18 Infographics that You Can Actually Learn From

18 Infographics that You Can Actually Learn From | visual data | Scoop.it
While today’s infographics often form a complex narrative and include a series of information displays, they still need certain core attributes.

What are the secrets to these useful, graceful infographics?

While today’s infographics often form a complex narrative and include a series of stats, charts, and graphs, they still need certain core attributes, and both the most simple data visualizations and the components of a complex infographic can help us to see best practices. Great infographics offer your audience a compelling visual experience that’s as simple as possible, and is organized in a visual hierarchy.

Though few infographics hit the mark across the board, there’s a teachable point stashed in each example — whether the infographic includes a textual narrative or a bare bones map. Let’s set out to see what lessons these infographics illustrate for us.

Infographics are a great way to make information visible. I love that they create a snapshot of basic facts and ideas. We can use them to create much larger narratives in our classrooms. Getting students to create them is a good way to demonstrate understanding and make connections between ideas.

The Intersection of Geography & Data: 2012's Best Maps

The Intersection of Geography & Data: 2012's Best Maps | visual data | Scoop.it

It's been an eventful year for cartography.

Development and disaster continue to mold the physical world, but for mapmakers, keeping up with geographic changes is busy work -- a tweaked direction here, a freeway exit there. It's very important busy work, as we learned this September when Apple reminded us not to take a good map for granted.

The intersection of geography and data, though, is just beginning to fill out. Together with interactive functions like sliders, timelines, and embedded information, the best new maps resemble Rand McNally's about as much as movies look like photographs. Creating an accurate representation of geography and infrastructure is only the tip of the iceberg.

What happens when you integrate statistics about rising seas, gang affiliations, metaphors and beer?

A whole new understanding of the way the world works. And some pretty sweet maps. Without further ado, the top favorite maps of the year...

(visit the article link for the maps and associated links)

Lauren Moss's insight:

A gallery of different approaches to visualizing topics covering a broad range of data through cartography and mapping...

Examples are supplemented with a summary of the intent, process + graphics of each map, noting the elements that make for successful representations of specific concepts, ideas + data.

From urban issues to voting trends to navigation apps and software, maps are tools that can be highly effective in data visualization, as evidenced in this cartographic collection curated by the Atlantic Cities.

Visual Loop's selection of keynotes, TED Talks, and interviews by some of the top names in the field:

From Visualoop.com:

  • After the success of our collection of data visualization presentations a few weeks ago, we decided to push even further our research of multimedia resources and take the risk of selecting some videos. And we say risk, because the abundance of data visualization videos on the Internet is simply mind-blowing.
  • Just think about it: How many events are there about information visualization? Dozens, maybe hundreds every year. Then, add the documentaries, interviews and educational videos, and soon you’ll realize, like we did, that this list could easily be up to one hundred or more.
  • That means that a lot of good stuff was left behind, so apologies for that – but feel free to leave your recommendations in the comments section. Also, please note that some of these videos are over one hour long.

Top 10 Video Infographics of 2012

Top 10 Video Infographics of 2012 | visual data | Scoop.it

In the great tradition of end of year blog posts, here's a feature on the top 10 video infographics of 2012.

Over the year, I’ve curated 222 videos on this site [videoinfographics.net], and reviewed hundreds more. As part of my process of watching and curating so many infographic videos, I started to keep my own 3-star ranking system of these videos in a spreadsheet to help me keep track of those that I think are the most outstanding. The result was about 60 3-star videos in 2012. That’s too many to feature in a top X list so I turned to the Likes and Comments of my top ranked videos (and in doing so eliminated videos only featured on YouTube since YouTube comments are pretty much trash). This resulted in a list of 10 videos that had triple digit Likes on their Vimeo pages.

Voila! A top 10 list. So, in a ascending order, here are the top 10 most liked animated video infographics featured here in 2012, including number of Likes and Comments for each (as of December 30, 2012).

30 Infographic Resumes for Inspiration

30 Infographic Resumes for Inspiration | visual data | Scoop.it

A few years back, presenting an infographic résumé was something completely unthinkable, even if you were applying to a job where creativity and graphic skills were important. It simply didn’t happen. Then, with the rise of the online portfolios and social networks, it became more common to present professional background and skills with a more visual appeal.

Today, infographics seem to be everywhere and web services will transform your social media activity and LinkedIn profile into visual displays, making it possible for those without the necessary graphic abilities to have their own illustrated curriculum.

Though popular, the resume as infographic trend is fairly new to employers, so the best option for most professionals is to look at them as a supplement to the traditional format. If you decide to create your own, look around for examples- they range from the complex to those with a more minimalistic approach. Both types can be effective, if the objective is to stand out from the crowd...

Data Visualization and Infographics Resources

Data Visualization and Infographics Resources | visual data | Scoop.it
Data visualizations and infographics can make complex datasets easier to understand and comprehend. By creating a graphical represenatation of data and statistics, complicated concepts and information can make more sense in less time.

Many visualizations focus on representing a specific set of data or statistical information. Others focus on less-concrete topics, providing a visual representation of abstract concepts. Generally speaking, the first type appear more like graphs or charts and the latter are often more creative and imaginative.
But visualizations and infographics can be used poorly, too. Putting in too much information (or not enough), using improper formats for the information provided, and other failures are common. Visit the article link for more than 25 useful resources for infographics and data visualization. Data + Design Project: Bubble Charts

Data + Design Project: Bubble Charts | visual data | Scoop.it
Here at Visual News, we’ve been looking for designers/illustrators to participate in an ongoing design series called the Data + Design Project.

Each month, a few designers are invited to create a data visualization piece, using data about a subject which interests them. Last month the theme was Bubble Charts, a style of graphic which plots data using points of varying sizes and locations to visually represent a value. We’re very excited about the beautiful, interesting and informative results we’ve received from this months four designers: Dan Matutina, Matt Naylor, Nate Luetkehans and Matt Chase.
Check out the designs contributed for “Bubble Chart March” below, then see the main Data + Design Project page for full-sized versions. You can always find the project through the link on our menu bar.
