Influence Mapping

Influence Mapping | Visual Arts | Scoop.it

Fox-Orian has created a easy to manipulate meme to portray your inspiration and influences. An example can be found here: http://th01.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2013/128/f/9/fox_orian_s_influence_map__2013__by_fox_orian-d2vx8bm.jpg

Eion_D's insight:

Building on the concepts and artistic movements we've looked at throughout the year, now the focus will shift towards social commentary; the how and why artists chose to react to social, political and historic contexts. How does this affect me? I hear you wailing at the screen. Let me tell you little rabbit.

Influence mapping is a cool tool that you can use to summerise your inspiration for any topic. For us, here and now, I want you to think about the ways you could best use this tool to create a solid foundation to explore your ideas, imagery and reflections on your chosen topic. Consider focusing on the impacts of social or political change, satire or irony, revolution or shock as relating to one of the chosen artists.

Influence mapping is a simple, but valuable visual tool to keep you on track during assessment, refresh you when you're feeling disconnected, or to just remind you that there was a point to the project you were working on. Use it to your hearts content. Enjoy.

Some key homework questions for you to focus on:

What is the difference between Impressionist, and Post Impressionist art, and how are these art pieces different to anything before their time?

What or whom most influenced the Impressionist movement and why have you chosen your answer?

Banksy - Wikipedia

Banksy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Banksy's work was made up of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. According to author and graphic designer Tristan Manco and the book Home Sweet Home, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England.

Eion_D's insight:

Remember how we're looking at the 'why' artists might express their reactions to social or political situations with ironic, shocking or satirical pieces? Good. This is a wiki link (I know) to an artist called Banksy. You probably know of his work, and maybe a bit of his story. Have a read of the wiki article, and then check out some of the links via the 'references' section. Why? I hear you ask. Because I told you to. No, wait. There's another reason.

Banksy's work is an excellent contemporary example of a range of artistic concepts and techniques. His works offer us a grounding for exploring authentic criticism of art, literature, and culture because of nature of his pieces. Your challenge after having immersed yourself in the works of Banksy, the public's disdain or love of him, and critics 'observations' about the artist, is to:

Discuss as a group (below, in the comments section) why the use of appropriation in his works creates such poignant symbolism for the wider public.

Using appropriation and symbolism how could you, as an individual, create a work to change, question or challenge a current issue in our school (body image, cyber-bullying, environmental preservation --- 100 words maximum, bullet points are acceptable)?
