How Does Data Visualization Work?

How Does Data Visualization Work? | visual data | Scoop.it

Data visualization is an amazing tool. The data we deal with daily would be almost entirely inaccessible when locked up in numerical formats. Luckily, data visualization can help us to extract information, insights, or even knowledge from that data. It relies on the remarkable human visual system that turns visible light into meaningful semantics that inform our decisions.

More details on the human visual system, visual metaphors, visual context, exploration and presentation at the article link.

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today | visual data | Scoop.it

With 150,000 or so old print maps to his name, David Rumsey has earned his reputed place among the world's "finest private collectors." He continues to expand his personal trove as well as the digitized sub-collection he makes open to the public online — some 38,000 strong, and growing.

He's created a series of interactive maps that layer old prints onto the Google Earth and Google Maps platforms, and this summer he plans to launch a geo-referencing tool (similar to one recently introduced by the British Library) that lets users get involved in the digital mapping process themselves.

While preparing for this next expansion of his online map empire, Rumsey remains fascinated by "the power of putting these images up and letting them go," he says.

"Maps have a way of speaking to people very straightforward," he says. "You don't have to have a lot of knowledge of map history or history in general. To me they're perfect tools for teaching history to the public."

The Ultimate Guide To Infographics

The Ultimate Guide To Infographics | visual data | Scoop.it

Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics present complex information quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing, and education. With an information graphic, computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians develop and communicate concepts using a single symbol to process information.

View three examples of visualizations defining what infographics are, and gain a better understanding of the value of an infographic in education with a video that demonstrates how their potential when used effectively in an educational setting.

Visit the article link for the video, 'The Value of Visualization', as well as more details on the science behind infographics and it's potential  for educational applications.

How NASA Makes Scientific Data Beautiful

How NASA Makes Scientific Data Beautiful | visual data | Scoop.it

How do you make education interesting and, more importantly, beautiful? When it comes to the work of NASA, attracting enthusiasts isn’t difficult with the usual visuals of bright stars and colorful planets on hand. Look no further than the recent awe over Mars rover Curiosity’s high-res pictures to see proof of humanity’s fascination with space.

But not all of NASA’s data is packaged into a neat little photos. In fact, some of the organization’s most important findings about space come back in the form of numbers, beamed in by one of the many satellites orbiting our planet. And this information is brought to life by the Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) — a team of scientists and animators that turns numerical data into a dynamic graphic or video.

The SVS is not only an active and creative tool for NASA outreach — it has even gone viral. Earlier this year, the SVS team received information from a project team called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, or ECCO, which uses mathematical tools to better understand how the ocean’s circulation patterns change over time. The result was Perpetual Ocean, a detailed and moving video interpreting a year’s worth of the ocean’s current patterns in minutes...

Visualization (Sensemaking) in Rapid Agile Learning Design

Visualization (Sensemaking) in Rapid Agile Learning Design | visual data | Scoop.it

Common definitions of visualization usually read something like, “to form a mental image,” thus we often think of visualization as being a simple solo technique, such as picturing “a dog eating a bone” or “a person doing the right thing.” However in an organization context, visualization is much more complex in that while it involves an image of the working environment, it is also a complex process that is very social in nature.

Visualization is often used interchangeably with sensemaking—making sense of the world we live and operate in, and then acting within that framework of understanding to achieve desired goals. Thus visualization is not just a shared (social) image with intent, it also implies ACTION. This framework can be used for building agile or rapid learning designs, fixing performance problems, implementing informal learning solutions, etc...

How to Turn Infographics Into Effective Teaching Tools

How to Turn Infographics Into Effective Teaching Tools | visual data | Scoop.it

Infographics have already established themselves as engaging news and marketing tools, but they are also entering the education space in new and exciting ways.

A good graphic can fit these standards by reinforcing to students that their conclusions should be grounded in evidence and by challenging their ability to organize a hierarchy of systems, a.k.a. the ability to tell what pieces of information are the most important.

Infographics is a very interesting way of presenting information. Students can really learn to dig deep into specific information and facts and create infographics to show what they have learned. GREAT!!!!!

Fàtima Galan's curator insight, October 2, 2013 9:21 AM

"The goal of the system is to help students distill the most important pieces of information from any given text and form a conclusion."

7 Data Visualization Tools You Can Use In The Classroom

7 Data Visualization Tools You Can Use In The Classroom | visual data | Scoop.it

No matter what happens, there will always be a demand for data visualization tools. Data on its own can be pretty boring and brightening it up with images and other visual tools, it can make normally inaccessible information much easier to digest. (Editor’s Note: It’s also great for information reading literacy, and the new Common Core demand for multimedia “texts.”)

There are a number of fantastic tools out there that will present your data in an accessible manner. All of the tools listed below are free and chances are you’ve used one or two of the tools mentioned before.

Mixed Skillsets Produce Great Infographics

Mixed Skillsets Produce Great Infographics | visual data | Scoop.it

Accurat is a design agency and consultancy based in Milan, Italy, transforming data into meaningful stories, and developing multimedia narratives and interactive applications.

Our studio doesn’t have a formal information visualization education background. The four associates have majors in completely different fields: Architecture, Sociology, Design and Economics.

This is a strange skill composition for a design studio, but indeed it’s what brings novelty in Accurat’s body of work.

When working on information visualization, this multifaceted background clearly emerges, leading to the design of unorthodox visual metaphors, where our focus is on the data analysis, theories and storytelling side.

In practice, this translates into a very straightforward process in the design of the visualizations: instead of starting with a selection of the most proper metaphor among widely used models of graphs, charts and tables, the visual starts with the story we want to tell, without any constriction from a chosen format. This way, it’s way easier to break rules, merge ideas together and come up with naive but powerful and new visual schemes...

Read the complete article for a detailed and comprehensive look at this unique approach to vizualization, storytelling and the process it takes to achieve successful and creative results, as explained with project examples and case studies.
