What is your vQuotient : Ran Hinrichs in Avaylive VW

What is your vQuotient - your virtual immersion quotient.

One of the weekly in-world meetings of the Train for Success Group ... in either Second Life or one of the other virtual worlds.
http://www.facebook.com/TrainForSuccess
This meeting, 28 February 2012, was held in the web-based virtual world Avaylive https://avayalive.com/ .. specific location at http://persephone.avayalive.com/

"Technology is converging quickly - the web, the mobile web, the 3D web, the 4D web. Planning a strategy to integrate these technologies to have a seamless experience is vital to having a complete communication and training plan. What are the implications of big glass surfaces? What happens when we have unlimited bandwidth? How will true immersion affect us as digital residents? What is avatar psychology?
This talk sets up the idea of a vQuotient - your virtual immersion quotient. Which technology is asks? Which aspects of virtual worlds, serious games and sensor based learning will impact your performance? Let's see how you're getting ready for full immersion."

Shamblesguru's insight:

Ran Hinrichs is the CEO of 2b3d, a multi-award winning Internet media company, focused on immersive technology solutions for the enterprise, government agencies and educational institutions.
Randy's experience spans two decades in the high tech industry, serving in strategic technology positions while at Microsoft Research to advance eLearning, ePublishing and eScience.

I'd planned to only record a few minutes of this presentation to illustrate what the AvayaLive virtual world platform looked like ... but the content was so interesting I wished I'd recorded the whole thing rather than just the last 40 minutes.

Philadelphia — 28-30 January 2011

http://educon23.org
hashtag #educon

This was a real life conference attended by over 300 educators in the USA ... the online aspect is that all of the sessions (conversations) were video streamed. The point to note is the extent of the video streaming ... for each time slot there were 15 simultaneous 'conversations' with each one being streamed individually. This gave those attending online the opportunity to move around between sessions to 'pick and mix'.

Recording an [Adobe Connect] Webinar on an iPad at #IHTOC60

On 24th and 25th May 2013 I attended some of the session in an online conference [for English teachers] #IHTOC60 that used the "Adobe Connect" platform. http...
Shamblesguru's insight:

Using the iPad means you miss out on some of the functionality of this platform ... e.g. videos will not play ... because, I suspect, restrictions of being an iOS device.

But it did allow me to watch/listen/view slides while in the garden on wifi ... and participate using live chat.

I screencast part of one of the sessions in order to show how to do it .. using only the iPad itself..
AFAIK there is only one App that will allow you to screencast anything on the iPad .. even when moving from App to App (leave a comment if you know of others)
Display Recorder [Display Rec.] $7
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/display-recorder-hd/id594415065?mt=8
Records directly to high quality H264 mp4
Display Recorder uses little resources, you're not limited in the video length, and it is generally stable. The app also allows you to export your videos directly to YouTube ... although I found it easier to export to Photo Library and then send to YouTube.

The video above is the final result.
One mistake ass forgetting the external microphone was still active and so you can also hear the birds in the garden ... :-)

Controversy ... this App has had an unusual history ... it slipped into the Apps store initially by mistake as apparently Apple did (does?) not allow this type of functionality ... i.e. live screencasting of everything on the iPad.
It was removed from the store by Apple after a couple of weeks ... it seems it is now [May 2013] back in the store but I notice that the reviews are not very positive.
The version I have [original] is working fine and does everything it says ... as you can see in the video above ... but the reviews say it does not ... you decide which to go with.

Programme at http://t.co/uvUrjwvnfx

Sixty Speakers. Sixty Ideas. Sixty Years
"The format of this conference will be a little different as we have Sixty Speakers presenting Sixty Ideas in 10 minute slots throughout the two days. This makes it really easy for you to dip in and out of sessions between classes and we're confident there will be something to interest everyone."

IH = International House World OrganisationRecordings at http://ihtoc60.blogspot.co.uk/
There will be a YouTube channel later so recordings can be embedded
Twitter live hashtag stream at http://tweetchat.com/room/IHTOC60

If you have anything to do with English Language teaching then I'd highly recommend this conference .. or at least cherry picking from the recordings.
I understand that IH run two conferences a year ... so keep an eye on their websites or follow the Twitter account https://twitter.com/Shaunwilden

'Team Space' from Sococo

"Team Space" is an online environment to collaborate, communicate and to share ... a concept and build from the company "Sococo".

"Sococo is a spatial user interface-based online communications company"(I love that term ... 'spatial user interface').  I first learnt about this platform on a virtual fieldtrip when attending the VWBPE conference in Second Life in March 2011 ... where we experienced alternative virtual environments ... and I must admit that it does have a uniqueness that is more than a little fascinating.

The platform viewer was a very small file that downloaded and played very quickly, it worked very well with my 'not so good' internet connection' and the learning curve was painless. It supports voice, text chat and provides an interface to many cloud-based apps .. through a built-in browser. I talked with some of the Sococo gang about the project and although the initial concept looks like 'enterprise/commercial companies' focused I can well see that it could be useful in teaching and learning ... and Sococo appeared very open to supporting other user groups, including educators.

Shamblesguru's insight:

I think I need to apologise to the Sococo gang as in the screencast I did refer to the platform itself as 'Sococo' when in fact that is the company name ... and the platform name is "Team Space" ... sorry guys. Feel free to set me straight in the comments below ;-)  (head hung low)

BarCamps (video streamed)

BarCamp ... is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.
It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event.

Basically participants just turn up ... volunteer sessions ... others sign up to show what interests them ... and then a programme is constructed.

If is not generally an online event ... but there are times when sessions may well be streamed live .. depending on the organisers, venue and connectivity ... and if there is a laptop :-)

DEN SCIcon (Science) Live + Webinar + Video Streaming

Discovery Educators Network SCIcon SCIcon11

DEN SCIcon is an online (Science) conference (with a twist) focused on providing participants with some of the most effective strategies for transforming their science classes through the meaningful and effective integration of digital media content.

The one day conference programme and details at http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/scicon-2011/

Shamblesguru's insight:

The process for this conference is a 'blended' approach and primarily USA focussed ...  international visitors were able to participate .. some areas of the DEN website are subscription only.

The blended ingredients included ... real world groups coming together (face2face) to work together and also  view (& contribute to) the online presentations.

The online presentations used two platforms:  the webinar platform WebEx (see screencast) and video streaming using Livestream http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/live/
