21 Examples of 'Real Life' Physical Infographics

21 Examples of 'Real Life' Physical Infographics | visual data | Scoop.it

Real life data visualization is to be an upcoming trend, called physical infographics or real world visualization. They visualize data with real objects, often combined with typography.

Real Life Infographics are different than other inforgraphics in that they rely much more on photographs instead of a purely digital medium. Moving away from the Everthing-Is-Possible-Unicorn-Utopia of Illustrator is an interesting limitation, as well as a simplifying one. As designers we like to come up with creative ways to display information that will still blow your mind, despite any technical limitations. The real world isn't perfect, and therefore it may not be as accurate as abstract shapes like graph bars. Even though these visualizations still strive for accuracy, you will notice that the context of these graphics will become much more important than precision.

Siempre hablamos de los mind maps. Si le añadimos creatividad además al hecho de describir la creatividad en sí, el resultado es asombroso.

Interesting. As thoughts actually appear. Randomly and like a mess.

A creative process can sometimes be quite difficult to describe. This actuallly makes it look easy.

Is Data Visualization Art?

Is Data Visualization Art? | visual data | Scoop.it

Data Visualization is driven by data. Its form is often derived from optimizing the efficiency of inputting data (and information about that data) into a human brain. It is a very pragmatic practice, built around numbers and logic.

And yet it is beautiful. It evokes emotions. It can be aesthetically pleasing, or hideous. It communicates complex concepts and provokes thought. It is consumed for enjoyment. Some visualizations even share similarities with poetry.

There are several stages in the life cycle of data visualizations, and while the core of the practice is driven by rational thinking, any number of stages in the process have opportunities for subjective decisions or artistic interpretations...

Infographic: Are We Brainstorming the Wrong Way?

Infographic: Are We Brainstorming the Wrong Way? | visual data | Scoop.it
In open-plan advertising offices, conference rooms, and design firms everywhere, employees are being encouraged to gather together and reach inside their noggins to pull out the most original and creative ideas for good brainstorming sessions.

Turns out, decades of psychology research have shown that traditional brainstorming may not be the best way to innovate. On the contrary, collaborating in such ways yields less quality ideas than working in solitude and later meeting to share. Find out the effectiveness of brainstorming in this infographic created with Mavenlink...

Infographic Of The Day: 13 Rules For Realizing Your Creative Vision

Infographic Of The Day: 13 Rules For Realizing Your Creative Vision | visual data | Scoop.it

Bre Pettis knows a thing or two about getting things done rather than getting them perfect: He's the founder of Makerbot, a company that turns out cheap rapid prototyping machines. No one would say they've been perfectly realized, but a key to Makerbot's success is that it has evolved in the real world, rather than foundering as just another great idea.

With that in mind, Pettis and collaborator Kio Stark gave themselves exactly 20 minutes to create a manifesto encapsulating everything they knew about bring a creative vision to life. They called it The Done Manifesto.

Why Visual Trumps Verbal Brainstorming

Why Visual Trumps Verbal Brainstorming | visual data | Scoop.it

Visual brainstorming is about collaboratively-generating ideas, without using the spoken or written word. You might use objects, which teams put together to solve problems. You might use arts and crafts materials, such as colored construction paper, tape, string, card, pens, and the like. You might use people to create improvisational role-plays.

Visual brainstorming need not be limited to physical objects, such as new products. You may also use it to brainstorm processes, services, and activities. All you need is a little imagination and the ability to visualize problems.

Data Visualization: Communication & Creativity

Data Visualization: Communication & Creativity | visual data | Scoop.it

Visual communication skills are alien to some in the research industry, but they needn’t be. Data visualisation can become part of the research process through smart hiring, skills training and expert partnerships.

Data visualisation should not be regarded as an end in itself; the real point to data visualisation - the value that it brings to research buyers and suppliers - is as an aid to storytelling. It’s about seeing the patterns in the data that flush out a story and then help you to start telling that story. Only by doing that can you move data off the spreadsheet and out into the real world of consumer behaviour and preferences.

The best analogy and the one used frequently, is with journalism. It’s no surprise either that many great examples of data visualisation come from the publishing and media sectors. Journalists face the same challenge that we do of sifting large amounts of often conflicting data to arrive at a truth or an insight...

Lauren Moss's insight:

An interesting look at the current role of data visualization and data journalism in the advancement of research, communication, and brand development.

Data + Design: the Case for Creating Visualizations by Hand

Data + Design: the Case for Creating Visualizations by Hand | visual data | Scoop.it

Programs like Photoshop and Illustrator prompt perfection by bringing mathematics to bear on our inexact lines, make perfect circles out of our warbly loops, and create the exact #xxxxxx for our pixelated palettes.

While technology plays a big role in the data visualization world, it can come at a loss of variation: the unique stories that only our own hands can tell.

For designers and journalists, there are a number of good reasons to design by hand...

Last week, Pratt-educated street typographer Pablo A. Medina gave a lecture at New York’s Type Directors Club. His fonts — Cuba, Vitrina, North Bergen — are as irregular as the signs from which they hail. It’s an irregularity Medina acquiesces to in his artwork, in which he paints new messages using old, found fonts. Handmade designs are more personal, more expressive, more fun.

He’s not the first to notice. Famous artists like Greg Lamarche and Margaret Killigan, as well as underground grafitti artists around the world have all realized the beauty of creating by hand. It’s not perfect — and that exactly is the point.

In general, creating graphics the old-fashioned way is great for those who have not yet mastered software, and it enables more freedom of movement and, by extension, expression.

Even if you are too afraid to let a little bit of yourself out when designing data visualizations, mock up creations by hand. Designing visualizations this way can still be faster and have fewer limitations...

Read further to learn more about how creating images by hand saves time, electricity, and unnecessary labor, while allowing more opportunities for creative exploration and expression.
