Today, Hamlet Au wrote a column suggesting that the OpenSim user base is shrinking — and used Hypergrid Business numbers to support his position. The short answer to his question is: No, OpenSim usage is not falling, and the numbers do not support this. In fact, it is growing quite well. The reason being — the numbers Au is citing aren’t the full numbers, not even for the top 40 largest grids. In particular, InWorldz has only released its active user numbers once, last month, when it was at 4,500 active users. And New World Grid, one of the largest grids, stopped reporting active user numbers this fall. Assuming that both have been growing steadily, in line with the growth on other grids — and in line with their region growth — that would show a very different picture.

One of the common complaints enterprises have about OpenSim is that if they set up a private grid, they’ll have to create all the content from scratch. Employees will have to create their own hair, fashionistas will have to make their own shoes, teachers will have to create their own blackboards, and presenters will have to build their own PowerPoint projectors. That was, in fact, the case a couple of years ago, when OpenSim was still new. But times have changed. Today, schools and companies can transfer content from Second Life, buy it online, or go shopping on other grids and bring stuff back to their own grid via hypergrid teleport.

OpenSim users overwhelmingly said that they would “absolutely” recommend the platform to others. Out of 114 people who responded to our survey this week and answered this question, 84 percent said they would “absolutely recommend” it, with only 1 percent saying they would “absolutely not recommend” the platform. Of the rest, 3 percent said they would hesitate to recommend it, 3 percent said they don’t know, 3 percent said they would only recommend InWorldz, 3 percent said they would only recommend it to experienced users, and 2 percent said they would recommend that people wait for the technology to improve. “If you are aware OpenSim is alpha software, I recommend it,” wrote in one OpenSim user.
