Global data geovisualized

Learn about the world by changing the familiar map. Select a subject from the top menu and watch the map resize. A countrys total area no longer represents land mass, but items relevant to the subject (i.e.

Since I ran out of spot on my Top 10 list quick, this is getting 'honorable mention.'  The geovisualization in this interactive map is outstanding (translation: I could play with this all day).  This displayed map shows the destination countries for migrants, with links to the data and information to read up on the topic.  Truly impressive.

The Internet Of Things: Every Device That Connects Us [Infographic]

The Internet Of Things: Every Device That Connects Us [Infographic] | visual data | Scoop.it

When trying to piece together the devices that we use to connect to each other, it’s easy to see that it’s going to take a piece of paper the size of Texas to feature them all. Even if we manage to do so, we will be far from connecting them all in whatever way they use the Internet. So what do we do? Well, we do it anyway, and on a computer of course. Intel put together a really interesting infographic that lines up all the devices that we use to connect to each other.

For the first time, we can get a clear view of how the technological infrastructure was built and to what extent it reaches out. As you can see, the numbers represented get multiplied with each major technological milestone, and it’s easy to see that we’re heading for something really interesting in the future. Whatever it will be that will beat the Internet will be major, and even though I can’t imagine what that will be right now, it’s still exciting to know that we always come up with something to beat the previous technology. What do you think will be the next big thing in technology that will top the Internet?

The 22 Best Infographics We Found In 2011

The 22 Best Infographics We Found In 2011 | visual data | Scoop.it

2011 was a huge year for infographic design. Large companies embraced data renderings as a business strategy like never before, whether it was to promote their brand (GE) or bolster their bottom line (the New York Times). Nowhere was that more evident than at Facebook. Timeline, the site’s most ambitious redesign to date, brought the central tenet of data viz--organizing unwieldy bits and bobs into a compelling, visual narrative--to millions of people around the world...

The Debate: Have Infographics Jumped The Shark?

The Debate: Have Infographics Jumped The Shark? | visual data | Scoop.it
Megan McArdle at the Atlantic piles on the Infographic debate, " issuing a plea to bloggers to help stop this plague in its track."...

A while back I asked 'Have infographics jumped the shark?'.

At the time I was complaining primarily about how well they convey information and how easy they are to check since they lack hyperlinks. I alluded to some pretty strange linkbait. Then we, like a lot of other sites, got caught in the pure linkbait play Bikes Will Save You and the Planet (Infographic) which is still up for some reason. Chris responded to this with his post On Bike Infographics & Link Marketing, where he noted that even a good infographic can make us feel "icky" if they are linkbait.

Data Visualisation and all things shiny!

Data Visualisation and all things shiny! | visual data | Scoop.it
Seen below is an abstract clean approach to data visualisation, often used in reports to showcase a metric over time and or to support numerical data visually. Raphaelis-Java--Visualisation ... Artistic Data Visualisation.

It seems, with the development of the internet, and supporting technology in our everyday lives, our time is more and more precious. This is why many of us are so accepting of taking time out of our hectic schedules (even if it is a few minutes) to digest information in the form of an ‘image’ as an expression of data. Data visualisations applications are far reaching, from boardroom presentations, report generation, creative content generation for websites (linkbaits), advertisments and education to name a handful.

Updated Comparison of Data Visualization tools

Updated Comparison of Data Visualization tools | visual data | Scoop.it

One of the most popular posts on this blog was a comparison of Data Visualization Tools, which originally was posted more then a year ago where I compared those best tools only qualitatively. However since then I got a lot of requests to compare those tools “quantitatively”.

However I quickly realized that such “quantitative” comparison cannot be objective. So here it is – the updated and very subjective comparison of best Data Visualization tools, as I see them at the end of 2011.

Infographic Of The Day: 13 Rules For Realizing Your Creative Vision

Infographic Of The Day: 13 Rules For Realizing Your Creative Vision | visual data | Scoop.it

Bre Pettis knows a thing or two about getting things done rather than getting them perfect: He's the founder of Makerbot, a company that turns out cheap rapid prototyping machines. No one would say they've been perfectly realized, but a key to Makerbot's success is that it has evolved in the real world, rather than foundering as just another great idea.

With that in mind, Pettis and collaborator Kio Stark gave themselves exactly 20 minutes to create a manifesto encapsulating everything they knew about bring a creative vision to life. They called it The Done Manifesto.

The folks at BestVendor.com interviewed 500 developers and compiled this profile of the tools that they actually use. A few stalwarts predominate, such as Git, Eclipse, AWS, Dropbox, ...

But there were a few surprises too, including 23% using Notepad++ as their text editor and 8% using Heroku to host their apps. Many of the categories are wide open. All of those surveyed are from companies of less than 100 people from around the world.

How Data Visualization Can Help Make Better Decisions

How Data Visualization Can Help Make Better Decisions | visual data | Scoop.it
We all know that data visualization allows data to tell a story, but just what does that mean?

Each day we’re shown all sorts of infographics telling us the how different age groups interact online, the history of Steve Job’s career or cell phone texting statistics. While fun, these inforgaphics feel slightly esoteric. Today, I wanted to help show real life applications of data visualization and help answer the question: How can data visualization help me make better decisions?

The Best Data Visualization Projects of 2011

The Best Data Visualization Projects of 2011 | visual data | Scoop.it

If last year (and maybe the year before) was the year of the gigantic graphic, this was the year of big data. Or maybe we've gotten better at filtering to the good stuff. (Fancy that.) In any case, data graphics continue to thrive and designers are putting more thought into what the data are about, and that's a very good thing.
So here are my favorites from 2011, ordered by preference. The order could easily scramble depending when you ask me...

Data Visualization (or why pretty pictures matter)

Data Visualization (or why pretty pictures matter) | visual data | Scoop.it

Numbers are useful if they communicate important ideas and actionable concepts. They are useless if they meaninglessly clutter the field of information.

As an analyst, it’s not enough to simply pull out of the data the 15 or 20 most important numbers that that will make a difference for our client, we also need to convey that information in a way that’s as easy to process as possible. The human brain instinctively sizes up the green part of a pie chart and sees it is bigger than the red part of the pie chart faster and on a deeper level than it processes that 45% is larger than 28%. It’s why we plot trend numbers on a line graph rather than a row. The use of colors and shapes reinforce the points being made by the numbers, and the methods used to show the data increase the ease of absorption among your viewers, and consequently its impact.

Review: Designing Data Visualizations

Review: Designing Data Visualizations | visual data | Scoop.it
Here's how a rookie experienced his first introduction to visualization from Julie Steele and Noah Iliinsky's new book Designing Data Visualizations. What he learned and how this helps him to move forward.

It would be a good primer for people who are already working with data and looking for guidance about making their work more accessible; another group of people who might find themselves overwhelmed by the amount of choices they have to make while working on visualizations: designers with little knowledge about visual perception and how to apply its’ principles to their work.

Julie and Noah manage to introduce the basics of visualization in a very accessible and comprehensible way. Furthermore, the slim format and of the book makes it a great read for your next flight or train ride.
