The Future of Data Visualization Tools

The Future of Data Visualization Tools | visual data | Scoop.it

Data is everywhere and well-designed data graphics can be both beautiful and meaningful. As visualizations take center stage in a data-centric world, researchers and developers spend much time understanding and creating better visualizations. But they spend just as much time understanding how tools can help programmers and designers create visualizations faster, more effectively, and more enjoyably.

As any visualization practitioner will tell you, turning a dataset from raw stuff in a file to a final result in a picture is far from a single-track, linear path. Rather, there is a constant iteration of competing designs, tweaking and evaluating at once their pros and cons. The visualization research community has recognized the importance of keeping track of this process.

New data tool creates visual model of information from readers

New data tool creates visual model of information from readers | visual data | Scoop.it

Not many years ago, data visualization was a field of charts, graphs & diagrams. But today, we can quickly transform mountains of data into a liquid medium- interactive computer graphics, presenting a new palette of possibilities.

Skyline is an interactive visualization of responses from sources in the Public Insight Network. It’s intended to quickly show how many people responded to a PIN query, how much they had to say and then, when you "drill down" into the Skyline, to allow you to read those responses in detail.

Data like this is often messy, so, rather than trying to get users to manually enter their work history, Vizualize.me just connects to LinkedIn, pulls out the already-structured data, and converts it into the visualization.

Density Design’s Dust Platform

Density Design’s Dust Platform | visual data | Scoop.it

Dust is an ongoing research project developed for Iridescent Learning, an American NGO. The project’s aim is to provide a freely available, web based information visualization tool that supports parents in exploring and comparing the educational offerings from selected major cities in the United States.

Supported by geographical maps and close-up visualizations users can create custom profiles based on their needs and priorities and then perform a search for the most appropriate schools for their children. Dust aims to combine the capability of information visualization in depicting synthetic views of complex, multidimensional, and georeferenced data; with a rich, yet intuitive, web-user experience.
