Apple reportedly buys Kinect tech-creator PrimeSense

Apple has reportedly acquired PrimeSense, the company behind the Xbox Kinect's 3D-sensor technology, for $345 million, according to a new report.
Jed Fisher's insight:

That said, Primesense seems to be denying the acquisition rumor, so it's not 100% sure if the deal is real or just a rumor (again).

PrimeSense, is the company behind the Xbox Kinect's 3D-sensor technology.

Microsoft recently went with different tech for Xbox One but Apple can still use this technology, in fact they need some options here. This makes a good move for acquiring such expertise and ability.

This gives Apple the ability to z-depth measure which would fit nicely with Apple TV (allowing us to control the TV without remotes but also interact and play games with gestures).

Future iterations might (will likely) make it into laptops and even mobiles. It would be incredibly useful for mobile shape detection, Augmented Reality, mobile mapping (point clouds), and of course Gesture recognition.

Mobile Augmented Reality for Building Maintenance using BIM 3D data

Jed Fisher's insight:

Very nice end demo showing what can be done by overlaying a BIM model with your building "reality".

This example seems to use computer vision (point clouds, 3D reconstruction, 6DOF feature based tracking) and then combines this with best location information (WLAN and HAIP locaitoning).

The result looks great. Very good example of the end goal. You can imagine the usefulness of such technology - for construction, architecture, facility management, consumer interaction, ...

Now if only we can make it work on a standard iPad! (which happens to be one of the things we are working on at 4D Pipeline  :-))

The software giant demonstrates three different means of capturing a fully three-dimensional scan: a simple smartphone app, the depth-sensing Kinect sensor and a more elaborate camera array.
