Versu Gets A Second Life » Ciaran Laval

Versu Gets A Second Life » Ciaran Laval | Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality & Role Play | Scoop.it

Oh come on, someone was always going to use that headline!....

Talla Adam's insight:

Personally, I'm really glad Emily Short was able to get a deal from the Lab. It makes so much sense to give Versu another chance and not just leave it on the shelf to be forgotten. So much work had already gone into the product it was a shock to everyone that enjoys text adventures and interactive fiction when the new CEO at Linden Lab decided it wasn't a "compelling new experience" as he described the other products they wanted to concentrate on when making his decision.

In one sense I have to agree with Ebbe in that there was no way to integrate Versu into Second Life which would have been a fantastic tool for adding a story telling form of AI to animated bot's but, then again, SL doesn't have the advanced NPC functions that Opensim has so I guess there was no easy way to do it. So, while I'm glad for the new Little Story People team it would have been so much better in my view had the Lab kept Versu and got to grips with developing proper NPC's and Interactive Fiction tools for the many creative talent's in Second Life to work with.

Working in Opensim with NPC's and the advanced OSSL functions we are beginning to achieve things that suit interactive fiction story telling where the NPC characters can actually engage in conversation, respond with gestures and animations, and show like and dislike for each other, and even you the player. This demonstrates just how Versu might have worked in Second Life. In my view the Lab too often misses its best opportunities to improve their virtual world product in terms of a "compelling experience" and that is another reason I, personally, don't limit myself to Second Life alone any more.

Opensim Virtual – Community – Google+ | Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality & Role Play | Scoop.it

Maria Korolov (Hypergrid Business) reported, "Opensim Virtual has rapidly become the go-to place for discussions about OpenSim, with 760 members. Lots of discussions going on here. People post links to useful articles, share content, post event announcements and special offers, and ask for advice. It’s a friendly, open and welcoming community."

Talla Adam's insight:

Apart from curating this Scoop.IT! news site I also moderate the successful Opensim Virtual community at Google plus in support of, and to promote, a free and open Metaverse of connected Hypergated worlds.

Everyone is welcome to visit and find out more about the free Metaverse.

1 Night Stand: Do You Want to Date My Avatar

1 Night Stand: Do You Want to Date My Avatar | Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality & Role Play | Scoop.it

One of the hardest parts about being a writer is creating just the right world. The environment in which we build for our creations to inhabit and our readers to come for a visit is just as much a character as the hero and heroine. Writers strive to make the setting just perfect. When I was writing my 1Night Stand books, Betting on a God, capturing the feel, smell, and sounds of the Mount Olympus Casino was a must. To help with this task a few fellow writers and I have started a little club of sorts. The Metaverse Authors.

Talla Adam's insight:

Nara Malone and fellow authors at the Greyville Writer's Colony have  discussed having a hub in Second Life to share info about Opensim. The Greyville Writer's Colony finally decided to put one together. One of the newer Greyville members, Author Courtney Sheets, watches over the SL HUB and explains in this article how authors can use our SL dreamspace and Nara's Nook grid in Opensim to inspire their creativity.

Picture Book

Picture Book | Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality & Role Play | Scoop.it

Picture Book is a fantastical world that expands like the universe everyday. There are obstacles, good folks and not so nice shadow players to meet along the path. Any story Ruby cares about includes conflict. Picture Book is a hero journey and explorers are given the opportunity to write their own journey stories while they visit.

Ann Dickerson is the builder of Picture Book in Kitely Grid which is a story telling world. Ann's avatar (typist) is called Ruby O'Degree which she describes as a fictive author and storybuilder in the tradition of characters developed for telling stories such as Sherlock Holmes, Marco Polo, and Cynthia Rawlings.

Talla Adam's insight:

I visited Picture Book and I must say I loved it but it is still a work in progress. Well worth seeing though and another example of the way in which authors, story tellers and adventure creators are turning to the low cost Opensim worlds to express their undoubted talents in the arts.

Book Island isn’t new to Second Life, it has been around since 2007 and claims to be the oldest dedicated literary sim in Second Life. They’ve recently welcomed back a renter by the name of V.L. Dreyer who is the author of The Survivors series of books...

Talla Adam's insight:

Ciaran Laval also wrote: "The thing that strikes me here is that storytelling is an extremely portable medium. This explains why people can take their stories to different virtual worlds but that portability is also one of the reasons why storytellers are not happy with Linden Lab’s terms of service and why some of them choose to only perform their stories in voice in Second Life these days."

An immersive 360° Motion Novel for the Oculus Rift and VR devices.

Talla Adam's insight:

I like this story and I hope Clyde DeSouza does well developing it as an Interactive comic in virtual reality. I covered it on my blog @ http://metaverse-traveller.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/walking-with-avatars-in-virtual-reality.html back last year because I felt Opensim could serve as a studio for Machinima works and MAYA would make a great Interactive video. So, yes, I would like to see an Opensim venue and avatars used in the making because OS can support Oculus Rift and, well, Opensim is the VW platform we support here not Unity3D which Clyde has chosen for his rendering engine. However, I do think the Indiegogo  funding campaign is worth supporting.

We will now be measuring land in square kilometers - Hypergrid Business | Virtual Worlds, Virtual Reality & Role Play | Scoop.it

Justin Clark-Casey’s monthly Opensim development update reminded me that OpenSim now has a new command for grid owners — “show grid size.” The command counts up all the land area on a grid, including the land of variable-sized regions, and gives the answer in terms of square kilometers. And after a discussion in the comments of this month's stats article , I’ve decided to begin the transition away from counting land by regions, to counting land in kilometers.

Using Virtual Worlds to illustrate stories

CM Elias's insight:

The illustrations on this e-book were all created using snapshots taken in Second Life, and free editing tools available online.

If you're planning to use snapshots taken in SL, don't forget to read Linden Lab TOS (http://lindenlab.com/tos) and also Linden Lab Official Snapshot and machinima policy (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Snapshot_and_machinima_policy)

Other virtual worlds have their own TOS and snapshot policies.

You can also use SoaS - sim on a stick (http://simonastick.com/) to create your own/private/offline virtual world. In that case, you'll decide the TOS of the snapshots ;)

Historical practice or intent is meaningless if this would ever come to a lawsuit. They are basically saying 'we know our contract sounds exploitative, but you trust us right?'." and finally they confirm, "So we will not allow the use of our images in Second Life, but we’ll keep an eye on things to see how it develops."
