Goodbye Cursive~Hello Coding: Conflicts over School Goals

Goodbye Cursive~Hello Coding: Conflicts over School Goals | Visual*~*Revolution | Scoop.it

Larry Cuban points out that there is no evidence that teaching other languages, unless they are used extensively, helps students be more creative through transfer. Having taught French at various times, I would agree. Students have to find immediate usage. What it means to teach the "whole child" is something important to consider at the classroom level and allow that to inform changes.

How do we promote creativity in schools? This is one of the prevailing concerns of many progressive education reformers. From a long-term fiscal perspective, creativity can lead to innovation, and for the U.S. to have a competitive edge in the global economy, minds capable of identifying problems and imagining new possibilities are a necessity. But given the constructs of public schools, can creativity truly be valued?
