Otoy breakthrough lets game developers run the best graphics software across platforms

Otoy breakthrough lets game developers run the best graphics software across platforms | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
It may be very arcane to most of us, but graphics startup Otoy has come up with a breakthrough that should help game developers create much more beautiful games that can run across different hardware platforms.

In a nutshell, Otoy reverse-engineered Nvidia’s general purpose graphics processing unit (GPGPU) software, known as CUDA, to run on non-Nvidia hardware. That means that programs written in the CUDA language are no longer exclusive to Nvidia graphics chips. Now they can run on GPUs from Advanced Micro Devices, ARM, and Intel. That means a CUDA program written for the PC could run on a PlayStation 4 or an Apple iPad.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Wow, this is pretty major. Very interesting.

Motorcity Europe with NVIDIA Quadro Picks Up the Pace & Power for Automotive Design | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Motorcity Europe in Cologne Germany provides vehicle styling and design services to the automotive industry, including major OEM clients down to smaller specialist brands. At the head of the company is automotive designer David Hilton, former chief designer for the Ford Motor Company and head of exterior design for Bentley Motors in the UK. David and the Motorcity team help develop the looks and style of diverse types of vehicles, from familiar commercial models like the Ford Focus RS and Ford SMAX, to the Infiniti E-Merge and Mazda Superlite supercars, to vehicle concepts.

Jed Fisher's insight:

I'm a big fan of David Hiltons work, he has designed some of the most iconic Bentley's and Fords. His presentation at this years NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference was in my view perhaps the best of the show - it was an insightful view into the the art and love of automotive design. If you get a chance to hear him speak i highly recommend it.

(Note full disclosure: NVIDIA is a client of 4D Pipeline)

NAS Modeling and Visualization Through the Years

NAS Modeling and Visualization Through the Years | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Timeline of the 30-year evolution in modeling and simulation, performed on supercomputers operated by the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division at NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley—from the first Cray system in 1983 to NASA's flagship supercomputer, Pleiades, today. As systems and codes have improved, scientists and engineers have been able to produce increasingly accurate, detailed simulations for U.S. aerospace and science research projects ranging from the fluid dynamics within fuel injectors for aircraft, to massive computer models of Earth's ocean and atmosphere.

Nvidia and Stanford are designing next generation virtual reality

Nvidia and Stanford are designing next generation virtual reality | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Essentially, these early light field stereoscope prototypes use two displays with two layers of LCD panels separated by 5 millimeters. The headsets send each eye an entire 4D light field of images so that each eye can naturally disseminate focus between objects that are nearby and further away. The prototypes also feature head tracking, and users can see their hands within the virtual worlds.

Jed Fisher's insight:

This is pretty awesome, glad someone is looking at the eye focusing challenge. Nvidia and Stanford University are developing the next generation of virtual reality headsets that could be consumer products by 2018. VR -  $30 billion by 2020, wow.

SpaceX - The Future of Design

"SpaceX is exploring methods for engineers to accelerate their workflow by designing more directly in 3D. We are integrating breakthroughs in sensor and visualization technologies to view and modify designs more naturally and efficiently than we could using purely 2D tools. We are just beginning, but eventually hope to build the fastest route between the idea of a rocket and the reality of the factory floor. Special thanks to Leap Motion, Siemens and Oculus VR, as well as NVIDIA, Projection Design, Provision, and to everyone enabling and challenging the world to interact with technology in exciting new ways."

Google Makes 3 Big Bets on NVIDIA

Google Makes 3 Big Bets on NVIDIA | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Google has placed bets on Nvidia to fight its main rivals—Apple, Microsoft and Facebook by theStreet.com

Conclusion No. 1: I draw the conclusion that Google is working very closely with Nvidia for a new set of mobile computers—smartphones and tablets—with dramatically higher computer power, to be announced starting in late 2014. These smartphones and tablets would be more powerful than almost all of today's PCs.

Conclusion No. 2: It was clear that the Nvidia Shield is now Google's big play for the gaming market—at least for this year. It is a big part of Google's plan to make Microsoft's Xbox ... simply irrelevant.

Conclusion No. 3: Google's innovative use of GPUs in cloud photo processing could lead to higher demand for Nvidia's GPU cloud servers.

Jed Fisher's insight:

Bold article, well thought out strategical analysis by Anton Wahlman. I love reading such a fresh viewpoint.

I would even add further to the authors big conclusions.

I would add that Google Glass and it's vision (hehe - pun) of AR and visual search for the masses requires:

4) Great computer vision - everything should be searchable, and everything happens to be in 3D.  - Cloud computing with Nvidia GPUs is not an option it's a must. E.g. See a car you like, look at it, see everything about it.  Also applicable for Google Goggles.

5) Great visualization/rendering - the Augmented part of AR requires state of the art 3D visualization. This means overlaying 3D information on the "reality". Tegra's are going to again be musts but again, we are going to rely on the heavy lifting being done in the cloud with GPUs.

Disclosure - NVIDIA is a customer of 4D Pipeline's.
