Google's BIM-busting App for Design and Construction

Google's BIM-busting App for Design and Construction | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

Remember the “Google[x] to revolutionize the construction industry” headlines from this time last year?

Google technology could halve construction costs

Google’s secret development unit has developed a technology that could earn the company $120 billion a year, and,

Is Google planning a BIM-busting app for construction?

Google_X

Google’s secret is secret no more...

Jed Fisher's insight:

I'm glad to finally see what this was all about. I have to say while I'm pleased people are seeing the need and the opportunity in this space I'm disappointed with what i see so far with Flux. Their CEO has awesome energy but i can't help but feel they are going into a space they know little about.

The comment by Mike Bordenaro is spot on - companies like Onuma and Kimon Onuma have been talking about this for years, not only this - they've been doing something about it and have a great BIM/Facility-Planning&Management platform which is available now and increasingly used by many. Worth taking a look at or watching Kimon on TED.

Building information modeling | How hospitals can use BIM for maintenance

Building information modeling | How hospitals can use BIM for maintenance | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

As BIM adoption continues to grow, the standards and technology that support BIM are becoming more integrated...new "Lifecycle BIM" applications, such as EcoDomus and YouBIM, are emerging to more fully integrate CMMS and CAFM solutions into a data-rich, model-based interface with BIM as the backbone of the information being carried through to hospital facility managers.

Jed Fisher's insight:

It's taken two years but now I am clearly seeing the trend I had hoped to see. BIM being used downstream, not just for A+E+C but now also for FM and related areas. There is tons of opportunity here, providing occupants and building owners with unprecidented information about their building, their environment.

Two nice new companies are discussed in this article, the first time I had heard of either. If this is a space you are interested in it is also worth taking a look at bimplus.net.

3D BIM for downstream users in field and facility management

3D BIM for downstream users in field and facility management | 4D Pipeline - trends & breaking news in Visualization, Mobile, 3D, AR, VR, and CAD. | Scoop.it

THE CONCEPT OF FIELD BIM
There are now increasing initiatives in the construction industry to ‘virtualise’ the access to BIM data, to move it away from a static office environment and to enable it to become relevant on-site. GPS and Wi-Fi enabled handheld Toughbooks and iPads are seen by some as the ideal interface to facilitate ‘field BIM’ and communicate building information bi-directionally between individual operators in the field and a central server. They allow crews on site (both during and after construction) to interrogate the physical building, referencing it to a virtual information model (or vice versa) that contains information about construction or O&M aspects.

Jed Fisher's insight:

If you've been reading my blog for a while you will see that one of the things I'm very excited about are the changes and opportunities in the BIM and AEC/O (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Owners) space.

With similarities to the manufacturing PLM space, the AEC BIM space is finally modernizing itself and starting to take advantage of all the tremendous advances in mobile, collaboration, cloud, access anywhere, etc.

It's awesome to see 3D Visual BIM data becoming more and more accessible to downstream people, i.e. not just Architect and Engineers but owners, facility managers, and building occupants.

This is a great article as it reminds us that there are still truckloads (pun) of opportunities in the construction and field BIM space. We've seen a few AEC ISV companies operating in this space namely Vela (bought up by Autodesk) and also Latista. However I am sure that in the coming months we'll see more. In particular, we'll see more easy to install Apps for the field (and FM) that work with existing BIM data (if you haven't already, take a look at the bim+ approach www.bimplus.net ).

Exciting times ahead in the for Owners and Consumers of BIM data and all those wanting to interact and access information from buildings and from the process of building buildings.

Researchers create a more accurate alternative to Wi-Fi for tracking people through walls

WiTrack could be used for new kinds of gaming or to trigger help for the elderly when they fall. It is an update to earlier work released by MIT in June.

Happy New Year catchup - Impressive research, again great for AEC/BIM/GIS/FM.

Building owners and facility managers can reap the benefits of using building information modeling (BIM) long after construction is complete.
Jed Fisher's insight:

We live in buildings.

Our homes, workplaces, universities, museums, hospitals, etc.

Companies spend millions making their new building campuses and attracting talent to them (see Facebook, Apple, NVIDIA, ...)

In sci-fi's we see people using 3D maps all the time to pull up useful information but in 2013 we barely do this...

And the crazy thing is that we often have these 3D/BIM models from the building process, and if we simply used them downstream there is so much more we could do.

By having a 3D/BIM model in our pocket, on our mobile, we can see where our colleagues are (see WifiSlam), find where a room is, see which meeting rooms are free (and where they are), find faulty equipment, do inspections, navigation, visually see where team members are located, get help navigating a museum, hospital, or university campus, etc, etc.

I really am looking forward to seeing more great Apps which utilize 3D/BIM for downstream use, be it field management, facility management, or occupant interactions.

It's 2013 - let's live in the future!
