The 3 Biggest Mistakes Entrepreneurs Should Avoid On The Road To 1 Billion Views from the CEO of Prezi

There was no reason to believe that this company could take on the likes of Microsoft, Google, and Apple, but we chose to make the leap anyway. Today, the 60 million people using Prezi have helped to create the world’s largest database of presentations—and their prezis have been viewed more than 1 billion times. I’m still incredulous when I think back to that afternoon in the café.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Peter Arvai CEO and Co-Founder at Prezi shares 3 excellent insights.

I cannot stress how important these 3 are - very often overlooked and not captured well in typical startups articles.

I'd say (1) is probably the most frequent case i see - 90% of startups try to do farrrrr too much - you need to focus.

(2) always seems like you are doing the right thing but with this excellent article you see why it's not just analytics! it's *understanding*.

(3) UX is king.

Disclosure: Prezi is a customer of 4D Pipeline but that has no bearing on this post.

An MVP is not a Cheaper Product, It’s about Smart Learning | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
A minimum viable product (MVP) is not always a smaller/cheaper version of your final product. Defining the goal for a MVP can save you tons of time, money and grief. Drones over the Heartland I ran...
Jed Fisher's insight:

As always, awesome Steve Blank. I wish I could add some further insight but alas Steve has nailed it.

This is a common lesson/process we do with our customers - prove the business first.

Pricing - 5 key learnings from analyzing top B2B SaaS pricing pages

Pricing - 5 key learnings from analyzing top B2B SaaS pricing pages | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
We’ve spent time analysing the SaaS pricing pages of the hottest B2B products to provide you some key insights into what makes them great at winning signups
Jed Fisher's insight:

Pricing can make such a difference to your business. I'd go so far to say 8 out 10 companies that i speak with have big holes in their pricing (or packaging) which can be fairly easily improved upon and which results in serious $$$ improvements to their business.

•It’s very easy to underprice your product
•Don’t price on Cost
•Price on Value
•Align pricing to what customer wants to achieve
•Different types of customers will pay different prices
•It’s always easier to drop the price than to raise the price
•free is not the same as trial
•people will pay for what is value and special to them

Here's a New Way to Look at Competitors

Here's a New Way to Look at Competitors | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Every startup I see invariably puts up a competitive analysis slide that plots performance on a X/Y graph with their company in the top right. The slide is a holdover from when existing companies
Jed Fisher's insight:

I always feel like I've made a small step toward PM enlightenment when I get Steve Blank validation on the methods I employ.

Competition review really requires honesty and empathy.

Don't do yourself injustice by holding fast to your strengths and discounting the competition. Look closely at them, understand their SWOT, strategies, and focus points. Lay it out clearly and keep these graphs updated. It is only by doing this can you really systematically do better.

Steve Blank is the guru and master strategist of Product Management. Sun Tzu said the same thing a long time ago (with his often misquoted quote)

"So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.

If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself".
