Distributed Design Is No Longer A Dream: Why CAD Must Evolve To Support It

Distributed Design Is No Longer A Dream: Why CAD Must Evolve To Support It | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Companies used to have design and manufacturing under one roof. But today’s teams are spread across the globe– and traditional CAD wasn’t built for distributed design.
Jed Fisher's insight:

Looks like Onshape is starting off their blog. For those of you who dont know Onshape, it's a very "stealth" company that was funded by the original founders of Solidworks and others. They raised a sh!t load of money and have been working away now for a few years (too long). From the little public information that has been shared, I think their basic premise is - collaborative CAD.

Good idea obviously but i feel they are now coming too late to the party. Collaborative CAD is an easy technical problem to solve (thanks WebGL), the hard part is changing conservative slow moving manufacturers to use a new CAD system, let alone changing their PLM. Good luck with that! Boeing uses Catia and i'd put money down that they dont change from Catia for the next 25 years!

Autodesk and GrabCAD partnership extends CAD’s reach in the cloud

Autodesk and GrabCAD partnership extends CAD’s reach in the cloud | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, 3D, Mobile, and CAD. | Scoop.it
Both AutoCAD 360 and the new Fusion 360 3D modeler will be available for real-time drawing and editing of drawings and models inside the GrabCAD Workbench environment.
Jed Fisher's insight:

If you are still saying the "cloud" won't happen, it's really about time to stop :-) Cloud is coming, it's here, it's happened!

GrabCAD currently has about 700,000 members; they will top the million mark very quickly thanks to this new partnership.

While this is very big news for GrabCAD I must admit I'm more than slightly disappointed they've gone the Autodesk only way. Despite what Autodesk marketing might say there is more to 3D/CAD/AEC than just Autodesk products.

Lagoa going from simple rendering to Parasolids cloud-based MCAD

by Roopinder Tara, Tenlinks.com Who or what is Lagoa? And what makes a relative newcomer think they can go up against a reigning champion? CAD Insider readers know of Lagoa for its cloud-based renderer and a user part library/gallery. It...
Jed Fisher's insight:

Lagoa seems to be boldly (or brashly) taking on everyone.

They started as a (CPU based) cloud based 3D raytracer - taking on Autodesk, Bunkspeed, RTT, Keyshot, NVIDIA, etc, but now seem to be moving to becoming a cloud based CAD product - taking on SolidWorks and all the big CAD products. It's gutsy, it's bold, it's a big ask.

It's also a good reminder to the current providers to hurry up and get into the cloud. Installing software sucks. Being limited by your platform or device should be a thing of the past.

Never a dull day in the world of 3D and CAD.
