New Website Visualizes Human Activity in Cities Across the World

New Website Visualizes Human Activity in Cities Across the World | visual data | Scoop.it

The SENSEable City Laboratory at MIT has developed a new tool with Ericsson to better understand human behavior. "ManyCities" is a new website that "explores the spatio-temporal patterns of mobile phone activity in cities across the world," including LondonNew YorkLos Angeles and Hong Kong. Taking complex data and organizing it in a intuitive way, the application allows users to quickly visualize patterns of human movement within the urban context down to the neighborhood scale. You can imagine how useful a tool like this can be for urban planners or even daily commuters, especially once real time analytics come into play.

5 Fascinating Font Infographics

5 Fascinating Font Infographics | visual data | Scoop.it

Typefaces are one of the most important, yet underappreciated, elements when it comes to creating incredible web and graphic designs. While most people think about the aesthetic of their design, color choices, and functionality, few people think about the ability of typeface – on its own – to convey a message. Fonts make up words but they are communicators themselves, and the font choice you make can either make or break your website/digital communication.

Check out these 5 infographics to know a little bit more about where fonts came from, how they work, and why they’re so important.

The Urban Observatory: A New Way To Compare Cities, From The Creator Of TED

The Urban Observatory: A New Way To Compare Cities, From The Creator Of TED | visual data | Scoop.it
This giant installation and a website you can play with at home lets you compare the worlds urban centers side by side.

We live in a world of easily accessible maps; however, our map knowledge is limited by the fact that no two cities collect data the same way. Maps often aren’t drawn to the same scale, and until now, there hasn’t been a way to compare data on things like income, cost of living, water distribution, and power grids.

It’s a problem that has bugged Richard Saul Wurman, the creator of the TED conference (as well as an architect and graphic designer), for decades.

Wurman recently teamed up with Jon Kamen of Radical Media and Esri president Jack Dangermond to create an ambitious solution: the Urban Observatory, an immersive exhibit featuring standardized comparative data on over 16 cities. Zoom in on one city map and other cities will simultaneously zoom in at the same scale, making it possible to compare data on traffic density, vegetation, residential land use, and so on.

Data Visualization and Infographics Resources

Data Visualization and Infographics Resources | visual data | Scoop.it
Data visualizations and infographics can make complex datasets easier to understand and comprehend. By creating a graphical represenatation of data and statistics, complicated concepts and information can make more sense in less time.

Many visualizations focus on representing a specific set of data or statistical information. Others focus on less-concrete topics, providing a visual representation of abstract concepts. Generally speaking, the first type appear more like graphs or charts and the latter are often more creative and imaginative.
But visualizations and infographics can be used poorly, too. Putting in too much information (or not enough), using improper formats for the information provided, and other failures are common. Visit the article link for more than 25 useful resources for infographics and data visualization. Visual.ly launches redesign with social features for its community of 145K users

Visual.ly launches redesign with social features for its community of 145K users | visual data | Scoop.it
Infographics have quickly become the bane of the Web since exploding in popularity over the past year. The number of poor designs, empty stats, bias and sketchy sources are enough to make any design-conscious person cringe, but that’s because infographics aren’t any different from any other sort of design; there’s good and bad work out there, and the latter always outweighs the former. In other words, the average website isn’t going to be beautiful or useful, but that doesn’t mean the gems aren’t worth it.

With that in mind, I’d like to draw your attention to Visual.ly. The data-driven startup continues to grow as a place for designers to come together over visualizations and infographics, and today the company is launching a completely “revamped” design, with social features that let users like, share and follow their favorite topics, users and designers.

Visual.ly’s redesign brings a much stronger community element into the site, which could help strengthen the startup’s existing user-base, while helping to highlight and promote the best work. So far content has been key, and now social is raising in importance for the site’s 32K designers and nearly 145K users...

New MIT Media Lab Tool Lets Anyone Visualize Unwieldy Government Data

New MIT Media Lab Tool Lets Anyone Visualize Unwieldy Government Data | visual data | Scoop.it

DataViva, a project developed in part by Media Lab professor Csar Hidalgo, aims to make a wide swath of government economic data usable with a series of visualization apps.

In the four years since the U.S. government created data.gov, the first national repository for open data, more than 400,000 datasets are available online from 175 agencies. Governments all over the world have taken steps to make data more transparent and available. But in practice, much of that data--accessible as spreadsheets through sites like data.gov--is incomprehensible to the average person.

DataViva offers web apps that turn those spreadsheets into something more comprehensible for the average user. The site, which officially launched last week, has lofty goals: to visualize data encompassing the entire Brazilian economy over the last decade, with more than 100 million interactive visualizations that can be created at the touch of a button in a series of apps. The future of open government isn't just dumping raw datasets onto a server: It's also about making those datasets digestible for a less data-savvy public.

A Carefully Selected List of Recommended Tools

A Carefully Selected List of Recommended Tools | visual data | Scoop.it
When I meet with people and talk about our work, I get asked a lot what technology we use to create interactive and dynamic data visualizations.

At Interactive Things, we have a set of preferred libraries, applications and services that we use regularly in our work. We will select the most fitting tool for the job depending on the requirements of the project. Sometimes a really simple tool is all you need to create something meaningful. On other occasions, a more multifaceted repertoire is needed. But how does one choose the right thing to use? An endless list of every tool available, does not answer that question and a recommendation from a friend is oftentimes more valuable.

That’s why we have put together a selection of tools that we use the most and that we enjoy working with. We called it selection.datavisualization.ch. It includes libraries for plotting data on maps, frameworks for creating charts, graphs and diagrams and tools to simplify the handling of data. Even if you’re not into programming, you’ll find applications that can be used without writing one single line of code. We will keep this list as a living repository and add / remove things as technology develops...
