Google Media Tools: a new intersection for newsgathering

Google Media Tools: a new intersection for newsgathering | visual data | Scoop.it

The New York Times used Google+ Hangouts to interview U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry about Syria’s chemical weapons. The Weather Channel used Google Earth to illustrate the damage of Superstorm Sandy through dramatic before and after satellite images and live YouTube video. And Svenska Dagbladet used the Google Maps API and crowdsourced information from readers to plot disparities in neighborhood mortgage rates, generating a meaningful debate in Sweden.

It’s about seeing the patterns in the data that flush out a story and then help you to start telling that story. Only by doing that can you move data off the spreadsheet and out into the real world of consumer behaviour and preferences.

The best analogy and the one used frequently, is with journalism. It’s no surprise either that many great examples of data visualisation come from the publishing and media sectors. Journalists face the same challenge that we do of sifting large amounts of often conflicting data to arrive at a truth or an insight...

This Is the World on Flickr: A Photo Documentation Map | visual data | Scoop.it
A map from the Oxford Internet Institute reveals the geographical distribution of billions of photos uploaded to the popular image-sharing site.

Data Science Is the New Black

Data Science Is the New Black | visual data | Scoop.it

As Tim O’Reilly tweeted last week, “Data Science is the new black.” Data has definitely got people talking and rethinking the implications, and that includes a growing number of leading journalists and journalism schools…and media funders.

Consider just three recent happenings:

-Earlier this year, data camps were held at both Columbia University and University of Texas.
-At the Mozilla Festival in London late last year, a team of developers, designers, and digital journalists set out to write the first Data Journalism Handbook.
-Just last month, the Global Editors Network announced the first data journalism awards.
