Steve McCurry captured the famous image of the "Afghan Girl" that was the cover of an issue of National Geographic. These images are of homes from around the world. I think they are a little challenging, which is good. I envisage showing them when teaching Disparities in Wealth & Development.

Thanks for the added information-I know his photo so well didn't make the connection. These photos will make for many an interesting conversation!

How Your Brain Understands Visual Language

How Your Brain Understands Visual Language | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it
The word "imagination" definitely suggests that we can also think in images. Visual language is defined as a system of communication using visual elements. The term visual language in relation to vision describes the perception, comprehension, and production of visible signs. Just as people can verbalize their thinking, they can visualize it. A diagram, a map, and a painting are all examples of uses of visual language. Its structural units include line, shape, color, form, motion, texture, pattern, direction, orientation, scale, angle, space, and proportion.

Most Common Visual Content Mistakes and How To Fix Them

Most Common Visual Content Mistakes and How To Fix Them | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

excerpted:

"What makes visual content so important and demanded? Why is it a “thing” in 2015?

"In the case of reading, our brain decodes visual information 60,000X faster than text. Visuals are perceived faster and can evoke much stronger emotions when the receiver sees the content.

"Information overload. There is more information created in one year than it was created in thousand of years prior now. We’re drowning into the ocean of text based content.

"Life pace is increasing and rapid lifestyle is shaping our future as well as the way we read, learn, and enjoy. People don’t have time to read and skimming as well as scanning have become the norm in many industries.

"Virality, and easy share-ability. Think of the exponential growth of Pinterest and Tumblr, which are purely visual based. Images are easily shared and received much better than plain text...."  (click through on thumbnail for more)

I Turn Work Frustrations Into Mini Magic In My Office: Tiny #SocialMedia Images From Derrick Lin

I Turn Work Frustrations Into Mini Magic In My Office: Tiny #SocialMedia Images From Derrick Lin | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it
Sometimes work can be really hectic and frustrating and as grownups, we are expected to be cool about it and keep the whining to ourselves. I work in advertising and my workday is often very chaotic and unpredictable. While trying not to let the stress get the best of me, I decided to turn the mundane and often annoying little moments in my agency life into inspirations for something whimsical and magical.

The Body in Nature: Unusually Beautiful Photographs

The Body in Nature: Unusually Beautiful Photographs | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

Photographing the nude is just about as old as the camera itself… from cheesy pinups to surreal body landscapes, the form has been explored in just about every way imaginable. That’s why, when I ran across the work of Arno Rafael Minkkinen I was truly blown away. His work is filled with almost magical abstract forms created using just creatively positioned figures in the landscape and his well placed lens… nothing more. Each photograph is a revelation, something to decipher for its mysterious form and appreciate for its lyrical beauty.

Visual Listening: Social Media's Next Frontier

Visual Listening: Social Media's Next Frontier | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

by Will McInnes

"The human brain can process images in as little as 13 milliseconds, according to research from MIT. That’s a lot faster than earlier studies, which suggested it takes 100 milliseconds. Fact is, visuals are just easier to consume.

This isn’t a secret to marketers. It’s the reason images have always been a huge mainstay in advertising, as well as the driving force behind the tidal wave of photos and image-based content shared on social networks — as many as 500 million per day, according to last year’s Internet trends report from Mary Meeker. The Power of Aesthetic Force: Anna Deavere Smith and Sarah Lewis on Beauty as a Tool of Justice and a Catalyst for “Nonselfing”

The Power of Aesthetic Force: Anna Deavere Smith and Sarah Lewis on Beauty as a Tool of Justice and a Catalyst for “Nonselfing” | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

“Beauty, as a conscious element of experience, as a thing to be valued and explored, has gone into abeyance among us,”

Marilynne Robinson wrote in her exquisite reflection on beauty. In our visually voracious culture of accelerating“aesthetic consumerism,” is there still room for beauty not as a trifled commodity but as both an elevating force of transcendence and a grounding force of moral solidity? (more)

Put The Art In Article - Draw Science

Put The Art In Article - Draw Science | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

Science communication is broken. Let's fix it.

"I've already ranted about the problems with science communication. Even when a layperson gets access to a paper despite all the pay-per-view journals, the use of esoteric jargon makes it practically impossible for the public to read fresh-from-the-lab-bench science. For the last few months, I've been working on a solution through Draw Science. Now it's time to take off the band-aid and treat the wound."

Pinterest implements ‘visual search' tech to intelligently locate similar images

Pinterest implements ‘visual search' tech to intelligently locate similar images | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

Pinterest is debuting a new feature called visual search that allows similar images to be discovered and displayed.

"Where it gets really interesting is what powers visual search. Visual search is driven by something called deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence that’s getting wider use. It “trains” artificial neural networks – think of them as the computer systems behind interfaces – by providing them with a lot of data. Then, it gets inferences in reply to this new data."

Read more: http://www.digitaltrends.com/social-media/intelligent-visual-search-feature-pinterest/#ixzz3bqbEF3M8

Susan Davis Cushing's insight:

Important To Note: No intelligent agent to to date has matched the human mind in ability to chase a concept or determine the interesting components of the visual content (except by measuring pulse rate). Game On, big data. :>)

Hong Hao Photographs Things (Well, Everything)

Hong Hao Photographs Things (Well, Everything) | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it
The photographer Hong Hao does what most of us wish we could: He’s kept track of almost every item in his life for the past 14 years. Hong, who is based in Beijing and shows at Pace’s gallery there, has been working for over a decade on a project in which he documents everything he’s consumed, by scanning each used item and composing what results into colorful, intriguing large-format still lifes. Some of the images are themed: a collection of mugs, for example, or of money, Post-its or paper notes. Each photographic assemblage reflects a certain time in Hong’s life — and their overall evolution represents the incredible change in Chinese consumer habits over the last 14 years.
Susan Davis Cushing's insight:

We have arrived at a point in our lives where we can document, and photograph everything in our lives. The question - should we? Is there enough room in our brains for all of the visual content we consume?

The cultural and anthropological value of such a collection is clear to me - we have become repositories of junk - arranged into pretty pictures.

Impertinent Collection

by Christoph Niemann

"Great art speaks to us, but it’s rare that we are able to talk back. Armed with a sketchbook and a camera, our Abstract Sunday columnist stalked the halls of the Museum of Modern Art for a week this winter, using a lo-fi technique that allowed him to transform the museum’s masterpieces. By holding up his drawings between his camera and the painting, he could extend them outside their frame or highlight visual confluences among the artworks and their surroundings, creating a whole new gallery in the process."

Lose Yourself in the Eerie GIFs of DarkAngelØne | The Creators Project | Images in 21st Century Communication | Scoop.it

"When I was young, someone once told me that different materials could convey different emotions. In his new series, poison, DarkAngelØne proves that the adage also applies to the digital age. Although the moving objects in these GIFs, of course, aren't made from real steel, wood, or buttons, computer generated imagery still retains certain feelings, including coldness and even warmth. By animating the fabrics and materials adorning their models, DarkAngelØne makes still fashion photographs come alive."

""Some people call me an artist, but I see myself as someone who just likes to play with pictures," the ever-humble DarkAngelØne writes in his personal introduction. Nevertheless, he manages to conjure the surreal out of the once-static, and for someone who claims to just be messing around, that's an achievement, indeed.'"
