

This leaves Automotive companies now have one less competing visualization solution provider (good and bad). It's now Autodesk, Autodesk, Autodesk, or RTT, Bunkspeed, or a few others.

I suspect, RTT and Bunkspeed, will continue to innovate and set the pace for Autodesk to follow.

More analysis to come.
